Mishap on Barra

(subtitled, How to write off a perfectly good aeroplane!)

The year is 1943, Over the islands a Scottish Airways DH89A Dragon Rapide makes her way slowly towards the Isle of Barra

rapideSAcrz.jpg

a while later and she's downwind for this beach airstrip

rapidebarra.jpg

on the approach, flaps down and doing around 50kts

rapideappBarra.jpg

touchdown and the stones and sand rattle against the aircraft

rapidetouchdownbarra.jpg

after a brief turn around the engines are restarted, for some reason the starboard engine seems a bit reluctant, could be sand in the engine.

rapideengst.jpg

Unbeknown to the pilot the wind has picked up and has changed direction, it's now blowing across the runway! the aircraft begins her run as normal but the wind blows her off of the compacted area into the loose wet mud of the beach, disaster !

rapidetipbarra.jpg

engines screaming she ploughs into the watery sand quickly tipping over on the tideline,

rapidecrashBarra.jpg

once the tide is out the aircraft presents a forlorn sight !

Shock loaded engines and at least one bent prop, for starters, If they try to pull the tail back down it could break her back, and heavy recovery gear cannot get to the location. In short, she's a write off. :( Opps! someones in trouble !

Thanks Guys, It was a shame to bend the aircraft but the Barra Scenery is superb and it's a freeware addon. Ok it's just a small aiport builting and a couple of trucks plus of course the runways highlighted on the sand. (in realitiy it all looks the same coulour but the author gives you a fighting chance of where to land by altering it slightly. But be warned, although you can taxi off the runways towards the terminal etc, If you do it when running toward the sea this is what happens, It behaves exactly like loose wet sand does!

The bent prop was done with a bit of photoshop painting, pixel by pixel! ( Start,paint,edit,8x enlarge then use the colour drop and pencil to create the bent prop and erase the good one! )
