Be warned - image intensive and plenty of reading!! That's all for now, Simi
JD_LincsUK 0
Hey Simi, I was looking for a modelling thread here - was under the impression one was available, but seemingly not. Perhaps you can help me with my current problem. I used to build models a lot and never had any issues, but recently started again (so out of practice) and am having trouble with the decals. Admittedly, the model they look worst on has been in the cupboard for some 12 years or so, but I didn't think that would make a difference. Have a looky: It's the 'polythene' effect from the carrier tissue. I placed the decals onto the satin paint I had used (over matt) to paint the model, left them for a day, and then applied semi-gloss/satin varnish. The tissue effect was visible before varnishing, but I hoped that is would sort of 'soak in'. Obviously, it didn't! On this older model (which would seem to be quite literally falling apart at the seams now), there's no such issue: Yet I can't remember any particular techniques that I used to avoid this (t)issue! arf. Modelling mags keep harping on about applying decals using the 'correct method', whilst never revealing what they consider that to be. Any help appreciated JD
simi_av8r 0
Hi JD, I've experienced this effect before. It's known as 'silvering' and usually occurs when placing the decal onto a naked matt/satin finish, but can also be attributed to the age of the decal. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do post application, but plenty of opportunities/methods to prevent it prior to application. The most common being to apply a GLOSS varnish over the finished paint before decal application, apply the decals and 'seal in' with the desired satin/matt varnish afterwards. Another method is to use a combination and Decal solvents such as Micro-Sol and Micro-Set which help the decals to conform to the microscopic raised areas of a matt/satin finish (gloss surfaces by their very nature are near perfectly smooth) and set in position. One final method, and one that i'll be rolling out onto my BF110, is the use of Johnsons Klear Floor Wax!! Basically, you over-coat the model in a thin layer (applied by either brush or airbrush) of teh Klear, allow to dry and apply the decal, then recoat in a further layer of Klear to seal-in the decal. This results in a high gloss finish, however the Klear CAN be mixed with Tamiya Acrylic Flat Base (X21) in differing quantities to 'dull' down the shine to a matt/satin finish if required. The Klear is ACRYLIC based and so cannot be overcoated with enamel varnishes. Hope that helps, if not let me know, i'll see what else i can suggest. Si
hurricanemk1c 195
The older bottles of Johnson's Floor Wax is better than the new one (apparently) - they've changed the formula but I'm not sure what difference it makes. I'll have a trawl through Model Rail tonight for you But, apart from that, I'd echo everything Simon has said!
JD_LincsUK 0
Thanks for the info - I'll give those methods a try. Klear, huh? :shrug_no: We used to use that in the army as 'artificial bull' on our boot toecaps! I'd have thought it was a bit thick - but will give it a go, nevertheless. Cheers, JD
simi_av8r 0
Thanks for the info - I'll give those methods a try. Klear, huh? :shrug_no: We used to use that in the army as 'artificial bull' on our boot toecaps! GENIUS idea - i'll have to experiment with my RAF shoes, never thought of that to be honest. I'd have thought it was a bit thick - but will give it a go, nevertheless. not at all, it should be a milky colour and similar in consistency. it also works really well if slightly thinned down with water in an airbrush. JD_LincsUK 0
it also works really well if slightly thinned down with water in an airbrush woah there! I'm only just carefully sliding myself back in to modelling - I still have my old airbrush, but it's staying securely in it's box until I've upped the confidence level a bit more. Models are too expensive to screw up these days. Actually, I built the Meteor to kick-start things again. It's a series 1 Airfix kit, but after I started building it a couple of months ago, I read on the Airfix forum that it has become quite rare. Typical! :001_th_smiles48: I've bought some rather large stuff, too - the 1:72 Nimrod, 1:48 Canberra B(I)8 and F.27 as well as the Eduard 1:48 Frogfoot. I'll have to be careful, historically I always sucked at building the big ones. However, through my Airfix Club membership, I also got some nice 72nd small stuff: and the Harrier set (wouldn't quite fit on the scanner): I'll be building the Su-25K Frogfoot last, as it's way in advance of anything I've ever built before, what with brass, resin and photo-etched metal parts, too. I'm amazed at how much the hobby has come on in recent years, tbh. JD
hurricanemk1c 195
I'm building a Nimrod kit too - nice and cheap from www.ehattons.com (total £23.50 including postage!). She is a big, big kit, but taking it in small steps, and in sub-assembles (tailplanes etc), and she'll soon come together! Built the Canberra, but in 1/72. They use the same moulds, so the 1/48 one should be a nice kit to build! Currently building a Hawk (although not a T.1). She also seems to a beauty! Good luck!
simi_av8r 0
wow, this really is turning into a fully fledged Scale Model thread! If this keeps up, and a solid interest appears on the group i'll see what i can rustle up regards a tips/knowledge base along with Q&A thread.... Si
mutley 4,498
I am more than happy to create a modellers forum if there's enough interest, it can cover trains, planes and automobiles?
simi_av8r 0
I am more than happy to create a modellers forum if there's enough interest, it can cover trains, planes and automobiles? great news Joe, thanks for the show of support... personally, i think the link between Flight Sims and Scale Models is quite strong, both are there to emulate reality, and can often be used together to assist with each other - for example a well made scale model can be of great use when trying to find information of paint schemes and parts on flight models. the exact opposite can also be true. I used the BF-110/G2 modelled very well under the IL2 simulator as a reference for the cockpit colouring as the supposedly 'detailed' build instructions didn't show the cockpit in detail! i agree, though to test the waters and get a sense of the interest/consensus regards a separate forum for Modelling, although think it would be well used, if only by myself, Keiran and JD.... mutley 4,498
Ok Simi, Create a poll if you want, to judge interest. Personally it would interest me as a spectator but I wouldn't have much to contribute. Cheers Joe
hurricanemk1c 195
I'm in for that idea - planes, trains and buses for me! I think it would be well used, and might get some more people interested in the great world of modelling! Must showcase the complete N gauge collection soon....
simi_av8r 0
poll going up....here's the link Joe, if you could publicise it in the news/announcements or 'pin'/'sticky' it for a short time here, i think we'd need to get as much click-through onto the poll as possible to make it worthwhile... mutley 4,498
Will do, it will pin it up
JD_LincsUK 0
Currently building a Hawk (although not a T.1). She also seems to a beauty! Ah, is that the great-looking Hawk 128/132? I have got to get me one of those! :wootmesalia: JD
hurricanemk1c 195
Yep - it is! I'll copy the instructions for you if you want to have a peek at the details, just PM me :001_th_smiles89:
