allardjd 1,853
3/2/13 Airport Diagrams Update I'm starting the new monthly thread on the heels of the File Libary and other parts of MH having been repaired. That's prety much caused a disruption in my updating in the Februrary thread. I'll go back and put links in those, but I'm going to begin this month by just listing the airport diagrams that have been added to the MH File Library and have not been reported in the update threads. So here goes... EDIT - 10-29-17: The MH File Library no longer exists but airport diagrams are still available for free download in bundles, by country (by state or province in Canada, Australia and US) from the MH Airport Diagrams Download Center. Bundles are updated monthly to roll in new and revised diagrams. allardjd 1,853
3/4/13 Airport Diagrams New: EPWA Okecie - Warsaw, Poland 75K Bethany Meml - Bethany, Missouri - US GABS Senou - Bamako, Mali Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,776; downloads 2,243; subscribers 13 None from Colombia today - sorry. This is a standard mix from the standard lists. The first one, in Warsaw is from the national capitals list and must be one of the few remaining on that list that are from principal countries. Most of what is left to be done there are from the more obscure places. The other two are from a couple of very large, non-descript lists, I think probably gleaned from traffic program airport listings. Those tend to run the whole gamut from the large to the small. I discarded three that were beneath the inclusion criteria before coming upon Bethany, Missouri. Mali is much in the news today, with the jihadists butting heads with a government that is not quite hard-line Islamic enough for them. The latter are supported by the French. I haven't looked to see if this particular location is in the battle zone or not. It's a lot more airport than I expected for Mali, so is probably in the government held portion, at least for now. allardjd 1,853
3/5/13 Airport Diagrams New: LFSO Ochey AB - Nancy, France EGVP Middle Wallop Army - Middle Wallop, UK OPRN Chaklala Intl - Islamabad, Pakistan Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,779; downloads 2,248; subscribers 13 SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING EGVP: This link might help explain what happened with EGVP... http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/6393-not-all-airports-are-the-same/?hl=egvp The bottom line is, there are now three versions of EGVP available to you within the collection, one each for the UK2000 freeware, the Traffic 2005 AFCAD and the stock FSX. The one added today is the stock FSX version. I don't have the stock FS9 version diagrammed but am happy to take that as a request if anyone wants to have it. I came at this in a roundabout way - I set out to do an update today and the oldest file in the set was EGVP, the T2005 version (don't even ask how that got in there). Upon looking at the whole situation, I didn't want to destroy that one or replace it with the stock FSX version. I elected instead to just make the FSX stock one from scratch and add it to what was already there - what began as an update wasn't an update at all. Does anyone have more air bases than the French? Mon Dieux, mes amis - get a grip! It's not like you're part of NATO or anything important like that. They may be planning to use them for the stages of the Tour de France, assuming they can find any "athletes" who can pass the whiz-in-the-bottle test these days. I wonder if they're keeping the Maginot Line in good repair too? Anyway, here's another French AB, this one in Nancy. The last one today wrapped back around to the national capitals list and puked up Islamabad, Pakistan, the civil airport, not the nearby military one. Interesting city name - I couldn't have said it any better myself. I guess, given the location and the direction the local wind blows, "bad" doesn't mean quite the same thing there it does here. Frankly I was kind of surprised that this was such a modest airport for such a densely populated country. It's a nice long runway if you're not too picky about those long overruns, but there are only three buildings shown, including the control tower, and none appear to be very large - that's kind of sparse for the national capital of a country with almost 200 million people. They all must have to go somewhere else to sleep when there's an airline strike or a snowstorm on a holiday weekend - the terminal just doesn't seem big enough for many of them. I ran out of steam before running out of chores. The two Canadian ones are from Quickmarch, who continues to bang them out at a steady pace. In the case of MMCU, I suspect the airport name is truncated in FSX and that the last part is probably "Villa" or something longer. Sometimes you can mouse over the name in FSX and it will show you the rest. In this case it didn't, so I've documented what's there, not what I think should be there. K19, in Missouri, puts me in mind of a certain ill-fated Russian nuclear sub, subject of a Harrison Ford movie, "K-19 Widowmaker". Hopefully this airport has a better reputation and better luck than its namesake. Blame it on the lingering effects of this cold. KBIF, Biggs AAF in Ft Bliss, Texas is the 700th US airport in the collection, by far the biggest sub-group. The next nearest is Europe with just over 300, however the UK is a separate group with another 140+ of its own. This one came form the military airfields list. UACC is in the capital of Kazakhstan and is, predictably from the national capitals list. I did manage to get a bona-fide