simi_av8r 0
not hardware, but definietly worth a mention here for you chaps! Apple released yesterday (12th June '07) a beta of their web browser 'Safari' for both Mac and XP/Vista systems. Since installing it, i have to admit that FirFox hardly gets used...Safari 3.0 boots and loads pages in almost half the time of FireFox2.0, and many times faster than IE7. see the features, watch QT movies of it in use and get the free beta version here. mutley 4,495
Hi Simi, Thanks for the HU  I went and had a look at this and it's nice, very nice, but I think I just cannot let go of my beloved Firefox for the time being. I've just got it working the way I want it and that's good for Vista :mrhappy: Maybe soon. Cheers
dgor 0
Simi, It was with some reluctance that I downloaded and installed Safari, as my last foray into the murky world of Windows/Mac cross-breeding didn't go very well at all Now, first impressions: it's good. It's definitely packed with handy features, even if Firefox did have some of them anyway (and Apple still boasted about them). It also looks nicer with the more stylish default font replacing what we're used to in other Microsoft applications. I do have a few gripes though. Chief among which is the drain on resources. With this one tab open in Safari, it's using just over 96,000K of memory, according to the Task Manager. Which is over twice as much as Firefox 2.0 would give me with one tab open. It's not bad on its own but I can feel my ancient system taking the strain if I open other applications such as Thunderbird (next on Apple's hit list no doubt). Also, it dosen't seem to load pages much faster than good ol' FF, although with my internet connection I can hardly blame it. I'm willing to give it a go for a while anyway, always bearing in mind that this is still a beta. I have a certain respect for Apple (except the Ipods) and am always happy to try out a Windows-based application from them. I'll keep you posted - thanks for the heads up  Cheers, Dave
dgor 0
Simi, Having a bit of a problem here, any ideas? Can Safari open multiple tabs as a homepage like FF can? If so, how? Dave
simi_av8r 0
Simi,Having a bit of a problem here, any ideas? Can Safari open multiple tabs as a homepage like FF can? If so, how? Dave erm, in a word no - but Safari 3.0 is still in beta form!! and, as a developer and beta tester through my work asa an Apple Authorised Engineer (yeah i know, shameless plug!) i've already requested this feature, along with a few more... dragging/organising tabs was one i requested way back, and look at this vid (approx 40secs in!) there it is! movable tabs, and new windows from tabs - FireFox cant do that!!.... Oh, and yes, at the moment it does use HUGE resources, but again its Beta, and this will be sorted...after all, it is Apple and they pride themselves on design and ease-of-use! mutley 4,495
Hi Simi, I have just checked Firefox, you can organise the tabs by dragging them left and right along the tabs. If you drag them to the desktop then it creates a shortcut to the page rather than opening another window which in my eyes makes more sense as you already have that tab open in the browser. Don't get me wrong, I like Apple software and hardware but I hold them in the same regard as I do Microsoft. (I will say no more) The only exception to that rule for me is iPod, I have a measly Nano 4Gb, and that's because the doctor recommended it to help with my tinnitus but I cannot fault it Cheers
