I'm determined to fly all the legs this year, so got the first one in this afternoon - YBCS-YPMP. A flight of 283nm.

We're cleared to go at Cairns

ScreenHunter_01Jan281257.jpg

And the GAAR is underway as the tower waves us off

ScreenHunter_02Jan281258.jpg

Climbing to cruise altitude of 8,500ft

ScreenHunter_03Jan281309.jpg

There are a few clouds up here, but nothing serious

ScreenHunter_04Jan281320.jpg

Hot hot hot

ScreenHunter_05Jan281405.jpg

There is some great scenery along the way, thanks Orbx

ScreenHunter_06Jan281420.jpg

Airfield in sight, time for the circuit

ScreenHunter_07Jan281500.jpg

I'll be glad to get down, the weather at pattern altitude is quite bumpy

ScreenHunter_09Jan281509.jpg

Now, where can I get a roo-burger

After a night on the town with some other GAAR entrants, it was time to get back into Dizzie and take to the skies for Leg 2. This looked like a lonely leg as most of it was over water...

Engines nice and warm, lets go

ScreenHunter_01Jan290827.jpg

The water looks nice and inviting, maybe I'll come back another time

ScreenHunter_02Jan290829.jpg

Not much to see over the land due to the clouds

ScreenHunter_03Jan290853.jpg

ScreenHunter_04Jan290910.jpg

Picking up the Great Barrier Reef

ScreenHunter_06Jan291137.jpg

You've got to be kidding me!

ScreenHunter_07Jan291151.jpg

I have no fear

ScreenHunter_09Jan291201.jpg

Safely down, anyone flying leg 2 make sure you cross the threshold at virtually a stall

Emma was going to be home late, it was a quiet day at work so I snuck off home early to get let 3 done...

Barely making it out of Murray Island

ScreenHunter_02Jan301707.jpg

Clouds, rain & sunset, sound like my kinda flight

ScreenHunter_03Jan301716.jpg

ScreenHunter_04Jan301728.jpg

The colours enroute were fantastic

ScreenHunter_07Jan301734.jpg

Wipers working hard to clear the windscreen - had to stick my head out of the window to see where I was going

ScreenHunter_08Jan301737.jpg

Over-flying AYPY

ScreenHunter_09Jan301905.jpg

Turning to finals, almost there now

ScreenHunter_10Jan301911.jpg

Safely down just before the AI LearJet lands

ScreenHunter_12Jan301920.jpg

That's me done until Friday

After what seemed like an endless week it was time to hop back into Dizzie and take to the skies for Leg 4

We left Port Moresby without much of a fanfare...

ScreenHunter_03Feb031307.jpg

ScreenHunter_04Feb031307.jpg

...and climbed out just as the sun was rising, which helped us avoid the mountains

ScreenHunter_05Feb031309.jpg

Clouds are becoming a feature of this adventure

ScreenHunter_06Feb031318.jpg

ScreenHunter_08Feb031337.jpg

ScreenHunter_09Feb031409.jpg

Yup, the airport we are making the touch and go at is in that lot

ScreenHunter_12Feb031423.jpg

There it is!

ScreenHunter_13Feb031423.jpg

Touch

ScreenHunter_14Feb031424.jpg

And go, climbing back up to get over some more pesky mountains

ScreenHunter_15Feb031457.jpg

Almost there now, SDR runway in sight

ScreenHunter_18Feb031521.jpg

Thanks for flying, see you tomorrow for leg 5

ScreenHunter_19Feb031522.jpg

I wasn't expecting great things from this leg but was only .46 mins late, which is about 28 seconds! If only EasyJet were that good

The snow may be falling outside my window, but in PNG it's red hot

Leg 5 is by far the toughest so far, up and down and up and down over the mountains.

Steep climb out and a couple of circuits to gain height. We have to get over the mountains and quickly down for a T+G

ScreenHunter_02Feb041321.jpg

T+G Complete, it's back up and over for a landing at AYAG to refuel

ScreenHunter_05Feb041403.jpg

Clouds rolling in

ScreenHunter_06Feb041407.jpg

Uh Oh

ScreenHunter_07Feb041414.jpg

The last photo reminds me a bit of this

The next phase of the flight was a bit easier

ScreenHunter_08Feb041435.jpg

Mendi in sight, commencing final approach

ScreenHunter_10Feb041508.jpg

Landed a little harder than usual, but it's a landing

ScreenHunter_11Feb041512.jpg

Flight time 126.58 dai

As you can tell by how quickly I'm getting through these flights, I'm loving this year's GAAR.

