air to air refuelling kc135

Recommended Posts

ever since we moved to this house 3 years ago i have heard these guys ,and seen them on radar sites on the net, but only occasionally seen them with my eyes,if you have clear skies you cant see them, if it is cloudy , they are normally above the clouds, but on the odd occasion you do get to see them and today was one and i had my camera to hand. I apologise that you have to zoom in on the photos but I only have a 200mm lens and they were at 23,000 feet in the first pick you can see the kc135 turning overhead my house being chased by two mirages on the left, in the second pass they are close behind but not hooked up, like wise the 3rd but then with another roar they were joined by two more who formated on the tanker as they disappeared, i also enclose a pic of the race track that they always use

Pretty interesting, particularly the track. I had a look, trying to figure out what the nav fix for the racetrack might be. It looks like the NDB CVU, NW of Castres might be right at the top of the western straight leg. Of course it might just as well be done by GPS to a waypoint without reference to a ground station.

Great post, even if the photos are rough. You did well to get them at all at that height.

didnt think of that James, next time i will paint a message on the roof

I was wondering the same thing Jiohn however the military rarely use civilan navaids it may well be a loran waypoint the only civilian aid they flew over was CS (345) (carcassonne) however there is a military base NNW of Carcassonne called Moussoulens which using google looks disused, however maybe there is something there?

Maybe TACAN - those show up in FSX as DME-only navaids, i.e. a square box but I don't think all of them are in FSX. Those provide both distance and bearing to military aircraft with a TACAN receiver, but only distance to a typical civilian VOR receiver.
