Tutorial: Adding Custom AI Traffic

Recommended Posts

This tutorial will guide you through the stages of adding your own custom AI traffic, using the many freeware items and utilities available. It will help those who may be having trouble installing a pre-made traffic addon such as ProjectAI or World of AI and also for those who wish to take AI traffic one step further and add airlines that may not be included in such addons. It will also help you get the best out of your Flight Simulator AI by adding the highest quality and up-to-date traffic available.

In this tutorial, we will be adding Virgin Atlantic to the Traffic Database.

Part A: Downloading and Sorting the Flightplans

1. The first thing I would recommend all users to do is to make a folder called "My Traffic" (or whatever you wish) to place all the files related to the airline you are planning to install. I would also recommend making a seperate folder for each airline:

fsscr0.jpg

2. Now we need to find the flightplans for our AI airline. We are going to use avsim (http://www.avsim.com) to find all the needed freeware items for this tutorial, although when you continue after this tutorial, you may wish to use other sources. So, let's do a search for 'Virgin Atlantic' under 'Flight Simulator 2004 AI Flight plans":

fsscr000.jpg

3. Look through the results and find the one which you think is the most suitable (and reliable) looking download (preferably a relative up-to-date one too!) For this tutorial, let's use the EvAi ones:

fsscr001.jpg

4. After the download, notice the Airport, Aircraft and Flightplans files. They are highlighted in the below image:

fsscr002.jpg

5. These files are the heart of the Virgin Atlantic AI airline. Copy them into your "My Traffic/Virgin Atlantic" Folder:

fsscr003.jpg

6. If you open the Aircraft and Flightplan text files, you will notice that each aircraft has a number (AC#). This is how the system recognises the different aircraft types.

fsscr004.jpg

fsscr006.jpg

Part B: Downloading and Sorting the Aircraft

1. Now that we have the flightplans sorted, we need to assign some aircraft to them. So, let's start with the first one (AC#1) The Virgin A343. We now need to do another search on avsim for this aircraft. Search for 'Virgin Atlantic' again but this time under the 'Flight Simulator 2004 - AI Aircraft' option:

fsscr007.jpg

2. After looking through the results, we come across this:

fsscr008.jpg

3. Now, some of you may have noticed that this is only the Virgin Atlantic Textures for 'The Fruit-Stand A340-300'. So we also need to download the base package:

fsscr009.jpg

fsscr010.jpg

fsscr011.jpg

4. Now you will have the two zip files. One for textures and one for the base package. Extract the Base package (TFS_A340-300) to your main Flight Simulator 2004/Aircraft folder:

fsscr012.png

5. Then copy the texture file from the other zip file into the TFS_A340-300 folder:

fsscr014.jpg

6. Now that we've added a texture folder, we also need to add the 'fltsim' entry to go with it. So, open the [fltsim.X]_VIR and copy the contence into the aircraft.CFG of the TFS_A340-300. Make sure that you open the .cfg file with notepad!

fsscr015.png

fsscr017.png

7. IMPORTANT: Now that you have copied the fltsim entry into the aircraft.cfg, you also need to add the appropriate ending (the .X bit.) This MUST go in the correct order, i.e adding 1 each time. So the first is .0 then .1 then .2 and so on:

fsscr018.jpg

8. Now that you have the aircraft.cfg sorted, copy the 'title=' entry from the Virgin A340 into the original Aircraft text document back in My Traffic/Virgin Atlantic folder. Make sure that you overwrite the bit between the two "".

fsscr019.png

fsscr021.jpg

And that's it for AC#1. I know it seems like a long process here, but once you get used to it and have done it a couple of times, each aircraft will be done in a matter of seconds. Now for this next bit, you will have to use a bit of initiative to fill in the remaining four aircraft. So once you are finished, you should have a complete list of title entries, for the appropriate aircraft.

