Russias first modern widebody, The IL-86

Recommended Posts

The Ilyushin Il-86 was Russias first serious foray into the widebody market, Ilyushins engineers actually went to Boeing to find out how they got the engines to balance correctly on the wings as this idea had not been tried before in the USSR ! The IL-86 first entered service in 1980. 106 were built. The aircraft was aimed at not only the Russian domestic market but overseas sales as well, It featured a lot of unique features, most notably the lower deck entrance lobbies which meant it could serve airfields with minimum loading facilities. Sadly none were sold in the west but a lot of western avionics found their way onto the aircraft. It proved to be a successful aircraft and they were seen regularly worldwide. Many of the features on the IL-86 found their way on to the later IL-96 which was even more compliant with western safety and emmision regulations. In spite of its excellent service and reliability record by 2011 only 6 were left in service and 3 of those were with the Russian Air Force........