Leg 6 takes us from Mendi to Tabubil with a touch and go at Tari...

Departing Mendi, had to take care not to chop the camera man up with the props. There is a rumour of canibalism around here, so he would've been cleared up quickly!

ScreenHunter_02Feb051047.jpg

Making the short trip to Tari, nice weather again

ScreenHunter_03Feb051124.jpg

Runway in sight, maybe a touch low

ScreenHunter_05Feb051133.jpg

Cameraman stayed well clear this time during climbout from Tari

ScreenHunter_08Feb051134.jpg

Onwardto Tabubil, lovely terrain and great weather for it

ScreenHunter_09Feb051141.jpg

A view of an airfield surrounded in clouds is becoming a feature of this adventure

ScreenHunter_11Feb051229.jpg

Heading along a valley to our destination

ScreenHunter_12Feb051235.jpg

Carefully setting her down

ScreenHunter_13Feb051238.jpg

And so we move on to leg 7...

Deapture was a bit tricky, had to weave through the hills

ScreenHunter_01Feb051333.jpg

Managing to stay above the clouds but still stuck in the rain (?)

ScreenHunter_03Feb051416.jpg

Makes for some good pictures though

ScreenHunter_05Feb051518.jpg

ScreenHunter_06Feb051521.jpg

Destination in sight, time to slow her down and enter the circuit

ScreenHunter_07Feb051525.jpg

Nicely lined up

ScreenHunter_08Feb051532.jpg

Think I got a bit too close to the tower

Leg 8 of the rally and we are given a warning 'one of the shorter runways'...

Climbing away from Morehead

ScreenHunter_02Feb111229.jpg

Enroute to our first stop at Saibai Island we pass this strange formation

ScreenHunter_04Feb111301.jpg

Landed, fueled up and ready to go to our final destination of Coconut Island

ScreenHunter_05Feb111316.jpg

Climbing out, the weather is perfect

ScreenHunter_06Feb111317.jpg

Clouds make for excellent screenshots

ScreenHunter_07Feb111324.jpg

Flying over YCCT, this flight just got interesting...

ScreenHunter_09Feb111338.jpg

...very interesting

ScreenHunter_10Feb111339.jpg

There's nothing left to do but try to avoid getting wet. My flippers are packed just in case

ScreenHunter_12Feb111347.jpg

Crossing the fence (I like this one)

ScreenHunter_13Feb111349.jpg

To say we just made it is an understatement!

After allowing the brakes to cool I decided to take to the skies again

I was glad to see the back of Coconut Island

ScreenHunter_15Feb111419.jpg

I'll miss these excellent weather themes when I get back to flying in Europe

ScreenHunter_16Feb111431.jpg

First sight of the mainland

ScreenHunter_18Feb111452.jpg

Lockhart River in sight, time to join the pattern

ScreenHunter_20Feb111530.jpg

Turn to finals

ScreenHunter_22Feb111536.jpg

Nice lined up and configured for landing

ScreenHunter_23Feb111539.jpg

Where's the BBQ?

After 10 fantastic flights, over 2,000 miles and over 18 hours flight time it was time to bring this year's GAAR to a close...

For the last time we are cleared for take-off

ScreenHunter_01Feb121037.jpg

Rumbling into the blue skies

ScreenHunter_02Feb121038.jpg

This was a nice and easy flight, a welcome break from the mountains of PNG

ScreenHunter_04Feb121120.jpg

Afternoon began to change to dusk

ScreenHunter_05Feb121141.jpg

Brilliant weather textures

ScreenHunter_07Feb121146.jpg

ScreenHunter_08Feb121155.jpg

Dusk turned to evening as we approached Cooktown, I was expecting a bit more of a fanfare to welome me

ScreenHunter_09Feb121205.jpg

Seems I caught them by surprise, the fireworks started just after I passed overhead. Good job really!

ScreenHunter_11Feb121210.jpg

I think I'll fly a little to the left on approach

ScreenHunter_16Feb121215.jpg

View from the ground as we are almost there

ScreenHunter_18Feb121217.jpg

Thank you Andrew for a fantastic event
