J G 927
I am thinking of buying Steves DX10 fixer I have read the review done by Brian and my system seems to tick the right boxes for it. However, the review seems to have been done when the software was freeware. Version 2.17 is now available as £20, and we are a year down the road, and a good few versions, from the reviewed version. So my questions are: - is it worth the £20? just how much of a performance gain is there? J
UKJim 502
I think it depends - I have recently (yesterday) tweaked my system for dx10 and for me it is definitely more stable and I am able to crank the graphics up slightly too. I have an old dinosaur machine so anything is a benefit for me. I also use photoscenery and with some of the tweaks and settings - the DX10 option made my scenery have less blurries (almost all gone) which was not possible in DX9 - trust me I tried every trick in the book. So the answer to your question is it depends - but I would also second the review and I paid for my version too. Worth the money - Yes IMO! Do you have an AMD or Nvidia card? britfrog 180
going to dx10 with steves fixer is a no brainer, once you have done it you will wonder why you didnt do it a year ago. it will not affect greatly the fps you get in fsx but what it does do is allow the GPU to run the graphics without it going through the cpu so you immediately get a far smaller chance of a crash as it allows fsx to retain more VAS for its own use. steves shaders fill in the blanks and correct some things that were not finished properly by the m.s. team when they were creating DX10. when i first stated using dx10 2 years or more ago I used to go back occasionally to see where the differences are, but i havent done that for ages as fsx with dx10 is so solid, in fact it is far more solid than P3D IMHO at the moment, yes i know they are still working on P£D so the future will be in that direction but i much prefer fsx in dx10 than P3D
UKJim 502
I was thinking of switching over to P3D but did not know if I would get a performance benefit or not - and also if my machine was capable. There is no real definition to computer specifications for FSX/P3D realistically, because it all depends on addons and the how much resource they hog. So on it's own I would run it smoothly but with addons - how much of an impact is that. Also I do not know how many of my addons work in P3D without re-purchasing them. This put me off too because I have spent a lot of cash on those addons and would not want to lose them. Cannot re-sell because they are downloadable purchases not DVD versions. So in the end I thought I would give DX10 a whirl and glad I did - plus I enjoy tinkering with things like this so it was fun too.

I am now not going to bother updating p3d again until either I upgrade my p.c. or they release the 64bit version yes there are a few interesting little things in p3d that we dont have in fsx with dx10 but the problems , for me , far outweigh the small benefits, i rather have a stable system that I know i can fly for any length of time to any kind of complex airport, and complete the flight without a crash or lack of memory warnings. None taken mate - it's exactly the point I was making - I didn't know how p3d would be on my dinosaur box - had an feeling it would be piss poor so thanks for confirming that More than pleased with my dx10 setup - I had dx9 going well but it's better now. It's a shame a company cannot create a new flight sim like FSX but uses today's technology out the box. Ah well dreaming! Lol
