You may have noticed I took the day off yesterday. Too much to do and not enough day. Today was similar but I managed to get them squeezed in - even an update. The update, 0A8 in Centreville AL, was an easy one.

KSFF, in Spokane WA has three runways, one a water runway. You don't run into that too often.

EYKT Aalborg in Denmark is from the military airfields list, but FS does not have it designated as such.

Three new ones today, all foreign, unless you view California differently than I do.

I'm light on the narrative tonight because I spent the time on my parallel project, getting another set of new waypoints entered and posted at the MH File Library. There are 1,271 new waypoints added now.

I offer the usual three plus one today, this being an update day. SAWE is the odd man out today - we don't see too many from Argentina and not all that many from anywhere in South America. Fewer than 10% of all the diagrams are in the South/Central America area, and that includes all the islands as well.

All four of these today were pretty easy single runway airports of varying complexity. Most had a custom building or two but that's gotten to be a matter of routine since discovering Inkscape. KSUN had a bunch of short taxiways with 2-digit designators, all between the runway and the parallel taxiways. That forced the second plate because I needed a larger image to get the labels in properly. But for that, KSUN would have been a one-plater too.

I am constrained on the first plate to a certain image size because of image quality. I make the source image as large as possible in the source application and screen shot it, pasting that into the first plate of the diagram. I've found from experience that if I try to expand it once it's pasted in, there's a serious loss of quality and the airport image gets pretty fuzzy. That's acceptable on the second and subsequent plates where I'm only labeling taxiways so in some cases I do expand the image there. For the first plate, however, I keep the image at the imported size, whatever that is, to retain sharpness and a crisp image. If you need more detail I suggest zooming the plate in whatever application you use as a viewer.

There seem to be a lot of military fields popping up, even from the other lists. One of the four lists I'm using is exclusively air bases so one in four will be anyway, but I'm getting more than that, it seems. No problem, I guess. They're airfields, they're in FS and many of them are now mixed use fields anyway, sharing the turf with civil operations too.

OKAJ in Kuwait is pretty sparse, just two large parallel runways (slightly different in width) and a control tower. Visually there's not much else there. They should open a deli, considering all the sand-which-is there. OK - I admit it - that was a groaner, but it's late and I'm a little dopey tonight. Processing new waypoints will do that to you.

Not sure how I keep coming up with large airfields in the UK. Though I've never deliberately scrubbed through a list of airports there, I had the idea that I'd already done most of the good-sized ones. EGUB came as a surprise today - I was expecting a grass strip.

I took a day off airport diagrams yesterday with another chore looming. I'm on the hook for a presentation at the local flight sim club meeting tomorrow and spent a good part of yesterday getting ready for it.

Today's group is a full batch of three plus an update. All four are, as you can see above, in the US.

Tinker AFB, KTIK, in Oklahoma City is a big one with a lot going on. I had to go to two columns for the radio frequency list but did manage to keep the airport on one plate. By way of warning, two of the four ILSs listed there are Localizer-only.

KEHR in Henderson KY and the update, KGKJ (a thoroughly forgettable ICAO code) Port Meadville PA, are both relatively small fields and weren't much of a challenge. Except, that is, for trying to remember the KGKJ ICAO code. I must have had to look it up a half dozen times, most recently when composing this.

KGON in Groton/New London CT was quite a bit more complex. Though it's nothing to do with the airport, I can't avoid mentioning that Groton/New London is the home of the US Navy's submarine force and also where the famous General Dynamics Electric Boat division has most of their facilities.

I made a small change in the charts, beginning today and will continue to incorporate it going forward. It's subtle - can anyone spot it? It's on all four of today's and will be on all of them from now on.

By way of warning, beginning in a little over a week I'll be travelling for almost two weeks. I'm going to make a concerted effort to see if I can get the laptop configured to be able to remain productive on both airport diagrams and waypoints but am not sure the old horse is up to it. If I can, I will. If not, there may be a two-week pause in the production of airport diagrams.

I only seem to be able to manage a batch every other day lately. Will try to do better. As someone said to me yesterday, "It's just a hobby."

Two of the three tonight are in California, even though they came from different lists. One of them, KBFL in Bakersfield got the two-plate treatment.

The odd man out is SBBV, Boa Vista, in Brazil. As near as I can make it out the name translates roughly to "Look at the size of that snake". Well, maybe not exactly that, but the place is at a latitude of about 3 degrees north and shares a name with a big one, so I only embellish a little here.

I managed to crank out a full batch today, including an updated of the oldest, KDAN in Danville VA. I stayed up pretty late doing it, but won out in the end.

Two of the new ones required two plates and I think every one had at least one custom building to import. Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you.

KLUK, Lunken in Cincinnati, makes the list of unfortunate ICAO codes. I believe this airport is the usta-was main airport for Cincinnati but has been pretty much superseded by KCVG, just across the river in northern Kentucky. I'm pretty sure I've travelled through this one as a passenger many moons ago.

