Sopwith F1 Camel - Aerofly FS

Recommended Posts

I wonder why it was named a Camel, maybe it gave the driver the hump?

More like cause it was know as difficult to handle just like a camel :D or because it had a big cover or "hump" over the guns. Always wondered this myself so looked it up Interesting and illustrious career and probably saved many lives.

Nice pic's Sam. :thum:

Great set of pics there,

The Camel was so named due to the hump over the guns. most aircraft of the time had the guns mounted on top of the forward fuselage, not inside it. It was a tricky aircraft to fly due to the massive torque roll from its rotary engine. More pilots were killed in accidents than they were in combat. It was a superb fighter in the right hands. The design evolved into the Snipe which was about as advanced as rotary engined aircraft could go. The Snipe survived right into the 1920s when it was succeded by more modern designs.

you may remember this set from a while back.
