  1. Good Day! I'm new to the SIM world and I'm looking for a person or group of people who are familiar with flying rotary winged aircraft to share a cockpit and chat. I'm a former Marine aviator from the CH-53E Super Stallion flight community and have recently purchased an aircraft from Nemeth Designs.   3. ATWC SiX Leg 04 "You're always bl**dy late, Doc, what was it this time?" Sam made me feel welcome, as usual: "Missed the connection at EGPE, sorry, mate!" "Well, you're here now, make yourself useful and see that the jeep is stowed securely - the engines sound good, don't they? They're both reconditioned - almost new..." Back in the cockpit, Sam was setting the NAV channels. He chivvied the tower into giving us clearance: "Why the b*gg*rs always want us to taxi to the active and not just take off from the apron beats me - every time..." I completed the checklist and gave the collective a try out. "When's the last time you drove one of these?" Sam asked. Taxi-ing in a Chinook is more luck than judgement, a lot of the time, but we were soon making our way towards the runway. "Turn right onto the runway - you are cleared for take off", said the tower. At 40 knots, the airframe started to feel a bit less cumbersome, and we were off. "Keep the runway heading and climb for a bit 'til you grab the radial..." Sam keeping me in line, clearly he knew how to stay on the right side of the Sumburgh crew. Visibility still less than a couple of miles, but there's the radial, so we turn to 77 degrees for the OBA VOR. At 2500, we're clear of the murk and can settle down to a steady 150 knots towards the rising sun. "So, where did you pick this old crock up, then, Sam?" The Chinook still has its old US markings, so Sam must have picked it up at a Defense Depot, somewhere. "Got it on eBay", mutters Sam - he's got his lap-top out and busy typing up some business stuff. "You're kidding, aren't you?", thinking that surplus aircraft aren't that easy to come by. "No, eBay-dot-RU", he replies. Turns out that he's bought 5 Ch-47s from Chechnaya, had them delivered in containers, and this is the first one he's managed to get air-worthy. "This one'll carry 3 times as much as a Super Puma, cruise at the same speed, with 20% greater range. The rear ramp's big enough for equipment loading and it'll still carry more passengers. It's ideal for rig supply", he sounds so confident. "Yeah, but will it land on a rig?", I ask. "That's what you're gonna find out! We're headed for the Oseburg rig, one of Nor-Oil's main platforms. I've told 'em we can do it, so you'd better not prove me wrong, ol' buddy!" This is going to be interesting, I thought... Some 45 minutes later, after we'd shared his thermos, Sam pointed ahead to a vague shape in the distance. "There she is, Doc - big, isn't she?" Sam clearly has a different idea about size - I squinted ahead and could just about see the vague outline of the rig After descending to around 250 feet, Sam said: "The main helipad's on the west side - don't try the other pad, last time I was here, they'd built a shed on it!" So, we approached slowly from the south - straight into the sun - brilliant! The pad is compact and the Chinook noses into it gently... We're down fairly comfortably on the ropes - and it starts raining. Sam leaps off to speak with the local management. He's really enthusiastic about this project and has put his life's savings into it. I'm optimistic about his chances, the CH-47 is a reliable work-horse, well suited to the job - it even floats, although I don't want to test that aspect, personally. While I'm waiting, I reset the NAV 1 for Flesland's VOR. The next section is less than 80 miles, so we should have dinner on dry ground - if it stops raining, of course. He's back - and full of it: "They've bought it! They never thought you'd make it with this thing - they're gonna be sending the draft contracts to the office later today so that the lawyers can get it sorted. C'mon, let's get to Flesland and sort that end out." Strapped in again, we head out east. The murk is still with us as we home in on the FLS VOR. Sam's on the radio, most of the way, and we're soon getting vectors for an approach from the north. "There she blows!", shouts Sam as the runway lights glint through the sea fret. I've not landed here before, so I'll observe decorum and approach as professionally as I can. Here we are on Long Final. That's ENBR runway 17 ahead. Flesland is on Bjoroyfjord, a few clicks south west of Bergen on the only flat land in the area. The tarmac looks dry and our approach speed is around 45 knots, so it's a good thing we've got wheels, but let's not burst any tyres... ... ATC let that 738 in right on our heels! Certainly a place to stay awake. Taxi-ing to the cargo area, trying to keep the undercarriage in one piece. Ramp down and our transport ready to disembark. Sam's already in the terminal building, tracking down a spare meeting room to use as a temporary office. "Meet you in the cafe in 45 minutes", he promises, and I shut her down... So, that's it, folks. Like i said, the snow in Inverness delayed the leg, but all's well that ends well, as the Bard said. Oh, yes, the Baton? It was in the jeep - under the driver's seat, Rob!   5. Several changes afoot around my various Airhauler operations. It all started with a trial of ORBx based products via Misha Cajic's "NA-Airstrips-Vol1" airstrips which was on sale 1/2 off