  1. New release from BEA... https://flightsafety.org/egyptair-804-crash-update/ This is complicated... Egypt has the lead. The investigation by the Egypt air safety organization, with the assistance of others from elsewhere, determined that they found "traces of explosives" on some of the recovered bodies. That resulted in transferring responsibility for the remainder of the investigation to Egyptian criminal authorities. That was done without releasing a "final" report from the Egyptian air safety authorities, which would have included the input from the assisting organizations. Transferring the investigation responsibility to the Egyptian criminal authorities makes it an all-Egypt show now. BEA has been trying to get the Egyptian air safety org to put out a final report what was known up to the point responsibility was transferred to the criminal authorities. Such a report has not been released - may never be released. BEA has released their own report, now saying that they believe the most plausible explanation given the information they now have from ACARS, the flight recorders and crash debris is a cockpit fire which may have spread rapidly to the rest of the AC. BEA professes to believe this information needs to be in the hands of interested parties in the aviation industry. Note that it's characterized as a favored, possible cause, not a smoking gun. The boys at PPRUNE are quick to point out that if it's "explosives" Egypt and Egyptair are more or less victims, though they could conceivably be criticized for ground-side security lapses. If it's a problem with the aircraft, the owner/operator (Egyptair) may be more complicit. That's all speculation of course but it's an interesting new development in a dormant topic. Given the particulars of the event, i.e. timeline, profile, location, carrier, etc., my suspicious mind has to go with the Egyptians on this one. I still suspect human skullduggery, but neither eventuality is proven and neither might ever be. Either side could be right. John
  2. F-35 is the "low" end of a high-low strategy, along with F-22. It's very similar to the F-15/F-16 high/low mix of a few decades ago except that the production of F-22s was stopped early with too few built. The low end, the F-35, though expensive, is considerably cheaper than the F-22 and is anticipated to be built and sold in much larger numbers. $100 million a pop isn't chump change, but if you want to be able to run with the top-dog pack in the world today, it's not going to be cheap. The idea was to build a relatively small number of the very best available and a large number of cheaper but still very capable siblings. It worked out pretty well for the F-15/F-16 mix. One difference between the F-15/F-16 and F-22/F-35 analogy is that F-22 is not being sold to any overseas customers. There is a proposal under consideration to build an advanced F-22 variant for Japan, but not sure where that stands or if it is a real possibility or not. I think the plan calls for them to be built in Japan if it goes forward, but not sure I'm remembering that correctly. Another difference is that there were no naval versions nor VSTOL versions of the F-16 but there are, of course, of the F-35. John
  3. Clicking "Add-ons" and "FSUIPC" isn't supposed to make anything happen. The fact that you have an "Add-ons" meu bar with "FSUIPC" in it means FSUIPC is installed and running. When FSUIPC is installed correctly, it starts when FS starts and is ready to facilitate communications between FS and other related programs such as Flying School. I don't have Flying School and don't know how you start it and kick it off, but clicking on Add-ons -> FSUIPC is most certainly not the way to get Flying School going. I doubt you need the paid version of FSUIPC - it adds some nifty features but most add-on FS programs only need the basic features of FSUIPC to interface with FS and all that happens in the background. The functionality of FSUIPC with respect to add-on programs is mostly invisible, except for the fact that it allows the the add-on programs to actually work. Read further, but read the documentation for Flying School to see how to get the instructor working. I don't think your problem lies with FSUIPC. Apologies if I've mis-read your problem. John EDIT: Re-reading your original post, it sounds like Flying School is working properly. Not sure what you're expecting FSUIPC to do but if Flying School is running properly, FSUIPC is already doing what it's supposed to be doing, which is allowing one program to trade data and commands with the other. Put another way, FSUIPC is not really a "hands-on" program, though some of the additional features that get turned on with the paid version are more hands-on. JDA
