  2. Replacement is called for, obviously. A devious crack like that will continue to propagate, becoming larger, less subtle and less able to satisfactorily perform its original function. Repairs that simply close the fissure, while tempting, are not practical in this case. Bob

  6. Saw this magazine cover and thought it fit right in. As noted above, "Elon Musk is having a much higher level of success with kerosene-fueled rockets than he is with battery powered Tesla automobiles despite the fact that building cars isn't exactly rocket science." The problems, of course, are mainly to do with the fact that he's trying to build them without them needing fossil fuel aboard. Other than that his cars aren't trying to do any more than other automobiles already do quite easily, just as well and for a lower price. John
  7. For me, attempting to use the automation would probably be a mistake. My plan would be, a) leave AP engaged for the moment, b) ask the cabin for a second set of eyes/hands in the other seat to assist c) set the transponder to 7700, d) get someone on a radio - on 121.5 if necessary, e) declare emergency and request vectors to a survivable destination airport, f) disengage AP and hand fly per vectors. I think I could fly a heading, maintain an altitude, maintain a directed airspeed, make a gentle descent and/or easy turns, get the gear and flaps out when needed - not to ATP criteria

Speaking for myself, with a lot of simulator experience and a low-time Private Pilot ticket, I think I'd stand a fairly good chance in reasonably decent WX, even from altitude. Hard IMC conditions, heavy turbulence, strong crosswinds, etc. at the destination would seriously hamper my chances, I think, probably to the point of being vanishingly small.
  9. Interesting - they put a General Atomics SkyGuardian drone into the North Atlantic Tracks system to get it across to the Fairford show. Yep - it flew itself there rather than being ferried in the belly of a transport. This is a turboprop powered, advanced version of the MQ-9 Reaper/Predator B series. It's very similar to the F-15/F-16 high/low mix of a few decades ago except that the production of F-22s was stopped early with too few built.   12. Clicking "Add-ons" and "FSUIPC" isn't supposed to make anything happen. The fact that you have an "Add-ons" meu bar with "FSUIPC" in it means FSUIPC is installed and running. When FSUIPC is installed correctly, it starts when FS starts and is ready to facilitate communications between FS and other related programs such as Flying School. I don't have Flying School and don't know how you start it and kick it off, but clicking on Add-ons -> FSUIPC is most certainly not the way to get Flying School going.   14. I just did a slow troll through the 27-1/2 pages (10 per page) of new files in the Flightsim.com file library and would like to share a few impressions and thoughts. I think their "New Files" button brings up everything uploaded in the last 30 days - 257 new entries in this case.   18. I struggle with the Garmin in FSX too, but have learned a few useful things that I can use it for without a lot of fumbling around. In general, it's pretty much a mystery to me. As a side note related to the GPS, the Approaches list that I include in the airport diagrams is a listing of those approaches that are built into the FSX/Garmin GPS. If you see an approach listed on one of my charts, you can expect that approach to also be available in the GPS, many with multiple transitions (which I do not list). John
  19. It seems I'm reading and commenting on old threads these days. I point out that, 3-1/2 years later there is still no TTIP and there isn't likely to be one anytime soon. The sky was not falling after all. I'm no expert on the details of TTIP, but suspect that the Brexit referendum result and the election of Donald Trump pretty much knocked the wheels of that particular government initiative. John

On the Garmin GPS 500 in FSX - probably the same in P3D NRST button - > PUSH CRSR button (center of knob - top line airport ICAO will blink) -> Outer Knob Right Arrow (blinking ICAO will move down one airport - move to desired airport) -> ENT button -> Inner Knob Right Arrow to 3rd page. Will have a list of the airport frequencies, including the ILS. Obviously you have to be near enough to your destination airport for it to be listed in the top nine. John

Interesting to read back through some of these old threads four years later and see that the sky really was not falling after all. 64-bit P3D and Win10 have made all this sound kind of humorous, though no doubt early 32-bit P3D with few/no add-ons and the Win 8/8.1 debacle did cause a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth at the time. Given a little patience and riding out the bumps in the road, most things get better over time. John
  22. Map view… zoom in a few clicks until you see runways, click on any runway; either airport or ILS text info will display (depending on zoom level and exactly where you click). Either will do as the ILS frequencies are in the runway table of the airport text. …or... Allard's airport diagrams. John EDIT: Just discovered that, in the Map View, just mousing over the ILS feather will pop up an info box that includes the frequency. You must have the ILS feathers turned on in the top button bar of the map view. JDA
