Hi all!

A Kalitta Air 747-209F, N704CK (22299/462) over-ran Runway 20 of Brussels Airport yesterday.

None of the 4 crew were injured thankfully!

Aircraft assumed W/O, since the hull is in 3 parts or more, forward section, middle section (containing wings until the main cargo door on left side) and the tail.

I read elswhere that it was an aborted take-off after the pilot heard "a loud noise". I'm thinking maybe he heard some more loud noises not too long after that.

I looked up V1. It is defined as...

Quote
Maximum speed during takeoff at which a pilot can safely stop the aircraft without leaving the runway. This is also the minimum speed that allows the pilot to safely continue (to V2 takeoff) even if a critical engine failure occurs (between V1 and V2).[

It's my understanding that if a problem occurs after V1 you're committed to take-off anyway because you no longer have room to stop. Still, my instructor used to tell me, "...better the fence at 50 than the trees at 120."

"Engine fire may have preceded Kalitta 747 aborted takeoff and crash, according to a report by Flight International. Air traffic controllers have reported seeing a fire in one of the aircraft's two starboard engines during the takeoff sequence."
