Displayports

I have discovered 3 displayports on the back of my pc. I had no idea what they were but enquiries have led me to believe I can run multiple extended screens.

a) Is this correct?

b) If I get another two monitors and leads do I just plug the monitors in?

I don't really want to waste money until I have all my facts clear, so any non-tech-talk explanations would be appreciated

Hi Lucy,

 

Yes you can. I am running 3 monitors, 1 on DVI-D, 1 on HDMI, and 1 on DP. I still have another 2 DP's available on my card for use, if necessary. Just make sure that you get the applicable leads.

What display resolutions you can get will depend on the graphics card and how much Vram it has. Quarts and pint pots - don't expect to run three 4K displays AND FS off an old 1GB card, is all I'm saying.

thing is I have had two different responses from various sources, some say what you guys say and others have said I need a DisplayPort Multi-Monitor Splitter. I prefer to take Mutley information as the most knowledgable, but I find it damn confusing, do I just need the leads from pc to monitors or do I need a two, three or four-way splitter, (depending on how many monitors). Buying a DMS would still leave two displayports unused....Pllease clear that element of confusion please

I have 2 monitors running, one though is very small and I only use for GPS or moving map......I connect my monitor (main) via HDMI lead and as the other monitor is old I have a dvi-d convertor, still have another connection available, I can't see the need for a DMS but happy to be proved wrong.......

 

be aware that some advice someties over complicates things when there is no need, like others have said it will depend on your card as to what you get....

I have a couple of monitors, one with my current machine and a spare, only about a year old.

OK, I'm happy with the answers here, (as always.) But how would I extend a cockpit across 2 or 3 monitors? Would it be windowed and dragged across?

I'm not really too clever with computers so sorry about this

Hi Lucy, You are correct, dragging it across just stretches the view, which makes the cockpit look out of proportion. I just use my other monitors for things like my Active sky, GTN, Checklists and ATC. There are programmes for multi monitor cockpit views like WIDE VIEW, but you need FSUIPC and usually a networked PC. In your case I wouldn't think it would be worth the effort.

I went to what's left of Maplins and found the leads I needed and it all works fine. damn! listening to others could have cost me up to an unnecessary £100, so thanks for the info, and yes, Neil, I think there's much more I can use on my monitors, such as Plan-G and Navigraph, Active Sky, etc. Thanks again guys.

nice one, glad you got it sorted and saved some cash, only splitter I have ever bought is for HDMI as I only have 1 socket on the monitor but needed to connect PC and PS4, otherwise you don't really need one, and all that does is saves me reconnecting leads....
