Dovetail Games Flight School New Preview Shots

Recommended Posts

We had some great news today, a preview copy of the upcoming Flight School from Dovetail Games landed on my desk with permission to publish screenshots!

It's like FSX:SE but on steroids and with a new interface, a 1000 x performance boost and no OOMs

Besides the flight school basics there are some missions and free flight. The default aircraft are much better than FSX default but not a patch on the top end aircraft presently available for FSX.

It's still early days and these pictures are purely WIP so the released product may look slightly better/ different

FSX users will be happy that all those memorised shortcuts appear to work with the upcoming release.

It is looking very promising indeed.

So here we are, pictures from a ferry mission to Wick and some awful free flight weather out of Southampton.

Enjoy.

Looks darn good, and considering the price tag I think this will end up on my machine if only to support DTG in going forward..

Are there any support for Saitek panels at this point??

Hi Phil,

All I can say, as I don't have the definitive answer but the folder/file structure is similar to FSX/P3D in that you have a scenery folder and an addon scenery folder.

However, the default scenery has a version of Orbx Global base and Orbx trees and autogen, so it is built around this environment rather than photoscenery.

I wouldn't see this sim as the one for expansion and 3rd party add-ons like FSX/P3D, and I am not in the know about future DLC. Although you can fly anywhere in the world the main purpose of this sim is to teach the basics and some free flying .

I am sure when they release the full Dovetail Games Flight Sim, there will be so much more and it will be the natural successor to Flight School.

Also, I must point out that my preview pictures do contain anomalies and shader issues that are yet to be fixed in the final release but the familiarity of the sim is reassuring.

Cheers,

Joes

Thanks Joe for your helpful reply, maybe with a bit of twiddling I'll get it to accept photoscenery

There's no so long to wait now to find out!

Is the performance really THAT good? What kind of FPS are you getting? Also, what's the CPU/GPU usage like?

Ok, the display set up is basic but that is in line with the simple to use and understand GUI: (let's not forget the target audience)

Screen%20Shot%2005-04-16%20at%2012.05%20

From the sessions above with heavy cloud, this is what the system was reporting 58.7FPS

Screen%20Shot%2005-04-16%20at%2012.06%20

VAS usage 8,479.620K

Screen%20Shot%2005-03-16%20at%2008.12%20

Cheers,

Joe

Have to agree with Joe...this is really aimed at newcomers and is closed to developers.. ORBX have done a great job but thats a given..I have bought to see the step up hopefully from FSX...it was cheap and you have to understand it not for our addons....you can still fly anywhere and do the learning...even if you just use it to freshen up your skills and have a nose around.....I read some articles by some big devs and they think this is a huge thing for flight sim and they have said how they will have stuff in full sim when its out...64bit also will make a difference I have noticed in XP how not having to be concerned with OOMs is a good thing ...admittedly its the whole package, the sim and your rig have to be up to it but flight simming in the future is looking good..I'm in ..as they say...

Interesting though.. it does mean that there could be backward compatibility with FSX/P3D-addons once the full fledge version comes out...

Are there Exe.xml and dll.xml files in place in the usual location as well?

No, I can't find them in AppData or ProgramData, also, there is no modules folder in the root directory so I guess that answers the 3rd party software question. (or does it!)

Looks really good in the pic's, almost P3Dish and that model is actually nicer than some developers stuff. After all the years I have into flight sims I should hope I do not need to learn much about the basics of flight so not sure how much I would need to get this beginning release if it's just for the eye candy. Hopefully the full version will give us the same ability to root around and edit files because this is what made FSX what it is today, a community orientated program and not just for developers. I guess that puts me on the fence for now, yet if they have put a lot of effort into fixing those things that FSX lacks then it just might be worth it.

Been out all day Joe and just seen your pics. What can I say, it looks like it's going to be a hit with its target audience and others as well.

As a pre purchaser, I'm also looking forward to its release.

Great screenshots mate.

Good review, thanks Joe. Based on your shots and comments, it does indeed look good for the Flight Sim future, especially by the end of the year. I note the 8gb of VAS usage, that would not only be a disaster in FSX, it just wouldn't be possible. But in a 64bit system it's only a drop in the ocean.

I downloaded the pre release today. I want to support DTG's efforts and get an idea of performance for myself. Cheers Anton.
