A search and rescue operation for three missing US marines has reportedly been called off.

The marines went missing off Queensland's coast after a US military plane crashed into the sea.

The plane, an MV-22 Osprey, was carrying 26 personnel including crew when it crashed about 4pm on Saturday off the central Queensland coast at Shoalwater Bay.

It had taken off from the USS Bonhomme Richard and was on regularly scheduled operations when it hit the water in a 'mishap', a statement from the US military says.

Small boats and aircraft from the Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault ship, immediately swung into action.

Twenty-three marines were rescued while three remain missing.

Thankfully so many were rescued! Huge tragedy for families of those lost. /salute for their service.

While still a tragedy, things like this don't always end so well.  Hope none of the survivors are seriously injured.

relief for the survivors but they won't feel it, you always still feel it so hard for people who don't make it, sometimes you have feelings of guilt for just surviving,  thoughts for those lost and for their families .....

Thoughts go to all involved but especially to the families of the guys that didn't make it to safety. A sad day indeed.

Not good, the V-22 has had more than it's fair share of mishaps sadly.
