mutley 4,498
As mentioned in my reply to Simi, I was flying the Schmittfire list night from Aeroplane Heaven. [From AH] The unusual hybrid aircraft that used a DB 605A-1 engine ( as found in the Messerchmitt BF 109 ) and the main airframe of a MK Vb Supermarine Spitfire. In late 1942 the MKVb aircraft crash landed in Jersey (Channel Islands ) and the aircraft was taken to a testing area within Germany. A suggestion was made that it should be fitted with a Daimler-Benz engine to more adequately gauge the performance against the BF-109, at this point that the Aircraft was transported to the Daimler Benz factory. It was found after trying a number of different front ends , that the BF 110 cowling was a very good fit to the Spitifire's cross-section and a new support was made up and the Damiler-Benz engine of the BF109 was fitted. Because of the slightly longer nose and the heavier front end you have to trim out the aircraft a little more than you would normally need to on a "regulation" spitfire Link to the Smitt Here Cheers

allardjd 1,853
If they had put the Merlin and the Spit nose on a BF-109 would it be a Messerspit? Very interesting post, Mut. I really enjoyed it. They did love yellow paint, didn't they? John
