X-Plane free Android app.

Recommended Posts

There is a free X-Plane app (demo) available from the Google App Shop (78.72 MBytes).

Not sure if this is a cut-down version of X-Plane 10, but the scenery graphics are very good - reminiscent of the expensive military simulator graphics of the 1990's.

Here is a photo (still checking out Android screen-capture apps) of the app on a Nexus 7 tablet - does not do the real image quality justice.

The motion/attitude sensors in the tablet give very fluid control of the aircraft when holding the tablet with both hands similar to holding an aircraft control yoke.

It's X-Plane 9, and is free due to "patent trolling" over the means of licencing. Have it installed on a cheap 7" unbranded tablet, and is acceptable for short-term use. From the Play store :

X-Plane is the most flexible and realistic flight simulator on the market for desktop and mobile devices. Using blade element theory for the most powerful and accurate flight model available for personal computers, and earning FAA certification for logging of flight time for pilots, X-Plane is the Gold Standard for accurate flight simulation, offering realism that is unmatched by any other simulator.

This version includes:

- 6 scenery regions included (15 more available for purchase)

- 10 different aircraft of varying types (43 more available for purchase)

- Fly Dawn, Day, Dusk, Night

- Fly in VFR/IFR conditions from clear skies to overcast.

- You control the weather!

- Simulated system failures!

- Bird Strikes!

- Multiplayer over WiFi!

- Installs right to your SD card (Froyo/2.2 support required)

Thanks for the information. Tried an earlier version of X-Plane years ago but rarely used it.

After using the Android app which you say is a demo' of X-Plane 9, X-Plane 10 looks interesting and may be worth a try - of course having spent a lot of time and money on FS2004 & FSX/Acceleration this might turn out to be an expensive shift of direction!

Cheers,

Ray.

Just to confirm - it is NOT a demo. It is a full app, previously charged for but due to patent trolling on the licencing system the basic app is now free with some areas and planes, with more of each avaialble for (paid) download. A bit like MS Flight, if you will.

Cheers
