mutley 4,498
From the Daily Telegraph For months it had been widely assumed, and not strenuously denied by Clarence House, that at the end of the year the Prince would quit the Household Cavalry to become a full-time working royal. His arrival as a fully paid-up member of The Firm, as it is known within the Royal Household, was already exciting huge media interest. The reaction to the 26-year-old Prince on the public engagements he has carried out, has been wildly enthusiastic. He would inevitably have provoked comparisons with the popularity of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales. So his decision to switch his commission to the to RAF, for a posting which will last for a minimum of five years, was as clever as it was unexpected. His desire for privacy, and dislike of the media exacerbated by the death of his mother, have made the Prince a reluctant young Royal. Blessed with his mother's looks, his father's inquiring mind, his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh's stern strength of character, and more than his fair share of his grandmother's cheerful good sense, he is already the embodiment of a modern myth. But while he has been billed as a future saviour of the Royal Family he is unwilling to play that role full-time just yet. By joining the RAF search and rescue unit he can live up to the expectations of a dashing young Royal carrying out a difficult, often dangerous job. By serving his Queen and country it will also compensate for the disappointment of being unable to go the Afghanistan front line with his regiment , unlike his brother Prince Harry, because he is so close to the throne. The Prince, who now has his own astute media adviser Miguel Head who has come in from the Ministry of Defence, is well aware that his role rescuing people stranded on cliff tops and from stricken boats at sea will generate an endless supply of positive headlines. As for marriage to Kate Middleton the assumption was that an engagement would be announced as and when he joined the Prince of Wales and stepmother the Duchess of Cornwall as full-time members of The Firm. That now is clearly no longer the case. Prince Charles was happy for his son, to extend his military career. Both father and son are anxious to be seen to be supporting the military when it is involved in two extended armed conflicts. Significantly for the Prince of Wales it means that he as heir to the throne, alongside the Queen, will continue to be the focus of the work of the Royal Family rather than his telegenic eldest son. //end of!!