update done in this batch, Boscombe Down. I love the names of UK airfields. I think Middle Wallop and Lower Upham are my favorites. This is a standard mix from the standard lists. I note that the update, EGLA was originally diagrammed from FS9 and this is the FSX version (this is common with most of the updates now). What caught my eye is the field elevation, 650' MSL now but only 625' in FS9. I guess the threatened sea level rise from the global-warming induced melting of the ice caps didn't happen after all, eh? It sounds like the opposite effect is in full swing and the sea level is falling. Whatever will we do? So now it's "climate change" instead of global warming - potentially less embarrassing for algore and the climate Nazis if it "inconveniently" goes the wrong way. UB13, Stepanakert airport, in Stepanakert, Azerbaijan is from the national capitals list but is shown as being in "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic" in the list. MS FSX has it as being in Azerbaijan. Wiki says it's a republic in the South Caucasus recognized by only three other states, all of which are also not recognized by the UN. It sounds like it was argued over, if not actually fought over, by Armenia and Azerbaijan for a few years following the collapse of the Soviet Union but has since been left to go its own way with little international recognition - kind of like Sealand, I guess. He had this to say about his... "Attached, my latest two - CYPY and CEY3. Both end-of-the-world airstrips somewhere/nowhere in Canada. At least they're easy to do." I guess I can take credit for SAZB, an Argentinean Naval Air Station from the military fields list, as a commemoration of the unsurprising voting results in the Falklands Islands over the past two days. Predictably, the Falkanders overwhelmingly wish to remain a British Overseas Territory and Argentina be damned. Si, Senora Kirchner, yes we have no desire to be Argentinean subjects. See, Senora? Gracias, but non-gracias - but thanks for thinking of us anyway. I have to admit to looking up the Comoros to see where FMCH should be binned - Africa, it turns out. It's in the Mozambique Channel. I really wasn't sure. That one was from the national capitals list. The last one is in South Dakota, a small, non-towered muni - if you're not from South Dakota you've probably never heard of it. As usual he's sent some interesting comments about it... "When I (we) moved to Vancouver from Toronto, we purchased a house right down on the US/Can border in a little town called White Rock. This is approx 30 miles as the crow flies from Chilliwack (another, doubtless, Indian moniker). One day, in the fall of that year, I noticed a truck and trailer, heaped with corn, beside the road into White Rock. It had a huge sign on it CHWK CORN. I bought some - it was the most wonderful corn. Took me weeks to get up the nerve to ask what a CHWK corn was. You got it! Chilliwack..." Mine are less interesting. KLAL, Lakeland Linder was up for an update, originally done in October of 2009. This one became a 2-plater in the update process. That's the scene of the EAA's Sun 'n Fun show, or as I think of it, Oshkosh South. Not quite in the same league as Oshkosh, but still a pretty good show. 42KY, Pirates Cove in Kentucky is another FSX oddity. For some reason the ARP (Airport Reference Point) is well over 8,000' from the center of the smallish (3,000') runway. I put a note to that effect in the plate, mainly because the distance and bearing to navaids is actually measured from the ARP. When the point of reference is a mile and a half from anywhere you might really want to be, it behooves you to know that. Dutch John is an odd looking airport with an odd name, out in the wilds of Utah. Nothing spectacular, just a little unusual in layout. The scenery looks pretty desolate. I didn't do all of them - over fifty belong to Quickmarch, who's spreading his wings and taking on some of the more complex fields in Canada these days. There are plenty left - both in Canada and elsewhere. Depending on where you do the counting, FSX has something around 30,000 airports. Many don't make the cut in our inclusion criteria, but most do so there are many, many left to do. MGGT in Guatemala City, from the national capitals list, is a pretty dense airport and required two plates today. Also included today is ENRY, a Norwegian airbase, which came from the military airfields list. Those two lists, national capitals and military airfields, will eventually run out - about sixty remain in the former and over twice that many in the other one, but eventually more lists will be needed. I've started development of another list and that one is kind of open-ended. Unfortunately, it is almost exclusively US and Canadian airports so far and I'm looking for a way to broaden that. There are a lot of both but I'm making a concerted effort to make sure this is as world-wide as possible. The update is Jacksonville NAS, KNIP. It's even got some interesting custom buildings. I've been there in person a couple of times for air shows and they always put on a good one. I'll never forget the Blue Angels support AC, a C-130A, doing a RATO takeoff. It was the loudest thing in the show, topping even six of the Blue Angels FA-18s going at the speed of heat later in the show. Another highlight of one of those was a very high-speed pass by an AF F-15, who kind of cut the corner and came directly overhead at the end where I was standing. I could feel the noise of his passing through the soles of my feet. Love it. I was blissfully unaware of 2T1, Muleshoe