I saw a lot of these during my service too, Brett.  Most were on approach to Norfolk Naval Station, coming over the piers, or approaching USS America while the destroyer I was on was plane-guarding for them.  Our usual position was about a mile directly behind them.  We never had to fish anyone out of the drink while I was there.

Matt,

 

I'll beg to differ on both the designer and aircraft name.

 

I think you will find the designer was Ottone Baggio and the aircraft is the Baggio Il Gallo. Gallo being Italian for rooster, and the aircraft does the regular airshow circuit in Italy.
