Happy belated April Fool day - I hope no one got you.

Today is an update day, so the oldest one in the collection got a re-work. It is M79, Hooks Meml, in Rayville LA.

Travis AFB fell out of the military airfields list today, with two long parallel runways, but not side by side. They are offset longitudinally so they span quite a distance. The field has an extensive taxiway network so it required two plates. There were about three custom buildings but one is just a square, so doesn't add much in the way of interest to the diagram; it might as well have been a stock building, though I'm sure it's more interesting when viewed from ground level.

The national capitals list yielded HBBA, Bujumbura Intl, in Burundi. It appears to be a pretty well appointed place as these third world capital airports go - we've seen a lot worse. It pretty much seems to have all the aviation comforts of home.

All four of the lists I'm working from have a large number of airports remaining, and I have two more lists waiting in the wings as replacements. It seems likely that the national capitals list (~ 250 lines) and the military airfields list (~ 400 lines) will be the first two exhausted, but it won't be soon. The other two current lists are from a payware traffic program file (about 7,000 lines) and another from a source I don't even remember - that one contains only certain countries - US, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and maybe a handful of others. It's a huge list - over 17,000 lines, so I think it contains all the airports in the included countries. Many of them get dropped as I encounter them if they don't meet the criteria for inclusion.

I ran all of the lists through a randomizing routine, so there's no predicting what will come up next.

Of course, when I diagram an airport I check all the lists and cross it off anywhere it occurs, so there's a lot of double counting going on.

I have three new ones for you today. The first is a small municipal in Oklahoma, H04 in Vinita. It's a one strip field with the usual small ramp and a few buildings, actually a few more than a few, but no fuel pump, no tower.

Next up was a Canadian field, CEL4, Hanna, in Alberta. This one is not unlike the one in Oklahoma, except that it also has a pair of grass runways too, and a fuel pump on the field. The longest runway is about 3,500 feet.

The biggest one today is EGXE, Leeming AB, in Leeming UK. I'm not sure how I got this deep into this project without picking up this one, which appears to be a fairly major installation. It has only one active runway, and a small remnant of a closed one that appears as if at one time it was much longer.

I did bypass three small US airports that were on one of the lists today. None of the three met the criteria for being diagramed. I let them go and kept working down the list until I hit one that did.

There are two new airports and an update of an old one today. All are pretty small fields with not too much remarkable about them. One, NVVV, in Vanuatu, has a custom building sitting in the middle of it's tiny ramp, which is kind of unusual. That one came from the national capitals list but is situated on a relatively tiny island.

The update, 3M8, North Pickens, in Reform, Alabama, was originally done in October 2009. From looking at the old files, that must have been a busy month for airport diagrams and I'll be a while plowing through them at the rate of one every other day.

These three are a pretty mixed bag - a Micronesian International, a Dutch air base and what has the appearance of an air base in Korea, though it's not labeled as such. Oddly, the smallest is the International, which is also the only one with a custom building - the terminal, I guess.

The Korean one is pretty odd, with a few taxiways labeled with numbers instead of letters and only those along one of two parallel runways labeled at all.

My thanks to subscriber Gene Ayers, who noted an error on the diagram for RKPS, posted on 4/5/13. It's been corrected and the file in the MH File library has been updated.

Besides the corrected RKPS, today's work also includes an update of the oldest file, KDNN, in Dalton, Georgia, originally done in 10/2009.

The new ones include 07Y, a small grass strip in Minnesota, with a short taxiway connecting to an unpaved ramp at one end. The ramp was enough to hoist this one over the bar for inclusion - without that I'd have passed it by.

The last one today is LGZA, Dionysios Solomos, in Zakinthos, Greece. This island airport has a fairly generous paved runway (7'316 X 148) with a ramp, fuel, navaids on the field, a couple of buildings, three taxiways connecting the ramp to the runway, and overruns at each end. Three circular turnaround pads on each half of the runway give it the look of a string of beads. Since the runway is 148 feet wide, the place must be built for some fairly large aircraft if additional turning room was thought to be necessary. My traffic program only shows an Air Berlin 737-800 and an Olympic Dash 8 on the ramp and a couple of Barons in the neighborhood. Any of those should be able to manage a 180 degree turn in 148 feet. I'm wondering if there's a 747 or an A340 lurking somewhere in the traffic files.