Mun at the city of the same name in Texas. Ditto Korogoussou, in Gao, Mali, but now we know. If AirHauler ever sends us to either one with a load of baby toys, we'll be able to find our way around the place without difficulty now. I'm not sure how I could have gotten 1,800 airports into this project and not have Flagler Co in the mix, but I did - corrected now. It's fairly nearby - maybe 80 miles almost straight east of us here in Ocala. If you're not familiar with it, there's a little surprise down in the SW corner that you don't run into at too many FS airports - a water runway, in addition to the four (two closed) hard surface runways. I ran into a pavement anomaly at the Columbian airport, SKPC today, and with a little help from my friends, managed to figure out how to fix it. I've documented the fix in quick and dirty how-to thread at MH in the Scenery / Environment sub-forum. Have a look if you care to... http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/9871-fixing-a-common-pavement-anomaly-using-ade/ LPAZ, Santa Maria, in the Azores, came from the military airfields list today, even though FSX doesn't seem to know anything about that. In real life, it may well be a mixed use field with a military presence, but I can't find any reference to that. It came in a little too late last night to include in that batch so goes to the head of the list today. March has started an AirHauler operation in the Pacific Northwest, so has a strong interest in airports in British Columbia and in Washington state. He's going to begin diagramming some of the Washington airports he frequents with AirHauler. That's a popular area for AirHauler companies. VGTJ, Tejgaon, in Dhaka, Bangladesh came from the national capitals list but is really the "other" airport there. There's a big international very near this rather small airpatch. That one is already in the collection. 6F4 (sounds vaguely like something Grumman might have built for the US Navy) is Elmdale, in Abilene, Texas. It's just another little local muni that popped up on one of the lists. Today was an update day and LFRC, Maupertus, in Cherbourg, France was the oldest one, from October 2009. Not much changed there from FS9 to FSX but it's updated now. It looks like I'm getting this posted barely in time to wish all of you a Happy St. Patrick's day. Mali seems to be coming up frequently these days. Since I'm pulling airports off four separate, randomized lists, it can't be anything more than random chance. Two of the three today are fair sized airports, GANR in Mali being the exception, but even that at least has a paved runway, a ramp, a tower and a couple of buildings. SBFL in Florianopolis, Brazil has a pair of runways and seems to be a prosperous place in FSX. PGUM is the main international airport in Guam and lives up to it. It has a pair of parallel runways, one over 10,000 feet and decent navaids. That one has a couple of custom buildings and enough taxiways to require a second plate for labeling them. The other major airport on the island is, of course, Anderson AFB. The two new ones are a Skydive field in Xenia OH, with the ICAO code of 7OA7, kind of like Ohio, beginning and ending with the same digit. It has three grass runways and little else. RJCK is in Kushiro Japan and is a little more full-featured than the Ohio Skydive patch. It has only one runway, but it's over 8,000' long and has a tower, a Cat. III ILS and a few other published approaches, good navaids and a complex terminal building, but doesn't seem to have any jetways. It had enough taxiway labeling to need a second plate for that. Every time I do an update I feel cheated out of doing a new one instead. My head knows that to maintain the quality I must do the updates at some rate, but my heart wants to just do more new ones. LLNV is Nevatim Air Base in Israel. Though it has runways and taxiways and a couple of approach frequencies, there are no buildings shown, no approaches (at least none published) and seems just a skeleton of an airfield. it puts me in mind of military fields in FS9 before adding the JF Military Plus Paks to their Traffic 2005 package. LUKK was another of those places I had to look up to see where it belonged - Europe in this case, though about as far east in eastern Europe as it's possible to go. I guess Ukraine is considered Europe as well, but both are pretty far to the east. LUKK has a big runway, almost 12,000 feet. There were a handful of custom buildings and an ILS to each end of the runway. Oddly, those are not reflected in the list of approaches. KHFY is Greenwood Mun, lying pretty close to the big airport at Indianapolis IN. It's a small municipal field, less than 5'000 and only one runway. All the buildings look to be T-Hangars. it does sport a pretty good sized handful of approaches, however, no doubt helping the controllers over at KIND keep things shipshape and orderly. Other things have claimed my time and energy. Fortunately, Quickmarch is in there pitching and I have four for you from him. They are all in Canada and include his first 2-plate airport, CYYJ, Victoria Intl, which he managed as if he's been doing them forever. QM's comments for CYYJ follow... "It is the second largest airport in this little province (seeing as it is the second largest flat spot in the province - actually, it's probably the largest that isn't man-made). I'll give that one a spin. BTW, CYYJ has a major error in FSX. The ILS is offset to the right of 27 and the left of 09. There is a fix out there. I think I got it from Avsim. It is called: cyyj_ils_fix.zip. It