The first is KPIH, in Pocatello ID, and is oddly shaped. It's a half square, split on the diagonal by a runway and a huge (former military?) ramp. It has a runway on one of the remaining sides and what must be about a 7,000' taxiway along the other. It's towered and has a full GPS and an LOM at one end of the hypotenuse runway. LLEK was another head-scratcher while I was doing the graphics work. I'm a full ten minutes into one of these before getting to the screen with the text data so unless the airport name, the ICAO or at least the first two letters, are familiar, I don't have a clue where the place is. So it was with this one, since I couldn't dredge up from memory that LL was Israel. This may be an air base, but it's not titled as such and didn't come from that list. It does have some of the characteristics of them, however, though that's just a guess. It has three runways, two of which are parallel, and a lot of taxiways, unlabeled. There is exactly one building, no tower or fuel pump, no approaches and the only radio channels published are labeled "Approach". The ramp is tiny, about the same size as the building. 7L8 is Post-Air, in Indianapolis IN. It's a single paved strip, with a small ramp and a few buildings off to one side. There's a long displaced threshold at one end, suggesting an occluded approach path of some kind. It is lighted but is non-towered and has no approaches. All in all it's kind of a poorly equipped place for being in a big city. They both came from the same list, which has been randomized, so it's just random chance, the luck of the draw. I've got a couple of new projects going, so in an effort to save myself some time I am going to try backing off a little on the narrative on these airports as I publish the diagrams. Of the group today, two, ETNW, the German air base, and Merrill, in Anchorage Alaska both needed two plates. ETNW has an oddity on the map. It's ILS feather is all tangled up with two others from a different airport, to the extent that Runway 26 at ETNW shares a LOM (I guess that's double-co-located) with one of the ILSs for the other field. This doesn't sound like a particularly good place to be either a pilot or an air traffic controller in bad weather. YCUA came from a traffic list, so is big enough that someone thought it needed traffic, even though the runway is dirt. It does have some other features and is not just a bare strip. LPST from the military airfields list. The third one would have been from the sequestered airports list but instead I received a request for one airport diagram, KSEZ, in Sedona AZ. His question was timely - I still had not started on the third airport so it was not a stretch to work it in the same day. The runway table shows ILS data but the mini-table notes no Glide Path, so it's a non-precision approach. OK, so far but in the approach list, it's listed, not as "LOC" but "LDA". That, of course is a Localizer-type Directional Aid. Those are used when terrain or other factors require that the Localizer beam is not aligned with the runway. They're great fun, requiring a last minute dog-leg to get lined up. Also on the approach list for RCYU are no less than four circling approaches of various kinds. This must be a really fun place to get into when the WX is at minimums, leading to all kinds of stories beginning with, "There I was..." 5J5 is in Holly Hill NC; it is a grass strip but has a small dirt apron hard against one edge of the runway, is lighted and has a couple of buildings. It came from a traffic list, so one of the payware programs sends some traffic there. The update today, EHHV Hilversum in the Netherlands, consists of three crossing grass runways in a triangular arrangement, and a fuel pump. I've attended a couple of airshows at KBTL, Battle Creek. At that time it was a mixed use field with a Michigan ANG unit flying A-10s based there, though if memory serves that's either been closed or they are flying different AC these days. I had the opportunity to see the GUN, outside the A-10, removed and placed on a series of wooden pallets. It has to be seen for the size to be appreciated. As I understand it, Fairchild almost literally assembled the airplane around the gun. The other base, KNGU, the huge Norfolk Naval Station, has (had?) an integral airfield. As a sailor I would often watch aircraft approaching the field from the west, while my ship was at the Destroyer and Submarine Piers. As I recall, the most common type seen was the Grumman A-6 Intruder, an all-weather flying dump-truck that was pretty much the premier tactical air-ground platform of those days. It's still a favorite, but alas, most of them are now serving as an artificial reef off St. Augustine FL. All four are US airports. I keep noting improbable coincidences when doing these. Today's is selecting three new airports by random chance from three different lists comprising almost 30,000 lines of text (1 airport per line) and getting two from cities named "Lancaster", one in Pennsylvania and one in California. To be fair there are twelve airports in FSX with city names of Lancaster and eight discrete cities by than name, but it still seems like a remarkable coincidence. One of these days when something like that happens I'm going to run out and buy a lottery ticket. I should only need one. KMGE in Marietta GA, just north of Atlanta, is noteworthy by having a 300' wide runway. It's adjacent to Lockheed's historic Plant #6 and has seen aircraft continuously produced for the USAF since WWII, including the C5 Galaxy. C-130s of the more modern type are still produced there, as is the Joint Strike Fighter (F-35). All the F-22 Raptors were built there, but that line is now closed with roughly 190 produced - all there will ever be. The update, KOAK, Oakland Intl was a handful. It's one of those large-footprint airports that are difficult to diagram acceptably and I was expecting to have to use third plate to get all the text data in. As luck would have it, I managed to squeeze it all in without ruining it entirely even though I had to get pretty tricky with the Approach list. If there had been one more navaid to include I wouldn't have made it. I've driven across Wisconsin a number of times - you see one tree, you've seen them all. Anyway, it's a pretty full-featured, medium sized airport. Who knew? I don't know where to start on LFMI. Let's begin with the name. Le Tube Air Base? Le Tube? According to the Wiki article, the name was conferred upon it while it was being used by the Americans late in WWII. I'll bet there's a story lurking there, but nobody's talking. Turning to the runways, there are four of them, one closed. They are parallel and very close together. One is seriously longer than the others and is obviously intended to be the main strip. I'm reasonably sure the others must pre-date that one, since it's over 12,000' long and the next longest is less than half that. The smallest is about 3,200' X 66', and that's not the one that's closed. The three non-principal runways lie cheek by jowl next to the main one and the runway numbering appears more likely to have been done by a descendant of Freud than of Descartes. I won't even try to describe it - just have a look at the diagram and see if you can see any logic in it. It's a good thing they are all parallel - there's no telling what they'd have done otherwise. Finally, the taxiway designations drew my attention. What's there is somewhat logical though I don't much like three-character taxiway designators - they're too hard to fit in, usually. Anyway, after Dien Bien Phu, I'm pretty sure I'd have opted for something other than "VC" in any format if I were the French. Of course they left other taxiways, some of which seem pretty important, entirely unlabeled, missing the opportunity to use "SS", "RN" and the initials of other outfits they have faced in battle.