Part C: Compiling the Traffic

1. Now that you have your completed list of title entries for the aircraft...

fsscr022.jpg

2. ...Save the aircraft text file. Now for this next bit I recommend that you download the World of AI installer from http://www.world-of-ai.com. Once you have downloaded it, extract all the files to a folder of your choice. Then copy the three files from the My Traffic/Virgin Atlantic folder into the World of AI folder:

fsscr023.jpg

3. Then open up the 'TTools' application and click on the three files on the left hand side (which are your Virgin Atlantic files). They should appear highlighted. Then click on the compile button and Job done! This will then create a .bgl file in the World/Scenery folder of Flight Simulator:

Looks good and I will digest it when I get a chance later today. Thanks for taking the time to put that together. it looks like it was a lot of work. In the meantime, a question....

Is a flightplan in the format shown in your 7th image OK with T2005? It's a different format than those created by using the flight plan editor in the T2005 Traffic Editor.

Thanks guys. :blush

I'm not too sure about your question, John. I certainly wouldn't like to make any assumptions. Maybe someone who uses Traffic 2005 on the forum will be able to help on this one?

Has anyone used the Random Flight Plan Generator? I think it's part of TT Tools. Mine came with Traffic 2005.

It's never worked correctly though I have recently learned how to work around the problems and get a flight

plan file out of it that works correctly in T2005.

You give it a list of airports and a list of AC with the quantity of each type. It produces a flight plan file with

random times and airport pairs using the AC list and the airport list. It takes some manual work to fix the

template file it produces and some more on the finished flight plan file it spits out, but the randomly generated

fields (departure times, airport pairs, AC used for each) are fine and it's not all that difficult to get a working

flight plan from it.

Back in 2005, John, when I used T2005, I also used this 'Random Flight plan' creator as well - but it did nothing but cause problems for me. It always added the flight plans but it never used the correct aircraft. If I added a flightplan with a BA A320 it would fly the correct plan, but use a completely different aircraft, say a Monarch A320. :???:

Also, unless you have the complete list of aircraft types, like in T2005, it is quicker to download the flightplans, and assign the aircraft as in the above tutorial, rather than create your own flightplans, because the only thing that takes the time in the above method is adding the aircraft, not the flightplans. :thum:

Thanks for the tip, though. It is good if you have T2005! :dance2:

George

Hi there Mrbobo,

It could be the AFCAD causing the problem. Could you possibly explain in a bit more detail? Which airport(s) don't you see aircraft landing - do you have any addon scenery for that airport etc.

It could also be the flightplans. If the flightplans you downloaded for the chosen airline aren't very reliable, they could be written incorrectly. If you used the stated flightplans in the tutorial, however, you shouldn't have any problems here!

EDIT: Remember! If the traffic is going wrong and you want to delete it and start over, you can delete the BGL file for that set of flightplans that is located in FS9/Scenery/World/Scenery. The name of the BGL file will be the same as the names of the flightplans/aircraft/airports files.

Kind Regards,

George

Does this AI work properly or are you still have the 'non-landing' problem?

George

I cant figure out when AI traffic should be landing!

I have added about 8 airliners including the Virgin from your example!

I just cant figure out the landing times from the flightplans!

There is a very useful freeware program which allows you to see a simplified view of aircraft AI schedules. I cannot remember the name of it, though. I will check on avsim and edit the post if I find it. Once you've added quite a few airlines, some of the busy airports (provided you have added the airlines that operate there), will be very active with traffic with planes wanting to land every couple of minutes. So if it's just them landing you're woried about, once you have added a bunch of flightplans, there should be a fair bit of action visible.

I would recommend adding a big airline (like British Airways) and check the action at Heathrow, where there will be lots of that airline landing. If it is just a few flightplans you have added, it may be quite rare to see that flightplan landing, but if there are lots and lots - you're guaranteed to see some.

Anyway, I'll edit the post if I see that utility. :thum:

Thanks for trying the guide,

Enjoy your AI,

George

Hi George!

Fianlly got it sorted with help from AIG!

Had the wrong sim= name!

Aircraft are landing more often now aswell!

Thanks for the excellent guide!