works a treat." The two Bellas (or is that four?) are actually two of three at that location. There's another, CYBD, that was already in the collection from about nine months ago. This is actually the second batch of the day, though the ones I sent/posted this morning represented catch-up from the prior day or two and all those were done by Quickmarch - these are mine. Anyway, I managed to do four plus an update today, which is a better than average day. I got another surprise this morning when doing OERY, Riyadh Air Base, in Saudi Arabia. As with Kuwait a week or two ago, it was raining there. I didn't know there was a monsoon season in the Arabian Peninsula, but it's starting to look that way. REX seemed to think it was pouring in Riyadh. The last two new ones, KBJC and CO07, both in Colorado, are from a new request list that I'll be working from for the next few days. You can expect to see an assortment of Colorado airports forthcoming until I'm done with that list. The update is Little Gransden in the UK. Take heart - there are only two more on the list, which I should be able to finish tomorrow. Of these in today's batch, only 1CO7 would not have made the cut on its own merits, but got in by way of being a request. Most of these are in pretty challenging terrain and at elevations that are going to make performance something of an issue. If you like mountain flying these just might blow your dress up. An update was due so Nottingham, in the UK, got the nod for that, being the oldest file in the collection. Aspen (KASE) and Leadville (KLXV) are both pretty decent sized airports. Aspen makes most everyone's list of the most difficult airports, at least in the US. It lies at a pretty high altitude and has a great mountain at one end. Approaches are into a valley from one end only and departures go out by the same route in the opposite direction. If you've never tried the ILS into Aspen you owe it to yourself to have the experience and in particular, to fly the missed approach. It uses an off-airport Localizer sited on top of a mountain nearby. If you go missed you climb straight ahead on the runway heading to a prescribed altitude, make a climbing right turn to intercept a back-course radial off the mountain-top localizer and fly the back-course out the escape hatch, up the valley that's one-over from the one the airport is in. It's a hoot in daylight and clear WX, but I'll guarantee the pucker meter will be deep in the yellow if you don't have the visibility to see the rocks. Try it - you'll like it. Both his are in Canada, CAM5 and CAJ4. My lists produced one in Canada today too, CJQ4, so three of today's five are in the Great White North. From the national capitals list we have Luanda, Angola today. The last one is ENVA, Vaernes Air Base, in Trondheim, Norway. That one was big enough to require landscape format and a second plate. Trondheim is near where Tirpitz was finally sunk by the RAF in WWII. Quickmarch mailed in three more in British Columbia and I managed one new and one update today. The new one is Price Sultan Air Base in Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia. It's a substantial looking place but for some reason it's devoid of buildings in FSX, except the control tower. It did, however, have enough taxiways to need a second plate, so it's a zipped file. The update today was Wellesbourne Mountford in the UK, a small airport with a pair of paved runways and a fuel pump. Updates are working from airports originally done in October 2009. allardjd 1,853
3/31/13 Airport Diagrams New: ESSA Arlanda - Stockholm, Sweden - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2081-essa/ CYLC Kimmirut - Kimmirut, Northwest Territories - Canada - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2082-cylc/ CFG4 Debolt - Debolt, Alberta - Canada - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2083-cfg4/ Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,843; downloads 2,325; subscribers 13 The main item in this batch today is ESSA, Arlanda, the main International airport serving Stockholm, Sweden. This turned out to be a four-plater and a 2-day job. I did not take yesterday off - I worked hard on ESSA but couldn't finish it in a day (OK, I did other things too). There were two issues affecting this airport that made it difficult. Microsoft chose to use NO stock buildings for the airport - every building was a custom one and had to be laboriously brought into the image from top-down FSX screenshots. There were a lot of buildings and it took nine screenshots to get them all. The other factor is a fairly dense taxiway network tying together the three runways and several ramp areas. Those required chopping the airport image into three pieces, essentially one centered around each runway, permitting me to blow them up far enough to legibly label the taxiways. An airport with a big footprint can't be zoomed up much unless it's first sliced and diced. I'm not sure what it is about taxiway labeling but it seems pretty universal that whoever does it seems to set aside logic. Often the naming scheme makes no sense at all; other times you can see the beginnings of a system there and at some point the wheels just fall off it. The ones that really drive me nuts are those that use three or four-character taxiway designators - that's just wrong. The other two airports today are both from the wilds of Canada, and oddly enough these are not from Quickmarch. The luck of the draw caused them to fall out of my lists that way today so there we are - two from Canada and one from Sweden. Enjoy 'em.
