I fly using FSinn on vatsim.  As we are aware there is a weather bug in FSinn above FL240 or thereabouts.  So, on higher altitude flights I use MSFX real world weather and through the FSinn control panel select CAVOK and this solves the bug issue.

 

However I am considering using Active Sky next. I am assuming that ASN somehow eradicates this issue within FSinn? 

 

My confusion comes also with setting the QNH.  I assume that if I am not using Vatsims weather, I use the QNH set by MSFX?  When using ASN would I revert back to the local QNH as directed by VATSIM?

 

FYI I have searched on AVSIM but there are so many conflicting answers, hence my confusion.

I made the choice of installing the trial version if ASN but sadly whilst it loaded and all was fine, repeatedly crashed fsx.  This is due to having a not such great processor etc.

I have no idea about issues with upper flight levels - I get a nose bleed above FL100, so never go there

 

Meanwhile, down among the clouds and weather... What you set in the sim is the QNH reported by whatever weather generation system you are using (obviously if you're up in the flight levels, you won't be using QNH by definition, since they are referenced to 1013). If you're using Active Sky, it comes from Active Sky. If you're using Vatsim weather, it comes from Vatsim. The important thing is - you use the sim's weather, since that determines whether you fly over a mountain or into it.

 

As far as Vatsim is concerned, you just read back the QNH they give you. If you are using Vatsim weather, then set it in your altimeter, if you're using something else, don't (hit the B key or do whatever else you need to adjust it). Vatsim is only really concerned with the read back, since it's an ATC system. If you want, you can always add a note to your flight plan saying that you're using different weather (this can affect certain aspects of the ATC, for instance if you declare that you're set to night, or bad weather or CAVOK, you may be given different instructions)

I used to use  fsinn but it had quite a few issues so I changed to sqauwkbox , with no issues , plus it is much easier to use.

as for qnh setting vatsim and whatever weather prog you are using should all give the same qnh if they are up to date, as they ,mostly all use the same source of airfield weather info

Thanks chaps. I actually get on really well with fsinn and I the weather bug is a pain but a manageable one.

Thanks for clarifying the qnh based on what weather engine you used. Makes perfect sense as you explained it. Shame my pc doesn't cope with ASN......
