275.33 Malfunction

Recommended Posts

I installed the new 275.33 driver from Nvidia when it came out, and all was well up until yesterday. I was flying in FSX and the screen went blank, turn off, reboot etc.. and all was OK.

It did the same again today but I got a message saying that the driver had malfunctioned and the screen went pixelated and died on me.

I re-installed an older driver and went back to a restore point but each time I load the PC now in normal mode I get a BSOD before I log-in, but safe-modes allow me to boot up fine with no problems (other than a load of red lines all over the screen)

Any ideas how to solve thise?

Unfortunately all the system restore points are post driver installation. I had a look around and it appears that W7 deletes restore points after a month

Hoping I don't need to do a re-installation of everything

That is one thing that google searches have thrown up. I don't see why it should overheat though; the case is raised around 2" off the floor and has lots of space around it for air circulation. Are there any methods to determine what is happening?

Think that Joe has made a good point.

It may be a good idea to try another video card if you have one? as the GTX8800 cards are getting pretty old now, and it may have just packed up.

Also, a few years back I have a similar thing happen on a old pc of mine, it turned out to be a faulty power supply!, only found that out after I did a full re-install of my OP :(

Only other suggestions I have are:

1) Try to find a driver removal tool to clear out the newer driver files before installing the older driver. Maybe something is left behind that the older driver doesn't overwrite.

2) Try taking out & reseating your graphics card in its slot.

3) Try blowing out any excess dust that might cause overheating.

If it's crashing from a cold boot as soon as you log in, I'd say it was most likely a driver fault than a hardware fault. That said (having just re-read your post), the red lines across the screen sound more like a hardware fault, but options 2 & 3 may help...

Good luck!

Thanks Guys

@Joe - I cannot use the GPU program because I cannot install anything in safe mode :(

@Martyn - Already done 1+3, wouldn't have a clue how to do 2.

I searched around for a new 8800gtx but I cannot get one from anywhere

I think a trip to the FSX specialist websites is in order :(

EDIT:

I uninstalled the gfx card via the device manager and the PC booted up, although still with the red lines (screenshot below). I re-installed the drivers and I was back to square one. There is a video/several posts saying putting the card in the over for 10mins will fix it, but I'm not so sure about that!

So, who do you recommend to build a top notch FSX PC, and tboughts about what needs to be included?

Before you get another video card, do you have a spare PC in the house so you can swap the GTX8800 out, to see if it will work on that one?.

If it works ok on that machine, then we can strike if off the list as being faulty!.

And start looking for other problems?

If your video card is to blame, you do not need to buy another GTX8800 (these as so old now you will never find a new one anyway) you can just by a newer nvidia card, if you can find an GTX460 that would be a very good choice, the prices of these are down now, as the nvidia GTX5 series cards have been out for a bit and the older 4 series are being knocked out at cheaper prices because of that.

(IMO when buying video cards, always invest in last years technology, you can find some real good deals that way ;) )

Thanks Graham

I've not got another PC I can test it on, but Her Who Shall Be Obeyed has OK'd a new PC! The current one is a few years old so it might be time to invest in a new one. I've sent out a few info requests so I'll see what comes back
