I am a bad person indeed, having succumbed to the terrible 'new CPU-itis'...

What kind of experiences does anyone else have of Kaby Lake please?

I'm considering de-lidding it, or just running OC'ed on an all-in-one water cooler.  Has anyone else de-lidded a 7700K?  Does it really need it?  Any opinions as to what memory specs might be a good fit please?

Cheers K

Naughty naughty!

You would probably be the first around here to use a KL processor, the specs look good compared to the 6700K.

I'm still pootling along with my (nearly) four year old 4770K and dragging my heals for a 6 core CPU.

Toms Hardware would probably be the best site to check out the technical aspects. (unless we have a PC specialist on board)

Cheers

Thanks Joe, heard some good things and saw a cracking deal so clicked 'buy'...just wondered if anyone here had any experience with a KL, but if not I'll post my comparisons with my current venerable i5-2500K shortly.

Have seen some people have delidded and reduced temps by up to 30 degrees, but I wonder if it's really necessary even if that's a reachable goal?  I tend to suspect that while a CPU is running under its thermal restriction limit it will be fine (the old 2500K has been running at 70-odd degrees at 4.7GHz for 6 years now without any apparent issues) and the delid process is more for bragging rights than much in the way of actual performance :P

Anyway, with the upcoming new version of P3D it seems a good time to get set with as good performance as possible...not to mention daughter number 2 is due in 2 weeks so the chance of getting an upgrade after that is minimal to non-existant!

Congratulations Kevin! I thought you had been quiet for a while.

Well, keep us up to date with your progress with the new CPU, all  we need now is P3D V4 to be released!

Congrats on the new addition to the family Kevin.:hat: When the kids are old enough to use computers they will be using yours as a planter and laughing at the old one's dad used to use.:D

They already are Brett!

I'm selling this upgrade to myself on the basis that my eldest girl is quite interested in aeroplanes and what better way to allow her to further that ;)  And she gets my old kit to practice with before being allowed into the hallowed sanctuary of my simpit!

  • 1 month later...

Just got round to installing this today.

Lidded, its booting at 5.0Ghz, stable at 4.9, temps low 30's idle, high 70s under stress.

Fired up in the NGX its giving me 54fps in the VC in default location, 41fps in VC in UK2000 EGKK.

lol not quite, but it does need 1.4v to get to 4.9ghz stable :O

I'm not sure whether I'm 100% comfortable with that, but Asus recommend not using more than 1.4v when stress testing, so its 'just' within recommended limits..

I may still delid it later and see if I can get temps down lower towards the 60s, and I may need to invest in a better cooler - or I can just drop to 4.8ghz and live with it.

EDIT: In terms of value for money, initial impressions are that average fps for cpu limited addons like PMDG have increased by about 60% over my previous i5-2500K @ 4.7Ghz, but that other addons like A2A see less of an improvement. (20%) That is with all settings maxed out, so it appears that the 980Ti may be the limiting factor now.

Overall I think it cost me around £700 to do the upgrade and even though I didnt get a diamond chip in the silicon lottery it appears robust enough to handle every situation in P3Dv3 and well placed for v4 (if it ever arrives!)

EDIT2: I didnt do enough research on the mobo though, it only supports x1 USB2.0 connection, which means I can only use a fraction of my case's x5 front mounted USB2.0 ports and card reader :(

My old Z87 board had x3 USB2.0 connectors!  The Asus Maximus Hero supports USB2.1 and 3.1 connectors (evolution and advancement is great!) but leaves me with legacy connections and components I cant use....

nice phil, what parts did you go for?

Most of them can be seen in my signature strip at the bottom of my posts, apart from what you see I got a 500gb SSD and a 4tb SSHD and the EVGA card is the Classified version. The monitor being the single most expensive component.

ah cant see your specs as Im on my phone :)

Looked on the pc..

What speed DDR4 did you go for Phil?  Are you intending to delid your 7700K?  What cooler do you plan to use with it? :)

Cheers K

I chose 3200mhz for the ram, No i am not intending to de lid the CPU and i am using a Corsair H115i cooler.

The system is now built and running at stock speeds currently. My old 3570k CPU was overclocked to a stable 4.2ghz whereas this 7700k is 4.2ghz stock speed so i might over clock it very slightly and see how it goes. My motherboard has a great over clock utility that over clocks by simply turning a dial and thats it so any guess work is removed.

I have finished building the new computer and have it up and running. The motherboard overclock function is very easy to use, simply turn a dial to the overclock you want and press a button and job done, From 4.2 to 4.8ghz in no time.

Excellent Phil, let us know how you are finding performance with the sim when you get it set up?

sounds like two good investments, let us know how it goes.....my 6600k OC to 4.2 and even with my old 970 card I am very happy with my sim so you two should have some great times....

Yes I keep starting the sim to check the frame rates... Im in the happy position that with all sim options maxed, even AS16 running and in the ngx im still putting out 70+ fps.  With TrackIR before I was getting stutters due to the fps being lower than monitor refresh rate, now I've found I have the same stutters because fps is higher than refresh, so i've locked to 60fps.  Some add on a/c are manging 100+ fps everything maxed... Beyond my expectations :) When combined with a decent GPU Kaby Lake is a cery recommendable upgrade!
