mutley 4,498
So with the passing of summer in the UK, we pass our minds back to the Around The World Challenge! It has been a long adventure, but then, any ATWC is exactly that. Sector 5 ultimately steers a course to home, but not before enduring the most complex of the Sectors. Continuing on through deepest, darkest Africa, a world journey which takes us to some of the most ancient sites of early civilisations would not be complete if it did not visit some of the major sites representing the Cradle of Humankind, Lanseria, South Africa, Ferguson's Gulf, Kenya, and Combolcha, Ethiopia. Between these destinations, we return to nature and the Natural Wonder, Victoria Falls, and Seronera, Tanzania, the site of the incredible natural phenomenon that is the Great Migration. Finally, we reach Egypt and sites of the ancient Egyptian Empire. After taking in the ancient Luxor Temple and the Valley of the Kings, we next visit the first of the Ancient Wonders, the Great Pyramid of Giza, before moving on to Alexandria, the site of the second of the Ancient Wonders, the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Whilst in Alexandria, we also take the the opportunity to visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a Wonder of the Middle Ages. Next we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra in Jordan before visiting Hillah, Iraq. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is the only Ancient Wonder for which the location has not been definitively established, but is believed to be near present day Hillah. From Hillah we head to the island of Rhodes, Greece, the site of the Ancient Wonder, the Colossus of Rhodes. Next is a short series of hops up to Bodrum and Selcuk, Turkey, sites of the Ancient Wonders, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and Temple of Artemis, respectively. Taking in Istanbul, Turkey, we visit the Hagia Sophia, another of the Wonders of the Middle Ages. The last site of the Ancient Wonders, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, sees us visit Olympia, Greece. Where would a world tour be without a visit to Rome and another of the Wonders of the Middle Ages, the Colosseum, our next stop. Our bucket list of Wonders of the World is nearly complete as we fly over the Swiss Alps and on to the Netherlands and the penultimate Wonder of the Modern World, the Delta and Zuiderzee Works, followed by the last of the Modern World Wonders, the Channel Tunnel at Calais. From here we can nearly smell Southampton, but not before we smell something more sinister, the last Wonder on ATWC 7even, and the last Wonder of the Industrial World, the London Sewerage System. For this, we visit the Crossness Pumping Station. Glad to be leaving the foul stench of sewerage behind, and also glad to be embarking on the final leg of the ATWC 7even, we finally head for home, Southampton. The bidding window for section 5 is now open! Please bid for as many flights you like in order of preference, and as there are so many flights and you would like to be assigned more than one at the ourset, then please let me know in your email. Bids must be sent to atwc@mutleyshangar.com, and we look forward to hearing from you! All the best and be careful out there! Joe