  4. I just did a slow troll through the 27-1/2 pages (10 per page) of new files in the Flightsim.com file library and would like to share a few impressions and thoughts. I think their "New Files" button brings up everything uploaded in the last 30 days - 257 new entries in this case. First and foremost, this has reinforced a creeping sense I've had lately that X-Plane really is becoming a mainstream contender in the flight simulation genre. There is a surprising amount of new freeware listed there for X-Plane, along with much also for FSX and P3D, of course. It's also worth noting that the flow of FS2004/FS9 stuff seems to continue unabated as well. There is even some new stuff being added for FS98, though I can't imagine why. The makeup of what's there in terms of content is about the same as always with one exception. It seems to me that AI flight plans have fallen out of favor and I didn't see too much of that offered. In the not too distant past there were pages and pages of that being uploaded every month. Otherwise, in descending order of frequency, it seems to be repaints, scenery (including airports), fixes to earlier things, complete aircraft (AI and flyable) and the occasional panel, instrument, sound file or utility. Repaints dominate, as always. Of course this is just what's been uploaded in the past month - all the older stuff, barring the odd deletion for one reason or another, is still available in their file library. It's a great resource. I have to acknowledge the developers here. I believe a large part of the reason for the popularity and longegevity of this hobby/addiction of ours is because of the unending stream of new "stuff" that we're presented with. This applies to both the freeware and the payware developers. Both have done sterling work to keep pushing us forward. One of the many charms of the whole FS thing is the richness of our options to make of our personal simulators what we want them to be with add-ons of one kind and another. In addition to those who produce the new freeware, we should also be grateful to those who maintain the on-line file libraries for us. Flightsim.com is my favorite but there are a number of others as well and they make an important contribution. It doesn't hurt either that the hardware has largely caught up with the software. Middle of the road systems seem to be able to handle a fairly robust FS without too much in the way of problems. It hasn't always been like that. It's a great time to be a flight simmer! John
  5. I'd say it worked out fairly well on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybe you were just placing us in ready reserve status in case the Germans got too feisty, which they did, twice. Anyway, it looks like that hatchet has long been buried and I count the UK as one the US' two greatest friends in the world. (The other one? I'm not saying but it lies somewhere south of Lebanon and north of Egypt.) John

  7. Old, old thread but I have to add that if you're looking for a freeware Office clone, Libre Office is pretty good. I use it exclusively now and like Open Office, it can read and write the MS Office file formats. https://www.libreoffice.org/ John
  8. Happy Birthday Andrew. Due to the location of the International Date Line, your birthday must be nearly over by now where you are. Hope you're having a great time and still enjoying every moment of it. John
  9. I struggle with the Garmin in FSX too, but have learned a few useful things that I can use it for without a lot of fumbling around. In general, it's pretty much a mystery to me. As a side note related to the GPS, the Approaches list that I include in the airport diagrams is a listing of those approaches that are built into the FSX/Garmin GPS. If you see an approach listed on one of my charts, you can expect that approach to also be available in the GPS, many with multiple transitions (which I do not list). John
  10. It seems I'm reading and commenting on old threads these days. I point out that, 3-1/2 years later there is still no TTIP and there isn't likely to be one anytime soon. The sky was not falling after all. I'm no expert on the details of TTIP, but suspect that the Brexit referendum result and the election of Donald Trump pretty much knocked the wheels of that particular government initiative. John
  11. On the Garmin GPS 500 in FSX - probably the same in P3D NRST button - > PUSH CRSR button (center of knob - top line airport ICAO will blink) -> Outer Knob Right Arrow (blinking ICAO will move down one airport - move to desired airport) -> ENT button -> Inner Knob Right Arrow to 3rd page. Will have a list of the airport frequencies, including the ILS. Obviously you have to be near enough to your destination airport for it to be listed in the top nine. John
  12. Interesting to read back through some of these old threads four years later and see that the sky really was not falling after all. 64-bit P3D and Win10 have made all this sound kind of humorous, though no doubt early 32-bit P3D with few/no add-ons and the Win 8/8.1 debacle did cause a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth at the time. Given a little patience and riding out the bumps in the road, most things get better over time. John
