hlminx 301
Hi there OK, I'm biting! The half price offer on REX Xtreme with Overdrive has caught my attention.. problem is that it requires a minimum of 30GB of hard drive space. 30 GIGABYTES !! My set up is as follows: C Drive = 128GB SSD which has the OS, my docs, FSX routes etc. There is currently about 50GB of space left D Drive = 256GB SSD which has FSX all my scenery add ons and aircraft (currently) E Drive = 1TB HD which has my image backup for my PC and will soon have some of my aircraft on (I'm going to 'Move' them from the D drive to a 'hangar' which I have set up) F Drive - 160GB HD with not a lot on it but its slower than molasses So.. long story short. I know that you can't use up all the space on an SSD drive so I can't really put it on my C drive. The D drive is a possibility but I still have a ton of AC add ons which I haven't loaded yet (my PMDG stuff and a load of Captain Sim). Not sure how much space I will have on there when I'm done. Last option is either the 1TB drive or my 4th HD drive which is only 160GB but is free even if it is slow. Question: Can I save REX Xtreme anywhere on my PC or does it have to be on my C or D ? If I can put it on the E drive then I 'm sorely tempted to buy it at the knock-down price of £14.07 but if I cant, then I might just leave it. Any advise ? I'm guessing that it probably doesn't matter where it gets saved if it still knows where FSX is, but I've fought long and hard for a system which is screamingly fast, and I don't want to compromise on the speed of my PC just for some pretty clouds and some gorgeous water textures that make me want to dive right in. Any thoughts guys ?? Steph
UKJim 502
I only use opus for weather engine so I install the texture programmes and then install my textures - then I uninstall the application like Rex or Fex or Active sky. This saves on space but makes it difficult to change the textures any time soon. I then backup the installation programme on my storage hard drive ready for next time. Good luck
hlminx 301
Hi Jim Thanks for the pointer. So it sounds like the program can just be used to set up specific textures and then once they are generated and saved, the program isn't accessed again.. If that's the case then it doesn't need to constantly run in the background so it could go on one of the other slower drives... I'm not planning on using anything else like Opus or Active Sky here.. Am I right or missing something else ? Thanks Steph Ps. anyone know when the 1/2 price offer ends so I know how many evenings I have to work things out ?
UKJim 502
Well if you are going to use the weather engine in rex then you will not be able to uninstall it but if you are not going to use the weather engine I believe you can simply install the textures and uninstall. I use FEX for textures then Opus to load the real world weather into the sim.
jaydor 345
Yes you can use the E drive and you can leave it there when you install. It will find your FSX on installation and use the E drive when in FSX. I use a separate drive for all my photo scenery, as long as FSX knows where to look which the install will tell it, you can place a lot on separate drives. I think aircraft are the ones that have to go on the FSX drive..
britfrog 180
you can put it where yopu want in your case the E drive looks best, however during the installation it will ask where the program is , make sure you tell it correctly because if you dont when you go through the various menus you will not see the textures menu so you will have to uninstall the last part and re install it. brett 2,315
I never noticed any drop in speed using REX and I do like to fly with actual day to day weather. The only slowdown is waiting for REX to load before allowing it to start FSX(about 15-30seconds for me) and sometimes FSX may take longer to load. Not sure why this is, sometimes both are really slow to load and other times they both load really fast, usually doing a restart of my computer helps make things run better before my flights and is worth the time it takes. hlminx 301
Thanks everyone for the advice.. looks like I might have to pull out the Visa card after all I think aircraft are the ones that have to go on the FSX drive.. Ah... now, let me tell you a useful tip .. you have to install aircraft onto the same drive as FSX, but then you can move them where you want. All you do is set up a separate folder on another drive (I use my 1TB) and then you 'move' the aircraft files from the Sim Objects folder then FSX remembers where you moved them. You need to make sure that you move the folder and not copy it or it doesn't work. If you want t delete the aircraft you do the same thing in reverse.. move it back across to the Sim Objects folder. and then delete it or uninstall if its one with a separate uninstaller. As the aircraft loads up when you start FSX (as far as I understand it), it doesn't matter if you store all the aircraft on slower drives. Steph
