28th December 1985, saw the first flight of the Fokker 50, as a replacement for the Fokker F27 which was showing a marked decline in sales after nearly 30 years of production.

The F50 was flown by Virgin Australia, Avianca, Skyways Express, and Denim Air (owned by 'Panta' Holdings, funnily enough.. wonder if all the women were called Jean?).

 

 

[Thought this was a timely post seeing as I have just bought myself the JF F27 Friendship. I flew on it many a time from Southampton to the Channel Islands as a young sprout]

Aquila Airways, the last British flying-boat operator, cancels its Southampton to Maderia service and closes its doors.

Aquila was well known for flying the Short Sunderland, Short Solent and Solent Sandringham from my neck of the woods, Southampton. Sadly after the end of WW2, water based operations were deemed too retrictive for airlines, who concentrated on making use of the ex military airfields.
