J G 927 Posted July 6, 2014 Report Share Posted July 6, 2014 Glass bottomed tankard. Pewter tankards often had glass bottoms in the UK. The reason behind this was that the press would slip a shilling into a tankard of ale. If you then drank from that tankard you were deemed to have "taken the kings shilling" and were in the Navy or Army. The glass bottom allowed you to see the shilling before you drank from it.
