Understanding weather reports

Recommended Posts

I have been reading up on weather reports and have downloaded a really good PDF that explains most things, however I can't find an explanation for the following, any help would be useful please...

FEW120 BKN300.....

does the 120 mean 1200ft or 12000ft

does the 300 mean 3000ft or 30000ft

understand the rest of the reports....

thanks, don't laugh to much at my dumb question....

The number is in hundreds of feet above GROUND level (not MSL). Add two zeros to get the height in feet.

so 120 is 12000 ft, 012 would be 1200 ft, 300 is 30000 ft and so on.

(if you think that sounds about the same as flight levels, that's a good way of remembering)

Perfect answer Tim. :thum:

And we never laugh at any question Wayne, we all had to figure that out at one point.:) Not asking the question and going through life not knowing would be laughable.;)
