A321 breaks up over Egypt, no survivors.

"Terrorists fleeing the scene of retaliation prior to the event" would look very suspiciously like they had been "tipped off" through official channels...however, "Saving Civilian Lives by dropping Warnings" (Do armies drop leaflets warning civilians to beware of dropping bombs...but..."sshhhhhh...don'tt tell the terrorists") looks like "being nice"(...if the looker is a complete and utter moron) and allows one's destabilization operation forces get out of town before the local Civilians get bombed...yet again. But, they were warned this time...so if any get Collaterally Damaged...well, it's their own fault now isn't it??? :(

Not Pittsburg I think, but St Petersburg, that is in Russia last time I looked.

The PPRUNE thread has been shut down (suspended pending new developments - they seem to be saying it will be re-opened when there's something new) but not deleted.  It happened a couple of days ago.

The French sent 12 aircraft, 10 of them fighter types. Twelve!  They dropped a total of 20 bombs.  Hardly a massive response, except perhaps in comparison to what had been done up to that point.  So f

At least...Hollande [has] the balls to do something.

Even a dyed-in-the-wool Socialist like him can smell the coffee when the entire pot of boiling liquid is poured into his lap. He's got a great grasp of the obvious when it can no longer be denied.

Unfortunately, it will take another 9/11 type event in the US to spur Obama to do anything meaningful.

U.S. F-15 fighters dropped leaflets, prior to bombing ISIS trucks telling people to leave so they would not kill anyone. WTF?

The whole basis of terrorist action is that they hide in plain sight.  Warn the people and you are warning the terrorist.

It gives them time to scram, or to buss in loads of civilians to plan a US outrage.

I hope that Russia integrates into a cohesive front against IS.  I fear that the only long term solution is boots on the ground, there may be no other way.   :(

ISIS has posted a photo of what they say is the bomb that brought down the Russian aircraft...

http://news.yahoo.com/islamic-state-shows-photo-improvised-russian-plane-bomb-151230148.html

What first looked like a corroded bottom of the can now looks to me as if it's been cut out and put back with epoxy. The item in the center is an electric blasting cap - the detonator. On the right is something wrapped in electrical tape, with two leads only. Two LEDs are visible, one red, one green. It's likely a battery and a switch of some kind, possibly barometric, possibly a timer - it's too small to be a cell phone and probably too small to be any other kind of remote command-detonated device. If you look carefully at the bottom center of the can, there's a hole big enough to insert the blasting cap into and a white substance showing through it. In all likelihood, the can was opened and drained through that - the pull-tab top is probably un-opened and intact.

I saw one write-up that says the Russians believe there was about a pound of TNT. If it fit in a 12 oz. drink can, it would be less than that, more like a half-pound, but plenty to get the job done depending on where it was placed. This particular aircraft had an auxiliary long-range tank installed in the aft cargo bay, which seems to be near the center of the event.

It's impossible to tell if this is image is authentic but it's plausible. If the battery is connected to the cap and the switch between them is closed, it's going to go BOOM. Something like this should be visible in baggage on an X-Ray if monitored by someone reasonably alert and competent. Wires and batteries are a red flag and the blasting cap is unmistakable. It may be that the device was introduced directly into the AC by an ISIS sympathizer who was an airport worker, in which case it would not have been X-Rayed. If in checked baggage, it should have been screened.

Ramp workers, mechanics, baggage handlers, etc, with airside access are of concern. That's going to be a hard one to guard against.

Egyptian authorities insist it's too soon to conclude that this was a bomb but I suspect it will always be too soon for them to reach that conclusion. The Russians are certain.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, there's a rocker switch in the base of the object on the right.

Alan, If you think Russia is attacking ISIS for any ideological reasons think again. Putin, former KGB man, is propping up Assad because he wants to become a major power player in the middle East and this is a good way to get a foothold, in addition to their deals with Iran. They would like nothing better than to frustrate and humiliate the U.S. He may be out to get ISIS now, but only sofar as to whatever suits his long term plans. If he can strike them and make everyone else look incompetent, the better for him

I didn't say they were doing it for idealocial reasons, I just said they were doing what they said they'd do, rather than Cameron who is just pissing about and trying to decide if he has a backbone!

https://news.yahoo.com/video/two-suspects-being-held-russian-102928862.html

I'm posting the full text of the article below because the link seems to be a little funky...

"Two Suspects Being Held In Russian Plane Crash

Egyptian authorities have detained two employees of Sharm al-Sheikh airport for questioning in connection with the downing of a Russian jet on Oct. 31 that killed all 224 people on board. A Egyptian security official said "Seventeen people are being held, two of them are suspected of helping whoever planted the bomb on the plane at Sharm al-Sheikh airport." CCTV footage showed a baggage handler carrying a suitcase from an airport building to another man, who was loading luggage onto the doomed airliner from beneath the plane on the runway."

I suspect being held in an Egyptian jail is not a great way to get your fun-meter pegged high.  After a week of that they'll probably confess to anything up to and including sinking the Titanic.

Not to say they're innocent - or guilty - anything is possible, I guess.

Good news. If they helped I hope they get what's coming to them. :yesa:

I'd add/clarify: If they "Knowingly" helped... (pretty sure that's what you meant Brett... :) )

As a courier I'd hate to think that simply delivering a bag or parcel alone deserves time in an Egyptian prison :(

But ya, if anyone knowingly helped, I hope they get far more punishment than they deserve...like 200 times more, or whatever the passenger/crew count was.

According to a Swedish newspaper the preliminary report from Egyptian authorities there was no evidence supporting an act of terrorism!

No mention as to what else would have caused it though...

Mechanic suspected of planting bomb in Russian passenger jet for ISIS

Not exactly a smoking gun and, as usual, Egypt is stonewalling, but there may be something to this.  It's plausible, at least