I ended up with two USAF bases today, both in the western US. One came from the military airfields list and the other just fell out of one of the non-specific lists. One of them, Hill AFB in Ogden UT required a second plate to label the taxiways without making a mess of the main view.

The third airport is TDPD, Melville Hall, in Dominica, in the eastern Caribbean.

For some reason I was in an airport diagram kind of mood today and as a result you're getting a double batch - five new and an update. That normally represents two days production. The last three new ones, one in Alaska and two in Yukon Territory, are from a request list, now finished. I'll be back to using the routine lists tomorrow, barring the arrival of any new requests.

With the exception of San Javier in Spain and the update, Cherry Point MCAS, the rest are pretty small airports and were relatively quick and easy to do.

Cherry Point is an interesting layout. It has four runways at right angles, but they are offset and laid out in a "wagon wheel" pattern, all crossing near their ends in the middle of the field. What a place for plane spotting that little dead zone in the middle of all four would be.

It may well be that you've never heard of ANY of today's airports - OK, maybe you've heard of Wiesbaden, but the airport I did is an Army Air Force field, not the commercial airport. These all seem to be a little - - - shall we say, obscure? Sometimes that happens with randomized lists such as those I'm using.

CYPK, Pitt Meadows, BC is from Quickmarch and the rest are mine. I got a little flummoxed today and thought that today was an update day, so did one, but didn't need to. There will definitely be no updated airports tomorrow, and maybe not even the day after that, since I'm a day ahead of the update game.

I've had a request list for a bunch of small airports in Alaska and they are all done and in today's batch. With the three I normally do, one in Canada from Quickmarch and the ten in Alaska, there are fourteen new ones today. Don't be expecting this every day.

March's airport is CYNJ, Langley, in British Columbia. It's a pretty good sized place with two runway, one paved, and a bunch of buildings.

My three random selections from the normal lists are LIPR, Rimini Military in Italy (a two-plater), LGMT a medium sized field in Greece, and 5SX6, with the imaginative name of "Old Reb" in Mercedes, Texas. That last one is pretty small, but the strip is paved, so it made the cut.

Some of the ten Alaskan airports would not have met my inclusion criteria, save by being on a request list. If someone wants an airport that's good enough for me.

After yesterday's Baker's Dozen plus one, this probably seems like a short batch, but it's one better than the three I normally do and with one from Quickmarch (1S0) thrown in that makes five.

March has started an AirHauler company in British Columbia so is concentrating on that general area. I believe 1S0 in Puyallup WA may be his first non-Canadian effort, but it's pretty close to the line where the map turns white.

LIED, in Italy, makes my list of airports with unfortunate ICAO codes, along with KRAP and FOOL. It's a military field with two long, parallel runways and not much in the way of detail. For whatever reason a lot of military fields got that treatment by FSX. Maybe it was a security issue. I guess they never heard of satellites.

LBSF, Sofia, Bulgaria came off the national capitals list and seems to be a decently appointed airport, though is single runway. The layout is complex enough that it required a second plate to label the taxiways and the place had quite a large number of complex, non-stock buildings too.

KCKC is Grand Marias in Minnesota. I never heard of it but it's a small non-towered muni like ten thousand others.

I did an update today, MYEH, in the Bahamas. I'm still working on the October 2009 files, which seemed to have been a pretty productive month - there are a lot of them.

I don't have much to say about any of these three new airports. These are the plums that fell out of the tree today, such as they are, scattered far and wide on three different continents. These represent the 322nd airport I've done in Europe (not counting the UK which adds another 143), the 162nd in South/Central America (and the islands of the Caribbean) and the 128th airport in Africa. To all of those, and the other categories too, I should add the phrase, "...and counting."

If you have favorites or fields you like to fly out of often, let me know and I'll be happy to put them at the top of my lists.

I'd very much like to have 2,000 airports in the bag before Mutley comes to visit in late May. It's looking to be just possible at the current rate, so I may have to push a little harder than my average of 2.5 new ones per day.

By the luck of the draw, all of these are in the US today; three new and an update.

