hurricanemk1c 195
'New German plaque for downed Dambuster crew' http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/britain-at-war/10038011/New-German-plaque-for-downed-Dambuster-bomber.html Interesting how it says gibson was shot down in September 1944 - no-one really knows, but I read somewhere it was incorrectly switching fuel tanks
ddavid 149
One theory is that Gibson was shot down by a Lanc returning from another operation - see here: http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/guy_gibson_death.htm Like Mallory, of Everes famet, Gibson's death dramatically enhanced his memory as a hero of the people. You rarely hear about Leonard Cheshire, who also commanded 617 Squadron and received the VC. He survived the war, witnessed the destruction of Nagasaki from the 'plane that dropped Fat Man and promptly left the RAF, later to set up a charitable refuge for homeless people - more recently called Cheshire Homes. Funny old world, eh? Cheers - Dai.
