Question for John or any of my US pals.

Recommended Posts

As John eluded to, it totally depends on who you work for, and what their policies are. Not to mention why they want to send you home. I have worked jobs where you wouldn't get sent home at all, and if you did you got some comp pay, and I have had jobs where they could/would sennd you home without pay at their leisure. Too many variable to give a short answer.

Now that I am self-emploey, I find myself being "sent" home without pay quite regularly. :thum:

If the employee is part-time, i.e. less than 40 hours per week, it is typical that they get few or no benefits and can be sent home at any point without further pay.

Thaks lads.

This was an episode where Vinnie was instructed to be in charge of tidying the shop. He hadn't, so Paul senior freaked out and sent him home. It was implied that as Vinnie had just had a baby [or rather his wife had] the last thing he needed was to lose pay. He was a full time worker.

I know much of American Chopper is staged, but the reaction of the individual concerned looked very genuine. I can usually spot the staged stuff, cynic that I am.

I saw something similar in another show, the Boyd Codington thing.

It would surprise me if your laws were so much different to ours.

MartinW,

I was employed in the Law Enforcement Field as well as the Law field. If we walked in the door and sent home for whatever reason we were paid for the first 4 hours or 5 hours if you are scheduled for a 10 hr day. If we were sent home after the 4th hour or 5th hour we were paid for the full day. :yikes:

Most of this was handled by our Unions, but there were also rules and regulations written in the job specs, with the County. Now if we were scheduled for Court on our day off, and the case was settled, or a postponment was granted before we arrived, we got paid for the full day at Overtime wages and for the full shift. This happens 95% of the time in Traffic Court. :wow:

If we had to travel out of town for the case, we also were given meal, travel, lodging and gas reimbursements. Not bad. I usually flew the County Helicopter to Court if it was out of the County - Venue changes, so it got to be pretty pricey for the Defense Side as they paid to reimburse the County when they had conflicts, or just forgot to get there for the scheduled date.

But what about being sent home as a disciplinary measure?

In the UK it's something I've not come across, don't know of anyone being sent home, if you were, you would not have your pay cut.

It was the episode of American Chopper I was curios about where the employee was sent home, the implication was he would loose a days pay. Could well have been nonsense set up by the show's producers. Conflict is a requirement in any narrative and that includes TV shows, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Welcome to the forum by the way.
