http://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow.cfm?id=space-shuttles-enterprise I'd imagine there were a few tears that day. Absolutely breathtaking photos.

Then you do believe in Santa Claus Might as well. Nothing else to believe in.

This basically. Let's just get on with FS11 and hope for a 2014 release.
-
wow - they must be having a serious challenge selling anything to launch on Steam... That's like Sony trying to sell phones in the Apple store! I wonder how long before they declare Flight a failed project.

I'm with you on that one, John...when I was more active in the 'community' I met some fanatics who actually took offense at the word 'game' used in conjunction with MSFS - so much so that a slur campaign was started against the Aces Studio head because Microsoft was re-branding MSFS under the 'Microsoft Games' label at trade shows. lol - yes I appreciate simulation as much as the next sim junkie but getting upset over such things seems rather bizarre and obsessive. With respect to Flight, my point was more geared with respect to the quality of the game as supposed to whether it's a 'game'
-
True. Where else can one go on the Internet to discuss the finer aspects of cockpit-less aircraft?
-
Reading the review... So they created a game for a new market they *think* exists (but doesn't in retrospect) and have no time for the market that *does* exist??? Really? What is going on at Microsoft these days?
-
I'll be the bear in the room. Is there any need for a Microsoft Flight forum any more? This is, of course, subject to the discretion of Mut and the members at large...but personally, it feels almost as though Mut's Hanger is actually endorsing Flight as a serious sim just by having it. There are more credible sims in the 'Other' category that probably deserve a place before Flight. My 2 cents

Sums up my thoughts nicely.

"So you can't simulate flying-as-transportation in Flight, and you can't replicate flying-as-fun either. So what's the point? You got me." Spot on.
-
800 points for the a stock 'Mustang'? LOL! That can take that and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Gave it a shot with an open mind and man - it is really dumbed down. The fact that it forced you through the b.s. lessons just to get to free flight really annoyed me. Once I was able to get out and fly around, I'm forced to agree, there's not much to see here. For the first time in history, I shut of a new 'sim' from Microsoft within 30 minutes of trying it and haven't thought about it since. Further to that - I can't even see the appeal for the market they're allegedly trying to appeal to - there's just nothing there. It all seems extremely unfinished.

The PC Pilot preview concluded that Flight was not for hardcore fans. But I'm still unsure as to whether that criticism is levelled because of the 'game' design or because the actual flight modelling is simply not up to par.
-
That's fair enough, Dai but it doesn't really answer my question. The controller used is not really a determining factor. The 360 controller is an analog controller not unlike that of an RC airplane so while it's certainly not 'preferred' for us older guys, it's completely viable as a flight controller nonetheless - and most of those using the keyboard/controller would have used assists.. Maybe the problem is that the model presented doesn't have an overly complex dynamics package. Some press explicitly says that this is 'the most accurate flight model yet' and that's a pretty bold stateme

WOW! Those aerofly vids look fantastic! Reminiscent of the first time I tried out Flight Unlimited (which I still think had better potential than MSFS)
-
Give me a little credit, Mutt.... I was only putting the airplane through it's paces and WHOOPS! - Look at that, 4 barrel rolls in 5 seconds. ...and I recovered the plane.
-
Is it definitely confirmed that this 'game' has no path to an accurate flight model? I seem to read conflicting information. Even as it is, if Flight's modelling is spot on (with all 'assists' turned off obviously) then I will invest in it even if that means buying the world piece-by-piece.

Yes - and...The BIGGEST shame in all of this is at LONG LAST we finally have a 'simulator' developed from the ground-up with DX11, in 64-bit with multi-core support inherent to the code and we find out it's NOT A SIM! Surprise surprise - it runs smoother and better on same equipment than FSX could ever possibly hope to do. ...and they serve it up for the kiddies. I wish X-plane could be the replacement for me - but even on last demo I STILL find the physics to be completely off. There's plenty of math in there on calculating 'blade theory' but very little (if any) to govern structural inte

I completely agree re Bill Gates - I think Microsoft has been sliding ever since Ballmer took over tbh. Everything is being driven towards a) Xbox and b) 'Family Entertainment' In addition to simming, I have been an avid console gamer and I am appalled and how badly Xbox division is being run. Microsoft seems so intent on chasing Apple, Google and Nintendo that they appear to have completely lost all sense of direction. How stupid things are getting can be summed up in one word: 'Bing' I still can't get that image of Ballmer's CES 2011 appearance saying 'We bing! We bing! ...and we bing

My thoughts: Why is it that whenever a new flight sim is released by Microsoft, it ends up becoming a big 'Battle Royale' between so-called 'enlightened' third-party developers, self-proclaimed 'community leaders' and the development team of Microsoft itself. At one time, I was very deeply involved within the flightsim community; particularly on the VATSIM side of things and took part in a number of initiatives which I choose not to discuss at the moment. I respect what all these people have done but in terms of lambasting Microsoft for 'letting them down' one way or another, my question to

The thing that gets me is that the whole point of having a triple-redundant INS is to avoid anomalies affecting the autopilot behaviour. How one nav unit influenced such violent behaviour in the VNAV is quite beyond understanding apart from some awful lack of safeguard at the most basic level of programming.

After many varied and interesting long-haul flights with a couple of 'YIKES' moments, I have long held the view that keeping your seat-belt fastened when not moving about the cabin is the best philosophy. This accident report should convince anyone to do the same: http://aviation-safety.net/news/newsitem.php?id=2475

Classic Kieran...love those. One of my fav ATC quotes is: (paraphrased) "American 228, hold pattern at Tango" ~ "Approach, we are a 727. Do you realise this bird burns 2000lbs of fuel for every circle?" "Roger that, American 228. Give me 4000lbs worth." @Mut, I also got a giggle out of the A340: "Low-rider" because it just seems to take so long to get off the ground. From personal experience, I think the A330 should inherit that one.
