stu7708 244
Found this through a swedish online newssite. http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2009/05/14/9460296.html According to the swedish newssite the airline claims this happens every now and then. As someone not at all involed in RL aviation that statement sounds very strange, is that really true?
allardjd 1,853
Landing gear issues do occur from time to time, though not all that frequently. If you flew every day it would probably be years before you actually experienced one. Towing it to the gate was probably just a precaution. It looks like the remaining wheel was doing fine, though the brakes may have been affected by the missing wheel. The whole caliper went and there was probably a loss of fluid that disabled the rest. The pilots may not have known they had a problem until they pressed the brakes or until the tower told them there was a cloud of parts behind them. I'm sure they must have had to close the runway for a while to clear the bits and pieces. Having chunks of the last AC to land ingested into the engines of a departing AC is bad form.
