FMC minimum input

Right so today's question for the class.......

 

I am fine with setting up the FMC in Boeing, Airbus, Dash etc so I have no issues but I have a question. If I want to fly but use ATC guidance as opposed to a flight plan what are the minimums I need to enter? Or should I enter the plan but not activate the AP to follow, example Boeing don't press LNAV / VNAV....

 

I am also keen to learn how to follow ATC guidance for Departure / Arrival but when they say 'resume own Navigation' follow an inputted flight-plan....

 

So two scenarios there, any advice on either most welcome.
