Controlling badly behaved AI Traffic

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm having lots of problems controlling my AI Traffic. They just don't behave and don't really act a lot like realistic AI traffic. Starting flights at busy airports results in the whole airport emptying and the AI take part in the usual hustle and bustle while they all rush for the runway. Meanwhile, a huge group of nearby traffic is on approach and instead of seperating out, they all decide to bunch up in one load and 5 have to go around while 1 lands. Since there's so many aircraft landing, the huge queue for the runway (which is nearly as long as the runway) never moves and the aircraft start to disappear because they are so late. Now I am sure that a lot of you have witnessed something close to what I have just described. :wow:

I have tried using a couple of tricks and utilities to stop this from happening. I use FS AI Seperation, which I find is reasonably good at seperating AI traffic on approach (much better than AI smooth). Whenever I make a flight I always leave the aircraft at the gate and do something else for 15 or 20 minutes before requesting clearance, to give the traffic a little bit of time to settle down and get into routine. :whis:

Edit: Another problem I have with some airports (mainly UK2000 scenery) is that the AI land, then turn around and go back to the previous taxiway exit. Also another problem - a lot of the aircraft take ages when they take off. They turn onto the runway and instead of just going the taxi forward very slowly for a bit, then halt for a bit, then go and sometimes it can take 4-5 mins from being cleared for take off to actually lifting off. This obviously results in a big build up of traffic waiting for the runway.

I was wondering if anyone here knew anything else about how AI traffic behave, and if there is any other utilities or tricks you use to help control them.

Get rid of all Touch & Goes. They tie airports in knots. Your trick of ignoring FS for 15 or 20 minutes after starting to let the AI get past the start-up rush is on the right track, but if there are the usual four to six T&Gs in the pattern, it's all for naught.

Whenever I encounter them I pull down the Traffic Browser and delete them immediately, then make a note so I can go back later and make an edit of the flight plan file. I don't delete them in the flight plan, just send them elsewhere, so it turns into a regualar AI flight instead of a T&G.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry I forgot to mention, I don't use any traffic addons (like Traffic 2005/X), I make all my own AI plus using some packages from World of AI. All the GA Aircraft I have never perform Touch & Goes. I used to have that problem when I used Traffic 2005, but like you said, I just sent them elsewhere! :wow:

Thanks again for your reply!

You have a broken AFCAD! Download a new one from Avsim!

is that the AI land, then turn around and go back to the previous taxiway exit.

That kind of sounds like disconnected taxiway links. It's easy to fix in AFCAD. Open the airport in AFCAD and run the Fault Finder utility.

Thanks both for your replies. With regards to the turning taxiway problem. I opened the AFCADs of Heathrow and Gatwick Xtreme (which both have this problem) and the fault finder found that the runways are riddled with this problem:

I also found a related article over at UK2000 scenery forums:

You would think an outfit like UK2000 could get it right on the first try. One wonders if they left it that way for a reason - maybe to funnel the ground traffic to a common path? It sounds weird, but ground traffic at busy airports is easily gridlocked. I'd recommend saving a virgin copy of the AFCAD and do your tweaking with a copy.