The update is Ellington, KEFD, in Houston TX. It is, these days, a joint civil and military field with Texas ANG and USCG units based there alongside a civilian airport operation owned by the city of Houston.

KNZK is Harold NOLF, in Florida, not far NE of Pensacola. I looked up NOLF to see what the exact meaning was - I kind of knew it was some sort of Navy auxiliary airfield but never really had the acronym nailed down. Per the Internet, it stands for Navy Outlying Field. "Outlying" seems to mean there's nothing here but runways. This field's claim to fame, in my book at least, is that it has the widest runways I've discovered so far in FSX, with two grass strips in a T-pattern that are listed at 1400' wide. Prior to finding this one, I'd considered Halton AB (EGWN) in the UK to be the winner, with a pair of grass runways listed by FSX at 999 feet wide. KNZX beats that hands down. There may be wider ones yet lurking in FSX, but if so I haven't stumbled upon them yet. I've seen plenty of FSX fields that aren't as long as these are wide.

KMBS has a personal connection. The airport name, MBS Intl, is a reference to the three nearby cities of Midland, Bay City and Saginaw, in Michigan. This airport was my destination on the first leg of my real-world student cross-country flight in a C-152, on 3/9/1980. After leaving there on the second leg there began an adventure best left to tell about on another day - suffice to say it involved an un-forecast snowstorm, a sectional not aboard and a Greyhound bus. My last flight before giving up real world flying was also to and from there, in April 1982. I brought back a crib mattress in the back seat of a Grumman AA5 Tiger, in preparation for the impending arrival of my daughter.

Quonset State, KOQU, in North Kingston RI is another joint use airport. I don't have any personal stories about this one, despite having spent quite a bit of my Navy time in Newport, Rhode Island, not all that far away. At that time it was Quonset Point NAS and, believe it or not, the Navy had a number of their aircraft carriers, mainly the ASW types, working out of there. I've found photos of the USS Leyte (CVS-32), USS Wasp (CVS-18), USS Bennington (CVS-20), USS Antietam (CVS-36), USS Intrepid (CVS-11), USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39)USS Tarawa (CVA-40), USS Wright (CVL-49) and USS Essex (CVS-9) moored there, all home-ported at Quonset Point at one time or another. In stock FSX the old carrier pier and another smaller pier are shown jutting into Narragansett Bay near the approach end of runway 05. They lie outside the airport flatten and the textures are just suburban landscape. If you didn't know what they were, you wouldn't know what they were.

Five more today, all new, from pretty much all over the map. Except BL8 in British Columbia, they are mostly pretty decent sized airports. I guess in some of the social media jargon that could be interpreted as "Be Late", but I'm not much plugged into those things, preferring to actually use real words and to spell and punctuate properly whenever I can manage it. I have no doubt that the various "Sister Mary [Name Here]s" who educated me would seek me out and rap my knuckles if I did otherwise.

BL8 only made it in by virtue of having an NDB on the field. Absent that, the single gravel strip with no buildings, fuel pump, etc, would not have made the cut.

FVHA, Harare Intl, in Zimbabwe, has a pretty generous 15,500' X 151' runway but also lies at about 4,900' elevation, so that may partially account for it. If you're going to fly jetliners out of high airports, long runways are beneficial. It also boasts a full-length parallel taxiway, not necessarily a given even at some of the big international airports in the nether regions of the world.

The others, a muni (KUKI) in California, a military field in Italy (LIRG) and Bahrain Intl (OBBI) in Bahrain are all about what you'd expect - nothing noteworthy about any of them, except that, unusually, the Italian military field is not lighted, which I thought a little odd.

I'm trying to maintain a little higher production rate until I click over 2,000 airports in the collection. The goal is to do that by May 29th or sooner. Requests are welcome, as always.

I have three new and an update for you today. I finished the last one pretty late and haven't much to say about them, except that I can remember when Zagreb was in Yugoslavia, and that I lived in Michigan for 55 years and never heard of either Blissfield or Betz.

Here's another thrilling collection of places you never heard of, but might someday fly to anyway (particularly if you use AirHauler - it knows about all these out of the way places). OK, to be perfectly honest, I had heard of Toulouse and Bay City.