  13. Map view… zoom in a few clicks until you see runways, click on any runway; either airport or ILS text info will display (depending on zoom level and exactly where you click). Either will do as the ILS frequencies are in the runway table of the airport text. …or... Allard's airport diagrams. John EDIT: Just discovered that, in the Map View, just mousing over the ILS feather will pop up an info box that includes the frequency. You must have the ILS feathers turned on in the top button bar of the map view. JDA

  15. Many happy returns, Boss. You even managed to have it fall on a weekend this year. Let the celebrating begin! John
  16. That would seriously surprise me, Brian. ...but I can try it out on you if you'd like, just to see how it works. Kind of like having your friend let you try out his new Taser on you. How bad could it be? John
  17. I see we now have a "Downvote" button available. Can't wait for some clown to provide an opportunity to use it. John
  18. When FSX was published (2006) and for quite a number of years after, MS had a contract with someone (Jeppesen?) to provide RW WX. It worked by having your running instance of FSX log into the other party's WX servers and download an update periodically - every 15 minutes, I think - which was then displayed in your FSX if you had RW WX selected. Around the time period when MS dropped MS F-light and licensed FSX software to L-M and DTG, they stopped paying the freight for the RW WX from the vendor (also about the same time MS dropped the GameSpy contract, killing the in-game multi-player menu choices, but that's another story). In place of RW WX, Jeppesen, or whoever the vendor was, now provides "historic WX". Don't know the details of how that's done or if MS still pays them something but in any case, it involves fewer on-demand WX fetches from users and a smaller bandwidth hit for them. If MS is still paying part of the cost, it's probably less than when we could all get RW WX on demand from within FSX. Thank God for the add-on vendors. John EDIT: All the above is re native MS-FSX. Don't know how P3D (L-M) and FSX-SE (DTG and Steam) handle this. It may be that they, instead of MS, are paying the reduced freight rate for the RW WX that isn't, or maybe they have their own contract. It's hard to beat the REX and Active Sky payware stuff in any case. If WX is important to you and you are not using one or both of those, you should really consider it. JDA
  19. There's some pretty good analysis/speculation at PPRUNE on this. Older C-130s, before the current FADEC systems, had cables from throttle levers to engines, necessarily using a very convoluted routing. Earliest ones used 7 X 7 carbon steel cables. Later ones went to 7 X 19 stainless steel. Don't know if the cable upgrade was mandatory or if some of the older cables might still exist in older airframes. There's apparently a well known phenomenon that a broken throttle cable puts the prop into reverse pitch - at the engine, the broken cable just seems to be a command to go to beta range, so it does. That is not inhibited in flight, though to command it deliberately involves lifting the lever over a stop to pull it back into ground range. They say that several fatal C-130 take-off crashes have resulted over the years from broken throttle cables. The speculation at PPRUNE indicates that the crash profile from takeoff to impact, including going fully inverted then nose-down, is consistent with this happening, but doesn't constitute a smoking gun - other things could have caused it too. Apparently, there are two in-flight engine shut-down procedures, one for "normal" circumstances, and one to be used if a broken throttle cable is suspected, which consists of pulling the T-handle (engine fire shutdown lever, I think). I believe that moving the affected throttle lever if a broken cable is suspected can cause the loose cable to interact with other nearby things. The nine aboard were all service personnel, including some maintainers who were travelling with the aircraft. Some kind of maintenance was performed while the AC was in Savannah but there are no details given of what that may have been. That's about 110% of what I understand about this. John

    Baggage Boy

This reminds me of a real-world observation, from long ago and at an airport I can't remember. I was sitting in my seat in an airliner, I believe at an intermediate stop on the way to my destination. Watching out the window from my seat I saw a tug with an attached line of covered carts snake up beside the aircraft. The driver got out and opened the sides of the carts - can't remember how many, but more than one. Apparently they only had one side that opened (covered by a tarp of some kind if I remember correctly), and it faced away from the aircraft. He proceeded to take canvas mail bags out of the carts and heave them over the top of the carts - about 6' high - where they landed on the concrete apron on the other side of the carts and as the pile built, on one another. When he had finished that he went around the line of carts and began to load the mail bags on a belt going up to, I assume, a cargo hatch - I couldn't see it. Anyway, remember this next time you mark "Fragile" on a package. John
