ddavid 149
I've always wanted to go to Everest after reading about Ed Hilary and Tenzing's fantastic feat in 1953 - my boyhood heroes! Anyway, I found some Everest scenery on AVSIM recently and decided to re-fly the 1932 fly-past organised with the aid of the RAF. Unfortunately, the Westland Wagtail (the nearest I could get to the A/Cs used in the original flight) is seriously under-powered - as you will see! Here we are setting of from Purnea: Making a turn to port to fly north: The Himalayas, and the Everest group, in sight: That's the moon rising over Kanjenjunga (I think): The Everest Massif takes shape ahead; Passing Makalu: Over the Kanshung glacier, east of Everest - we're aiming to get over the South Col, ahead: That's Lohtse's north face: Close up of Everest's Kanchung face - we didn't make the south Col!! Flying around the north east Ridge: And over the North Col: Passing the Great Couloir on Everest's immense West Face: Over the West Ridge: And that's the Western Cwm: The fluted face of Lhotse: Heading south, away from Everest: The left hand valley leads to Lukla - I hope! Downwind leg over Lukla: Touch down - yes! Hope you enjoyed that 'flight of fantasy'! A/C and scenery from AVSIM, as usual. Cheers - Dai.
