MartinW 0
What's this guy up to at 2:34 on?
Gunner 69
Now you see me, now you don't...wanna play?
MartinW 0
looks like he's just messing about then? Dodgy for an F-35B to manoeuvre like that, so close to a tanker. Lack of professionalism then maybe? Somehow I doubt that's the case. I wonder if it's a test to see how stable an F-35B is that close to a tanker?
J G 927
I does look like the aircraft had an issue with the hole in the air made by the tanker.
MartinW 0
Could be. But the banking manoeuvres look regular and deliberate, rather than due to turbulence from the tanker.
allardjd 1,853
I agree. I had the impression of deliberate maneuvers, not an upset; if unexpected, he'd have immediately pulled the power to drop back away from the Herc and that did not happen. Not sure if it was showboating or a test of stability and controllability in the dirty air behind the tanker but the presence of the other video platforms suggests something other than routine refueling operations was anticipated. MartinW 0
Couldn't see the probe deployed either. So no intention to refuel.
Gunner 69
For me it looks like a photo shooting session...the guy sitting on the ramp is taking pictures. Maybe he was asking for some banked positions.
MartinW 0
May be, good suggestion.
Andrew Godden 943
Maybe I'm just too logical, because I thought a photo shoot was the obvious explanation. Military transport aircraft, such as the C-130, are often used in this role because of the clear view afforded from the cargo ramp, but let's not allow the obvious, and lex parsimoniae (also known as Occam's Razor), get in the way of furtive speculation. J G 927
I suppose the obvious answer staring us in the face is that prior to an actual in flight refuel test It would be wise to practice the procedures for breaking away if something goes wrong. This may be what we are looking at.
