The download count is continuing to climb at a pretty good rate; 84 in the last day, and has broken through the 6,000 milestone.

We have a pretty scattered bunch of airports today, three in the Southern hemisphere; none in the US. None are major airports but all are fairly decent sized. The one in India has more over-run than runway. AYTK in Rabaul is pretty infamous as the site of a major Japanese air and naval base during WWII.

Wow, two days in a row with no US airports - that may be a first. Again, no majors in the list but they're what the list gods provided.

It's feast or famine on downloads - 84 yesterday, 3 today. Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you. I somehow suspect there's a correlation between the WX in the UK and the number of downloads, but can't prove it. It makes as much sense as anything else I can think of.

Congrats on the download milestone John.

Thanks, Brett.  It always kind of amazes me.  It started out with me just doing them for my own use and then Mutley talked me into writing a tutorial about how to make them.  The rest is history.  I don't think anyone was ever too interested in making their own, except that Quickmarch jumped in for a while making Canada plates.  He climbed the learning curve, seemingly without much effort and except for the e-mail address at the bottom-right, you can't tell his from mine.  Anyway, even if there's no interest in anyone else making them, some seem to like mine.  That's fine by me.

The tutorial is woefully dated now and only bears a passing resemblance to my current methods - I've never bothered to update it.  The plates, tools and techniques are all much improved over the early ones.  Mutley watched me make one when he was here in June and thought I ought to make a video of the process.

Joe is indeed a smart man.  However, there has never been any interest by anyone in doing what I'm doing (should that worry me?), so it's hard to see who/what the customer base would be.

As for videos, I've never done one so it would probably be fairly crummy.  Also, what if I liked doing videos?  There aren't enough hours in my day as it is without branching off into yet another bottomless quicksand bog.

I guess I broke the jinx on US airports - T67 in Texas is the first one we've seen in three days.

I finished off a list tonight - the one that had so many of the Papua New Guinea and SW Pacific island airports in it.  The one I pulled in to replace it looks to have a lot of North African and Middle East airports, though many of them are already done.  HEAZ in today's batch came from that list.  The list contains 61 airports but only 14 still need to be done, so this one won't last too long.  It's one of five lists in the standard rotation and those are in addition to the Brazil list that I'm doing on a one airport per day basis.

The update today is LFCC in France - updates are now coming from diagrams produced in April, 2010.  Those are the oldest remaining.  About a fifth of the diagrams are still in the old lower-res format but I'm going to have to update through about August, 2011 to get everything brought up into the current higher resolution images.  Currently I'm trying to do one update every third day so am not pounding through them very quickly.

I did an extra one today to make up for the shortfall yesterday.

The first two out of the box today, from different lists, are interesting. SBJC is named for Julius Caesar (I wonder what he'd think of that). The second one is in Rome. I swear that's a total coincidence. Sometimes this stuff is just spooky.

LIRA in Rome is a two-plater. I think this airport was formerly the main airport serving the city but there's a newer, larger one now, LIRF, which is already in the collection.

The one in Oran, Algeria has an odd layout, including a closed runway that's marked with a "C" designator, presumably meaning "Center" but there's no right or left counterpart. There are ramps and buildings that are quite a distance away from the single active runway with no connecting taxiways. The layout kind of has the look of an airport that has had parts of it abandoned in the past and what we see in FSX is the remaining parts, which would probably make more sense with the benefit of hindsight.

KTEX is Telluride, Colorado and is a request. The requestor says it's a handful to fly into, given the terrain and the field elevation, which is close to 9,100' MSL. Not for the faint of heart, I'm told. There are three non-precision approaches, including one Circle-to-Land and one Localizer (no GS). Try your luck.

Some of these are kind of interesting...

RJCJ, Chitose, or more accurately "old" Chitose, is in Sapporo, Japan. It lies hard up against the new Chitose airport. In fact some of the ground features in the FSX file for this airport properly belong to the other one. Looking at them you could be forgiven for thinking they are one big airport but FSX treats them as separate entities. This one is a two-plater.

DGTK, Takoradi Air Base in Ghana is a pretty big field but isn't lighted in FSX. I guess their air force must have a strong union and they don't have to work nights.

ME12 is a pair of water runways in a lake. It's more than a pond, despite the name.

This was a day of bigger than usual airports. KSPS, Sheppard AFB, is pretty huge including a 300' wide runway. It appears from the name to be a mixed-use field. I was pretty surprised to be able to keep it on one plate but the taxiways were pretty widely spaced and none of the labels needed to go in cluttered areas of the image.

DNKN (makes me think of doughnuts) in Nigeria has two runways with a total of three ILSs. That's more ILSs than I expected to find in the entire country. I guess the Internet money transfer scam must be bringing in enough revenue to support that kind of thing.

SBIT, in Brazil, from the name, must be just another dam airport. My Portuguese is a little rusty but I think I can make out what that word means.

KVRB, Vero Beach, Florida, got the update treatment today. That's now two plates, so if you bring the new one into your files remember to manually delete the old one; the file names are slightly different.