OETB in Saudi Arabia is one of those high, wide and deep airport layouts that doesn't diagram well. The place covers such a large swath of real estate that there's not much detail in the image. For what we use these diagrams for it's probably fine, but it's not pretty.

I made a milestone today - 2,400 airports diagrammed.

EKKA and KBAZ are both fairly full featured. The Danish one in particular is a runway-rich environment with five, four of which are paved and none are closed that I could tell. The other one, SKGB in Colombia, is a military field and only shows a paved runway and a control tower. There are no other physical features in FSX. I'm glad that one wasn't the 2,400th - KBAZ seems more worthy.

I first want to express thanks and good wishes to all veterans who read this. I should have included it yesterday since these almost always go out after midnight, but late is better than never.

With travel impending and a lot to do, I only managed one new diagram and one update today. This might be a sparse week. I'm trying to pull together the software resources on my laptop so I can do at least some of these while out of town - not sure if that's going to come together or not. If not, there will be a dry spell of about two weeks.

The new one is another candidate for the unfortunate ICAO code list - KBUM, in Butler MO. It's a smallish, one-runway municipal, non-towered.

The update is KCUB, the smaller, downtown airport in Columbia, SC. Don't be fooled by the ILS - it's another of those Localizer-only setups with no GS. It's similar in size to KBUM, above - maybe a little bigger with more buildings, but otherwise more or less the same.

I'm not resting on my laurels here - the list gods coughed up Edwards AFB next and have been working on it for two nights.  This will require some entirely new methods to document properly.

I wasn't able to finish the work on Edwards AFB before my trip so that one remains unfinished and won't be posted until sometime after 12/2.

I did manage to get all the necessary software tools installed on the laptop and have been able to produce a couple of diagrams tonight. Doing them on this machine is more difficult and considerably slower, lacking dual screens and considerably less hardware firepower, but it seems they can be done. I'll attempt to keep them coming while I'm away from the home base but will have to stop short of promising three a day. I'm also going to suspend updates until I'm back on the home hardware.

Finally, any of the subscribers reading this, I do not have the address list with me and cannot e-mail these. I'll catch all of you up after 12/2.

I was only able to complete on airport diagram tonight. I'm encountering problems with the small screen size and relatively poor resolution of the computer I'm using, particularly in getting the airport image from the airport editor to the graphics editor. Much depends on screenshots and they have to be used in the original size - zooming makes them fuzzy.

I had to jump through some pretty intricate hoops tonight to get an acceptably large and sharp image of the airport to work with.

I'll keep plugging away on them with this hardware but the production rate is going to be way down from what I usually manage.

I'm using an actual superscripted degree mark in the latitude, longitude, magnetic variation and navaid bearings, vs. the former "*" or "deg.". It's a trick that I recently discovered my text processor (Notepad++) is capable of.

After whining about how hard these are to do on the laptop, I managed to get five of them done today. I've been able to refine the method a little and it's getting easier though I sure will be happy to get back to the home PC.

I received a request list today, 16 airports and a few more promised. Of those, seven were already in the collection and these five make 12 of 16 done. I guess receiving the list must have energized me a little to keep pounding away on these despite the difficulty.

All three of these tonight were fairly easy single-runway airports, so went relatively fast even on the laptop.

This finishes the current request list, though I'm promised four more from the same source - don't have those yet but they will go to the head of the line when I get them.

I'm continuing to plug away on the laptop and the new method for getting a fair screenshot at

a sufficient level of detail seems to be working OK. I may even be able to apply it on the home unit in certain situations. It works best with airports whose image is oriented more or less N-S.

Am still not doing any updates on this hardware - those will remain suspended until I return home.

I only managed to produce one tonight. This is from the military airfields list, but there's no indication of that in the MS data, including no DME on the field, which is a fairly reliable indicator of a military airport. Beware the ILS, it's Localizer-only.

I did a little better tonight - two new, both in the US. KCEF, Westover ARB/Metro, is the former Westover AFB, so has a really large runway, about 11,500 X 300. That one ended up with a lot of taxiway labels and looks kind of cluttered. It should have been a 2-plater, I guess, but it is legible. When I made the 1-plate/2-plate decision I overlooked all the closed taxiways that had to be labeled too.

Two more tonight, from freezing Colorado Springs. I'm ready to get back to warm weather and a near sea level elevation. Life at 7,000' + is kind of hard on geezers.

The first airport on the list tonight is CZRJ, Round Lake, in Ontario. It's a gravel strip with a ramp and a building or two.

The other is a German Air Base, ETAD. There's nothing much remarkable about either.

I'm still expecting four more airports from the partially complete request list, but don't have them yet. These are from the normal lists.

John
