Yes folks, As John and I have both witnessed, the Middle East is not to be taken lightly. When you venture there, you follow the rules, you stay safe, and you don't try to be clever. Most importantly , never piss off the locals, they can be your best friends, but your worst enemies. They know the land, you don't. People have died of thirst less than half a mile from a source of water. Turn left at the wrong sand dune and you could be lost. disrespect their customs........and you could be dead! One of our officer cadets made the mistake of standing on the Saudi courtesy flag one evening as he

I spent several years out in the region when I worked for BP. the hottest place we ever dropped anchor was Khassab Bay, just inside the Straits of Hormuz, we were there for 2 weeks discharging 27,000 tons of cargo into small coastal tankers and even drum carrying Dhows that serviced the local fishing communities. The place is an extinct volcano with one side blown out, the heat hits the sides of the old crater and then bounces straight into the ship! after the first week our Air Con motor failed and parts for it had to be flown out to Dubai which were then brought up by a supply launch, that m

That's what I've been reading as well, looks like the flight crew screwed up big time on this occasion. I daresay once the flight recorders are examined all will become clear. Worrying to see how quickly that aircraft burnt to the ground like that though. I wonder how one of the new "plastic planes, B787, A350 etc" would fare in a similar situation.

I agree, they look like being tough old birds, that one that landed at Heathrow without engines was largely intact as well, the main damage being the wheels and engines ripped off and the inner wings trashed.

Happening right now, it looks like there were no fatalities but the aircraft is destroyed. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3721366/Fire-Dubai-International-Airport-Emirates-Airline-passenger-jet-crash-lands.html

Crash detection was on but if you skim the surface you can get away with it. I've seen it done in real life as well. There's a South African display team using Harvards that does it.

Recently added JFs Chipmunk to the hangar (special offer in the July sales,) Decided to take one of them down to New Zealand's South Island for a tour around the Southern Alps and fjords. Lovely old aircraft , delightful to fly and a perfect mount for what I had in mind. Thanks for viewing

Great photos, I didn't know anyone was still flying Magisters!

One bit of good news, I've managed to download all the Videos that were on FB so at least I have those again. The rest of the pics I'll try and retrieve at a later date.I have the important ones that had pics of family and friends, some of whom have now passed away. At least that's one less thing to fret about.

Hi folks, been away for a few days. My computer decided to throw a wobbly and during a transfer of files managed to "lose" a whole folder of photos. All it had to do was transfer some picture files from one external drive to another, but for some reason, one of the most important ones got lost in the process. It was a file containing about 10 years of holiday snaps plus things from various airshows and days out. My PC techie had the machine and both external drives for several days and he threw everything at them but without success. I've managed to salvage about 90% of the photos from my Face

Gemini Cargo, now regret taking on former models as pilots, the size of their make-up bags caused problems! -

Capt to loadmaster, I expressly told you NOT to go for the1/2lb burger! Now look what's happened! -
Looks good, certainly better rendering than the old UKMil one, however if it has serious faults then I'll wait for a while before getting it.

Congratulations to all the team behind the Solar Impulse round the world flight. A remarkable achievement and proof beyond all doubt that it could be done. The approach at night with all her lights on gave the aircraft a somewhat "other worldly "appearance but she is beautiful aircraft. I hope the lessons learned from the flight will eventually find their way into commercial and general aviation. The military applications are also very obvious, an aircraft with no heat signature being the most obvious! Well done guys.

Excellent work, I too love flying gliders, silent flight is a really peaceful pastime. (It also stops Marie yelling at me to turn the aircraft noise down when she's watching TV! )
