SEATAC 400
Now I can finally have a 747 with 5 engines and an extra wing! These will soon be filling the skies and making a lot of left turns. Basically a test bed for the PW engine. Mitsubishi is getting into the commercial aircraft businees.

Steve KOCF 0
Not a clue what this was so found this to help it make sense...This link just mentions Mitsubishi's intended use of PW's newest. I like the left turn concept though! http://www.purepowerengine.com/MRJ_aircraft_information.html

GHAO 0
Naturally, they want to make money on this, but I'd like to see them give the tech out to their competitors for no charge, with a delay of maybe a year. Give it to everyone, more competition, more minds working on it. I like the sound of quieter, more economic engines.
brett 2,316
The first ones they probably sell are to the competition(through front companies of course ) for immediate reverse-engineering. .

dodgy-alan 1,587
The first 747s in service often carried a 5th engine under the wing inboard of the port inner. It was not in use but was in fact a spare engine as most airports did not carry them then and the early JT9Ds had a habit of going out of shape. The idea was not new as BOAC VC-10s also carried spares in pods on the wing when they first entered service. Other Widebodies such as the L1011 and DC-10 could do this as well. The practice is still used where the need for a spare engine is required http://images2.jetphotos.net/img/2/5/4/2/88966_1289076245.jpg

allardjd 1,853
I think I read a while back that a few of the A380s in service are configured to ferry a spare Trent engine to wherever it might be needed. John
dodgy-alan 1,587
I wonder if the AN225 can carry 7 engines? !
allardjd 1,853
It can probably carry 70 normal ones. John