By coincidence, this is the second Bay City in a few days. I noted when I sent KMBS, MBS Intl in Saginaw MI last week or over the weekend that it serves the cities of Saginaw, Midland and Bay City, Michigan. It's a different Bay City, however - today's is in Texas.

By way of statistics, I notice that six of the last 20 new airports are in the US, while six of the last 10 updated airports are US fields. I think I understand why the proportion of US airports was so much higher then. You might be forgiven for thinking that it may be largely because so many airports in the US (almost 750) have already been done. There may be something to that but I don't believe it's a huge factor, however, since those that have been diagrammed are only about 10% of the total number of US airports. Most of the larger ones are done, but a large one and a small one are each one item in the selection list, with neither favored over the other if both are in the list.

My selection methods circa 2009, when the current updates were originally picked for diagramming, consisted of using AirHauler job generation routines, centered on a pair of bases, one in Ocala FL and one in Southampton, England, on alternate days. As a result, almost half of the airports selected were in the US, though there was the occasional odd one from the Bahamas, Cuba or Mexico. The other half mostly came from England, Scotland, Ireland and France - many from France.

Selection now alternates between four lists. One, the list of national capitals is clearly biased against the selection of a US airport - it's just not going to happen from that list. Another very large list is from a subset of countries, including the US, but also a dozen or more others, including some airport-rich places such as the UK, Australia, Canada and Brazil. Because so many of the smaller countries are not represented in that list, it is a little more likely to pop out a US airport than, say, a list of every airport in FSX, but nothing like the Ocala-centered AirHauler job list did.

A third current list, military airfields, might conceivably have had a higher propensity to spit out a US base since there are so many of them, but in reality, many of them have been diagrammed and the proportion of them remaining is fairly low. As it stands right now, that list is probably slightly biased against producing a US base. Only two in ten of the last picks from that list were US bases.

Finally there's a large list derived from the airports list of a commercial FSX traffic program which generates traffic world wide. Since it favors larger airports, and most of the US ones are already diagrammed, non-US airports fall out of that most of the time too.

In the past, some used-up lists did favor US airports; three that come to mind are the US state capitals list, a request list for all current US Naval Air Stations and a list of airfields used on an early trans-continental US Air Mail route, all now completed and no longer in use. The latter two were request lists from users.

Nothing is absolute and randomness rules. All my lists are carefully randomized (is that an oxymoron?) before I begin to use them.

One future list that will be US biased is of the 148 US control towers being closed due to the sequester budget cuts. About 40+ of them are already done and I'll begin using that list when one of the others finishes up. That looks like it will be the national capitals list, which I expect to exhaust in a little less than two months.

It's a small batch today. The updated one, the international at Athens, Greece was a back-breaker, requiring five FSX top-down screenshots to capture custom building footprints and three plates to get the runways blown up large enough to label the taxiways. Anyway it's done, but took most of the time I had available for diagrams today.

The other one, Willow Grove NAS in Pennsylvania, was pretty easy by comparison. I believe the JRB in the airport name refers to "Joint Reserve Base". Not sure if this means it hosts reserve units from different service branches or if it means joint operations with a civil facility - or both.

I hope to be able to do more tomorrow. I'll never get to 2,000 at this rate.

I managed a normal batch today - four new ones. All turned out to be pretty small and simple.

TLPC in Castries, St. Lucia, is the airport serving the capital of that Caribbean island, but isn't much different from 6V3, Tazewell Co, in Richlands, Virginia. Both are relatively small single-strip fields with modest ramps and taxiways.

NY18 in Ithaca, New York is a fooler, billed as Nena Intl. It turns out to have a pair of grass runways in an L configuration and nothing else. Some international. I diagrammed it because two runways meets my inclusion criteria.

EKVA is Vandel AB in Vandel, Denmark but got the usual MS treatment for air bases - it shows two parallel runways with a control tower between them - it's not even lighted. There are no other structures, taxiways or ramps. It's a shame but that's what MS gave us.

As with yesterday, a normal batch of four, including one update, MULM in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, which is a relatively small field.

The biggest of the new ones is LATI, in Tirana, Albania, the capital. It's what I would characterize as a medium-sized field, about what you'd expect in the national capital of a small country.

8S1 in Polson, Montana has the look of a typical muni, with one paved runway, a parallel taxiway, a good sized ramp, but oddly, many, many small buildings. In the sim they show up as very tall hangar types, all the same, and are of a stock FSX building type. The place has no nearby navaids but does have four approaches, two each of GPS and RNAV.

TX93 is simply two disconnected grass strips and nothing else. Two runways gets it in the door.

A pretty mixed up bunch for today, on four continents. SCCI, in Punta Arenas, Chile is a military field and is the biggest airport of today's group, with three good sized runways.

UG24 in the suburbs of Tbilisi, Georgia, YWWG, Yarrawonga in Victoria, Australia, and O13 Haddock, in Erick, Oklahoma are all pretty minimal airports. In the case of the latter, you can't expect much when you see one of those 3-character ICAO codes.

Five more today, four new. LGKL, Kalamata AB in Greece is the update. It's an odd one with the single runway labeled 17R/35L. Delusions of grandeur; future plans; Microsoft error? I did a little real-world snooping and found a reference to 17L/35R with the annotation "(now taxiway)". I guess that explains it.

Managua, Nicaragua (MNMG) is the biggest of the new ones today. It's a typical small-country, one-runway (8,000') international with a lot of buildings, a few custom.

All the others are muni-size or less, with CEP5, Javier, Alberta bringing up the rear - just a gravel runway and a small gravel ramp.

As you might have surmised from the list above, random selection has been set aside and I'm working from a newly received request list. There are more to do from that list tomorrow but that should finish it. Until it's done, updates to old airport diagrams are suspended, as is my normal policy.

Most of these are smallish one-strip fields without much in the way of FS niceties, though most are paved and three of the five have a MS fuel pump situated somewhere next to the runway. The outlier is NZQN, Queenstown, which is a relatively full-featured airport with three runways (one paved, one grass, one dirt), taxiways, ramps, custom buildings, navaids, ATIS, a tower and published approaches.

This more than doubles the number of New Zealand airports in the collection so far. More Kiwi places tomorrow....

This bunch represents the end of the New Zealand request list and two more from one of the normal lists. TGPY, in St Georges, Grenada is a bit of a coincidence, having fallen out of my lists on the exact date of the celebration of St. George's day in the UK.

That last one, W91, Smith Mountain Lake, in Virginia has a minor personal connection.

Smith Mountain Lake is man-made, formed by a dam. The dam, its associated power plant and the lake are a pumped storage facility, where water is pumped up into the reservoir during the night and at off-peak times, using the un-needed capacity of other lightly loaded conventional power plants. During the day or at other peak times the water is released through the generating units to produce power. The Smith Mountain dam and power plant happen to be owned by the electric utility company for which I worked. I never had the opportunity to visit and see it in person, but I have seen photos many times.

Tomorrow I expect to be back to the normal routine of lists and will include an update of the oldest diagram in the collection in tomorrow's batch.

I haven't much to say about these. The update, LGIR, in Greece is by far the most complex, with three runways (one closed) and some labeled taxiways.

HSSJ in Juba, Sudan has two parallel runway but one of those is closed. It's listed as the airport serving the capital of Sudan. It's pretty Spartan in terms of facilities.

CEM, in Central, Alaska is just a small gravel strip with a gravel ramp. It has a whopping 32 degree magnetic variation.

ENNA is a Norwegian airbase. It has a tower, ILSs (2 - one is Localizer only) and other published approaches. At 70 North, 5 degrees further north than our Alaskan entry today, I expect it's a pretty inhospitable place much of the time - no wonder they have published approaches.

None of the four airports today had an ILS and in fact none even had a published approach, despite one being from the national capitals list (UGSS) and one being an air base (ETNT).

1B4, Kamp, in Durhamville NY has a pair of crossing runways, one paved, one grass, but small - the paved one is 3221 X 40. It's got a small ramp and a few buildings.

LECU is in Madrid, but isn't THE Madrid airport.

ETNT a German air base (former East German?) is fairly large, but sparse in terms of buildings and such.

UGSS is a big airport too, and has the trademark former Soviet Union taxiways - numbered instead of lettered.
