JFK Runway to Close for 4 Months

Recommended Posts

What a nightmare for ATC. I didn't realise it's a backup landing spot for the space shuttle.

The runway is being repaved with concrete instead of less-durable asphalt and widened to accommodate today's bigger planes.

Boy, I would love that contract!

I'm seeing no indication of any backlash over this. Surely there's a paper-storm going on over it - that is assured anytime anyone declares an emergency for anything. A fellow OFSC member once blew a jug off a Bonanza on departure and declared an emergency. ATC cleared him to land anywhere on the field - he did a 180 to land dead-stick going downwind on the same runway he'd just departed and was met on the runway by fire trucks. After they towed his AC to the FBO, he was greeted by two FAA people who insisted on seeing under the cowling to assure themselves that there really had been an emergency. I guess the oil on the windshield wasn't good enough.

Anyway, the JFK pilot appears to have escaped with his ticket intact and I applaud him for doing the right thing for safety. However, I'd guess that it's not a card that one could get away with playing very often. If he were to do that again anytime soon for anything less than a wing falling off, the FAA would most likely be down on him like a ton of bricks.

That was a brutal cross-wind and when he asked for the better runway ATC was apparently not too accomodating, so he took the decision out of their hands. He didn't request anything - he declared an emergency and HE told THEM exactly what manuevers he was doing, which was exactly the correct thing to do. At that point, all ATC could do was to get everyone else out of his way.