recently. It's a wonderful product, and made me realize how much I missed trees and buildings...autogen and such that is missing in MSE scenery. I really hope he is working hard on Vol.2 as I will definitely be a customer. Kudos again. I decided that the perfect airplane for hauling cargos to those challenging fields was not actually an airplane... My Virtavia Ch-47 at the 98TE Glide/Hilltop field. Note the rather obviously brighter MSE Oregon scenery in the background...the NA scenery is def not intended to blend with MSE. I always found helicopters incredibly hard to get my head around...finding balance on them wise. It feels like trying to balance a top-heavy object on the tip of a nail while having to coordinate all three direction axis with one lever, as well as power and rotor pitch on a second lever for the up and down (thankfully combined in FSX or I still would not be able to fly them still...i do not have a drummer's coordination). Me hovering a helicopter was best accompanied by "Yakety Sax" as heard on Benny Hill's raunchy comedy skit show (the Yakety Sax ending skit bit being the best part of the show imo...in part because it announced the end of the show. lol). So...unlike Airplanes...i discovered ironically that the larger the helicopter the easier it is to fly...like balancing on the "head" of the nail instead of the "tip"...the Big Airplane delay works in a new copter pilot's favor unlike the way it kills new pilots of airplanes...a bit counter intuitive but sensible once you are in the seat. It still took a week of flying the Ch-47 to make me learn to love it and it's utility, landings were squirlley or figity at best, but I was getting cargos down safe...so I tried out a few more heavies and midsize copters thanks to the recent 50% Virtavia sale...Sea Stallion, Sea King, Blackhawk...all chosen for airspeed and cargo capacity. They are all fantastic, but I think I love the Sea King the best...it is a very stable flier and has a hover gauge that my mind wraps around easily. Unfortunately (for copter flying...not in general cuz it's a great product) I am MSE heavy in the scenery...flirting with the occasional red and white pole is about as fun as it gets in MSE land...and landings are very plain as far as immersion goes as the textures go to fuzz at ground level and nearby. Encouraged by my NA airstrips experience, I installed ORBx PNW scenery...and am sold on it...gorgeous for low level, and even for flying high above. I will miss the accuracy of MSE over the part of California I'm very familiar with once I get the NorCal scenery...soon as I feel flu$h or a $ale happen$. But...I don't know these Oregon mountains...Hellll...I don't know my local California mountains! This looks fabulous to me. You know...if MSE just had some darn trees show up at lower levels...it would look nearly exactly like this. Ch-47 View of PNW/ORBx: Sweet. One of the Vertols stopping over at Annacortes, Wa: The airfields make helicopter flying fun...well the landings anyhow Speaking of which...who the #&(@ left this pickup parked this close to the helicopter pad...wtf? I should swing my tail out and leave it over the taxiway. Don't blame me if a your paint got a bit "whacked" by debris...hehe...I hovered as long as i could could to sandblast the finish to a dull shine...dumbass. ( jk... Love that challenge parked there...hehe ) So...after getting my chops down on a regular basis (without banging them up, and without Benny Hilling into structures and badly parked trucks...)...it was time for a Helicopter Start-up in Airhauler, which means...gulp...Robinsons R1 22's. Now, back to that Nail Tip metaphor, the tiny little Robinson is more like flying on top of a Pin Tip...a very sharp and tipsy pin tip...definitely this was going to be a challenge for some plucky pilot. One of my Main Companies is called Eureka We Haul it...I haven't ever posted much regarding it as it is mostly heavy aircraft that afford me the ability to test out new planes with a fat wallet. AI's do all the work, I am chief test pilot for a fleet of A319, BAe146 QT, MD 81/81... and a small fleet of toys for me to fly wherever I like...my Fun Fleet company). One of Eureka's pilot's Hellen Kopp, really shined in the CH-47 while conducting AI tests in it. She is a whirley natural and I felt she was ready for taking on a Robinson and trying to get the rep necessary to attract more heli-pilots to her Oregon based startup RotoCargo. I bankrolled her with a recent model C-172 to fly her and $100K up to Oregon to open a few bases in some challenging terrain in need of some plucky chopper pilots. Now, the very very nice thing about the Robinson is that you don't have to sell your C172 to buy one outright. New price is less than 100 thousand USD...keep the Cessna as a back up, or sell it to bankroll a few more bases and have some capital on hand for emergencies. A rather pleasant surprise actually. This is Helen's first landing, full to the brim with cargo at near MTOW (short a quart of fuel or so from it's MTOW...it is Very economical to fly) at the helipad at Myrtle Creek Municiple/16S. I'm not sure how she captured this sequence from inside and outside the copter, but she says it was her first "straight in and land" with "zero fussing about/"Benny Hill action"...and in a Robinson no less. I'm pretty proud of my investment thus far: Thanks for flying along on another windy post folks. Happy hauling Matt.

