dodgy-alan 1,587
Today the last BAC 1-11 flying in the UK flew into retirement at Newquay aircraft museum. Glad she was flown there and not taken apart and driven! http://globalaviationresource.com/v2/2013/04/26/news-last-uk-bac-1-11-flight-as-zh763-arrives-in-cornwall/ You may find some great VCR of the flight on BBC I-player later on today. mutley 4,498
The one I remember is BA flight 5390 from Birmingham to Malaga that had an unplanned stop at Southampton because the windshield failed and half sucked the captain Tim Lancaster out of the cockpit, incredibly he only suffered a fractured arm, bruising, shock and frostbite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_5390

hurricanemk1c 195
Can't remember them in passenger service, but have seen the one at Duxford - beautiful aircraft, at least DM has made an excellent model
dodgy-alan 1,587
The DM one is an excellent model, as is his Comet, VC-10 and Trident. really accurate and great(LOUD) sounds ! I've got the lot in my fleet. The Trident has a superb Autoland system that I only managed to figure out once but not used it since. I really must revisit that one sometime! dodgy-alan 1,587
The BAC 1-11 had the nickname of Bus-Stop Jet at one time due to their propensity on the holiday traffic runs where they landed all over the place, Laker,Court Line, BKS, BEA etc ( A bit like Easy Jet but with realistic landing destinations!) Dan Air used it's short field performance to good effect on the Scottish Island routes. This performance plus it's excellent rough field handling was a reason it sold well in South America and a lot of third world carriers. The last aircraft were built in Romania by RomBac and were fitted with the latest hush kits. There were proposals to retro fit the aircraft with newer cleaner and quieter engines but it was found to be too expensive, especially as the same market was by then being addressed by newer aircraft. There are still some flying in Africa and South America as far as I know but in Europe and the USA they no longer meet noise and pollution regulations.
