Qantas Jet Lands With Gaping Hole In Fuselage

It was a 747-400 according to the article, over the South China Sea - it landed at Manila. No mention of terrorism in the article. It sounds more like a structural failure leading to a catastrophic airframe fracture, not unlike the Aloha 737 that had the cabin roof come off in flight. It will be interesting to see if that's the conclusion or if there's something more sinister at work here.

This doesn't look like the kind of hole I'd expect from an internal explosion and is probably not terror related. I'd say the forward piece of the wing fairing somehow came adrift and tore off.

Hi John,

We've had quite a bit of news coverage including videos taken by people onboaed.

Apparently it dropped from FL400 to FL250 but the oxygen deployed successfully and they landed safely. Phew!
