Swedish Dakota

Recommended Posts

Ever heard of the Catalina Affair?

It involved two Swedish Aircraft that were shot down by Russian Migs, A Dakota and a Catalina.

What happened to the Dakota was only discovered much later, but the wreck was found and is currently on display i the Swedish Air Force museum, which I recently visited.

It is a very impressive display, so if you are ever near Linkoping...

This is what it looks like now:

Sad affair for sure. Nice of you to bring it back to life. :thum:

I notice when you paint Swedish aircraft they have just the simple roundel (I think it's called) but not unit or squadron insignias. I do notice that the earlier planes did have some stripes on the tails but not the later ones. Would you happen to know why.

It all depends on the model and version you want to paint.

Swedish aircraft usually have very understated squadron codes, often limited to a single number for the squadron and a letter for the individual aircraft within the squadron.

Here's an example:

16 is the squadron code, the yellow K is the code letter within F16 squadron and the little 26158 is the Swedish Air Force serial (26 for the Mustang, 158 the serial), other markings were usually only there for certain excercises.

The Dakota had SAF serial starting with 79, and often squadron codes as well:

8 means F8 squadron, 72 is the aircraft number, barely visible is the 79*** serial, The badge on the nose is of F8 squadron, and you also see the orange stripes often worn by search and rescue aircraft. Other aircraft had no badge or stripes

The one I painted was used for secretive ELINT missions and carried, as far as I have been able to ascertain, no markings apart from the roundels, which are clearly visible on the wreck, So left all other markings off. Bit simple for a paint perhaps, but more or less accurate I think. .