Just by way of a heads-up, a software testing project I'm involved in is close to heating up again. When it does I'll cut back on the production of airport diagrams while it remains in progress. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain three per day, vice the five I've been producing lately.

The two US airports today are fairly small. The Swiss one is a military field. The Algerian one has that look, but haven't seen anything to confirm it.

There are airports in this batch from a couple of countries we don't see come up very often - Russia and Zambia. For as big as it is, there are relatively few Russian airports in FSX, fewer than one hundred, I believe. That compares to something like 10,000 US airports in FSX.

Today is an update day and Dusseldorf got a workover. The former version is from FS9 and is somewhat different. All the runways have ILSs now, three of them Cat. IIIs. Taxiway labeling forced a second plate, so you should manually delete the old version if you have it - it won't overwrite automatically. This airport has a large number of custom buildings in FSX so I worked pretty hard to get them into the plate.

MUCA, in Ciego De Avila, Cuba has odd lighting. In FSX it's got approach lights at one end and VASI lights but no runway lights. I added a note to the diagram indicating this. I have occasionally seen strips with VASI to one end and no other lights but can't recall ever finding approach lights without runway lights.

Five more for your flying pleasure. Not sure how I got this deep into this project without having picked up KCLW, Clearwater FL, which is within 100 miles of me, but it did pop up from a list today and is in the bag now.

Two of this batch are military fields - there seems to be no end to them even though I've long since worked through a list that was supposed to be all of them. It appears that list was pretty incomplete. EPDE in Poland and OPSR in Pakistan are both military fields.

HL67 is pretty weird. About 10 miles south of Tobruk in Libya near a wide spot in the road called El Adam (probably a village), it's a huge, three-runway field, each one about 10,000' X 150', roughly in an equilateral triangle layout. There are no radio frequencies, no tower, no buildings at all, no MS fuel pump, no navaids nearby and no approaches. Only one runway is lighted and it has only approach lights at one end and VASI lights - no runway lights. It's named for Nasser, who was the ruler of Egypt, but the field is in Libya. I'm thinking that possibly the "67" in the airport name is a reference to the 1967 six-day war Egypt and others fought with Israel, but that's just a wild guess. In FS9 the airport has a different ICAO code, HL0L (that's a zero in the middle). I looked at it in a map view and there's more there than shown in FSX but it looks disused and nearly abandoned. There are a few automobiles parked around the place and one aircraft parked on a ramp - it looks like a Mig 21. Some of the international airport sites indicate scheduled flights there, but the satellite shots don't show any airliner types, just the Mig. There is a Wiki article and the place dates back to the Italians early in WWII. It was later used by the RAF and the USAF and is now, supposedly a Libyan air base, if they still have an air force after the Arab Spring uprisings.

There are two Brazil airports in the list today. One came from the request list, from which I'm doing one airport per day; the other one just popped up from one of the random lists. No US airports came up today.

There are two from France today. Marseille, LFML, is a pretty major airport and went to two plates. The other, LFOU, is considerably smaller and has the obligatory parallel grass runway, next to the paved one. That seems to be a common feature in European airports and is almost de rigueur for airports of a certain size range in France.

The Brazil selection today, SBBH, is quite a bit bigger than the ones we've been drawing from that list recently.

KMMS in Marks, Mississippi is so small I'm kind of surprised it has a "K" ICAO, but it does.

Several of these airports had custom buildings which adds a lot of time to making the diagrams, but it's worth it.

There was a surprise in the group today - FL61 came up. It's not only in Florida, it's right here in Ocala and I've driven by it many times without ever thinking that it might be in FSX. It popped up from one of the lists today at random. I knew there was a strip there but didn't realize there was a crossing runway down at the far end away from the road. By the way, that crossing runway is the only reason I diagrammed it - without that it wouldn't have met my inclusion criteria. The NDB that's listed at 1.9 miles away is actually the NDB at the KOCF outer marker.

I shouldn't be surprised any more by fairly elaborate desert airports in the Middle East that have no lights. Add HSGN in Sudan to the list. I guess asphalt must be more common than wiring and switchgear.

The Irish update, Inisheer, EIIR, is a tiny little place on a tiny little island.

At the other end of the spectrum today is ORMM, Basra, Iraq. It's a pretty large, full featured place with a single big runway and Cat. II ILSs to both ends.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I have an upcoming software testing assignment that's going to take some considerable time. It's upon me now and I'm going to cut the standard batch of airport diagrams back from five per day to three. I'll do an update of the oldest diagram every 5th day during that time. I will continue to include one Brazil airport per day from the list I'm working from until that is exhausted (~120 remaining). I expect that this testing activity might continue for several weeks or longer. Also, the monthly update of the Country Bundle files is coming up on or about the 29th. There will be at least one full day, possibly more, devoted to that with no new diagrams produced.

The Brazil airport today is in Argentina. That's what was on the list. This one is near Brazil and I expect it's a place the guy who gave me the list uses or has an interest in.

The strip in Hawaii is very small and narrow. The runways are not numbered, but are designated as NE and SW instead, much like we see with water runways. There's not much to it, but it's paved, so got a diagram.

Aden Intl, OYAA, is a pretty big place.
