allardjd 1,853
No Jets, No Problem: Completely New Kind of Aircraft Debuts http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/06/23/completely-new-kind-aircraft-propulsion-system-made-rotating-cylinders/?intcmp=obnetwork Hmmm... A little too soon to get excited but interesting. The prototype can lift 150 lbs with 120 bhp, which is OK, but not stellar. A C-172 can lift about 1,000 lbs. more than it weighs on about 150 bhp, just to keep things in perspective. The basic problem is that if you don't have wings to produce lift all the lift must come from the engine directly. Think about a Harrier in hover - the engine is almost firewalled and it can't lift off vertically with a full load. In a way, it's more like the F-35B, using a fan to generate lift, but that fan can lift over 40,000 lbs. This is worth keeping an eye on, but I wouldn't buy stock just yet. allardjd 1,853
I had the exact same thought when I saw the photo, Kieran, but of course the mechanics of it are entirely different. John