  7. I got a real bargain from Just Flight, last week - their Combat Helicopter Pack: Huey plus Chinook, both from the Nemeth stable (with some help from Milviz}. I've just heard from Lee Mills, the general manager of Weston's Helicopter Museum, that they are planning the 5th Weston Flight Sim Show for Sat/Sun 17/18 May 2014: I confirmed that some of the mob from Mutley's would be turning up - again. Funnily enough, he seemed quite pleased! Now, I'm not too sure whether the format of the Weston show will be the same as previous years and there may be some changes to the contributing devs and sim groups. I am a bit biased, being a bit of a rotor-head (A BIT?!? - Ed), but the Helicopter Museum is a brilliant place for a show, and we've had a great time in years past.   11. It's back to basics with FSX - how well does the flight simulator replicate the Translational Lift Effect? To find out, I took the default Bell 206B for a short flight at Missoula airport, home to Hovercontrol. Lifting off into Ground Effect I found that I could ascend, manoeuvre and descend back to the helipad without moving the Collective - just using the Cyclic. I had no idea that FSX's helicopter flight dynamics replicated Translational Effect so well. Have a go yourself - you will be surprised - that's if you didn't know already, of course!   12. I thought I'd try out the latest helicopter offering from DCS World - the UH-1H "Huey". Here's one of my first attempts at landing the Huey after watching the DCS in-game demo. I found the flight dynamics quite challenging - the DCS Huey isn't the easiest helicopter model to fly. Overall, I found it quite realistic and very entertaining - I hope you enjoy my first impressions. Cheers - Dai.

  14. Just a quick video of my first impressions of the Nemeth Designs Hind helicopter for FSX. Probably the most famous - and, possibly, infamous - helicopter of the Cold War, the Hind has been around since the mid 70's and is still in use today.   16. This is my first FSX mission for the OrbX Pacific North West (PNW) scenery add-on. It's a Pilot for Hire Helicopter Mission, in which you take some VIP sightseers on a short helicopter tour of the Cascade Locks area, down the Columbia River to the Bonneville Dam. During the tour, an emergency crops up and you are asked to help out. The mission uses the default Bell 206B, but you can change to an alternative rotor-craft by ticking the "Enable changes in selected Mission" box should you wish..   21. Long time since using Air Hauler - too much going on, but... I remember using helicopters in AH and having to land on the numbers - i.e. touch-down on a runway and not the ramp or helipad. I guess this is still the case? Other than default (M.S. generated) helipads - which are few and far between outside major international airports - will AH handle helipads that I insert as Add-On scenery? If you could point me to the right information I'd be most grateful - Thanks! Cheers - Dai.

Now then, here's something that's not easy to explain: I've noticed that when approaching helipads on top of buildings and light-houses, you sometimes get bits of the scenery object apparently 'poking through' into the virtual cockpit. Rather than try to explain, I made the following video, containing 4 clips for vertical and horizontal movements at Wolf Rock light-house (Earth SImulations) and a helipad tower (Finney Air).   25. Some screen shots from the FSX Oil-Rig Shuttle (default) Mission using the MS Bell 206B. This Mission has some spectacular animations as the oil-rig explodes - a very exciting one which will keep you on your toes... Here we are, mid way through the Mission, approaching the oil-rig after picking the 2nd crew member: The last man is on the gantry - he's got to be rescued... ... before the rig blows up: And the crew taken safely back to Rotterdam: Maybe I'll make another video (Aarghhh!
