allardjd 1,853
10/1/13 Airport Diagrams New: 72TA Pierce Field - Port O'Connor, Texas - US 1B1 Columbia Co - Hudson, New York - US PHHI Wheeler AAF - Wahiawa, Hawaii - US Updated: KAVL Asheville Regl - Asheville, North Carolina - US (updated) Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,294; downloads 2,494; subscribers 16 These are all US airports today, including the update. I guess PHHI, Wheeler AAF is exotic enough to almost be considered foreign. Judging from the footprint there was no shortage of paving material when they built that place. When I first looked at it I groaned and thought, "Oh, no - four runways". Well most of them aren't runways at all though I suspect that at one time they might have been. The remaining one is a generous 295' wide. The place also has two circle-to-land approaches, one each NDB and VOR. 72TA was a surprise, another one from Port O'Connor TX. I just did another one from there less than two weeks ago. Like that one, this isn't much of an airport either. It's on a barrier island. This one has two 75' wide runways around a mile long each, both paved but nothing else is there. I'm wondering if it was once a secondary military field, an alternate landing site or something along those lines. 1B1, Columbia County in Hudson NY is a small upstate airport with a mile-long paved runway and a full-length parallel taxiway. The ramp is pretty decent and there are lights, but only two buildings and no tower. KAVL, Asheville, NC got the update treatment today, and went to two plates in the process. I guess it's the most detailed of the airports today, including a pretty complex terminal building. It's towered, lighted and has an ILS to each end of the single 8,000' runway. allardjd 1,853
10/2/13 Airport Diagrams New: KWHP Whiteman - Los Angeles, California - US YCOO Cooinda - Cooinda, Northern Territory - Australia CYFB Iqaluit - Iqaluit, Nunavut - Canada Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,297; downloads 2,494; subscribers 16 Whiteman is in the Los Angeles area, and like the rest of the area is mostly pavement. Lots of ramp space, though the runway is not particularly generous at 4,100' X 75'. It's towered and has three instrument approaches published for it, all three circle-to-land. Given the proximity to KLAX I expect that it's pretty convoluted airspace. YCOO is Cooinda in Oz - it's just a dirt strip but fell out of one of the lists. I'd have passed it by but it slid under my acceptance criteria bar by having a handful of published COM frequencies, which is kind of unusual for a bare strip airport with no buildings or other facilities. CYFB in Canada has an Indian sounding name and is in the relatively new Canadian province of Nunavut. It's at 63N, so is far up in the frozen north but appears to be a pretty full featured airport for that far out in the sticks. 63N in Canada is not quite like 63N in Norway or Sweden. CYFB is not towered but is over 8,500 X 200, is paved, lighted, has taxiways, ramps, buildings, fuel and even an ILS to one end. Half a dozen published approaches include an ILS, a BLOC, two CTLs and a couple of garden variety non-precision approaches. Nearby navaids include an NDB and a VOR (not VOR/DME) in close proximity. All in all, not half bad. I finished the last one after 0300, but it's done and posted. I also got the one update that was due today. Due to the late hour I'm not going to attempt any witty repartee about the airports today. allardjd 1,853
10/4/13 Airport Diagrams New: CKC8 Somerset - Somerset, Manitoba - Canada KBKF Buckley AFB - Aurora, Colorado - US KCGF Cuyahoga Co - Cleveland, Ohio - US Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,303; downloads 2,494; subscribers 17 Today was less hectic but I still didn't get my diagram work done until late. CKC8 in Manitoba, Canada is pretty small but has a short taxiway, parking ramp and a few buildings, so it gets in by several measures. Nothing is paved and there are no facilities to speak of, including nearby navaids. The other two, Buckley AFB in Aurora CO (KBKF) and Cuyahoga Co, in Cleveland OH are pretty complex airports and both required two plates. Buckley has a single 11,000' runway. It has relatively few buildings but they are large and one is a custom structure. Cuyahoga County's airport is not as large. The runway is about 5,100' but it has a lot of buildings including three custom ones. Oddly there's an LMM (co-located NDB and Middle Marker) but no LOM at the Outer Marker - that's not unheard of but isn't the normal layout. It also has a Backcourse Localizer approach on the list of available approaches. This one came from the sequestered airports list. allardjd 1,853
10/5/13 Airport Diagrams New: KBFD Bradford Regl - Bradford, Pennsylvania - US KCIC Chico Mun - Chico, California - US SBAN Anapolis Air Base - Anapolis, Brazil Updated: KIPJ Lincolnton-Lincoln Co Regl - Lincolnton, North Carolina - US (updated) Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,306; downloads 2,496; subscribers 17 Bradford Regl (BFD) in Pennsylvania is non-towered but has all the other features you'd expect for a towered airport. It has a pair of paved, crossing runways, one 6,500' X 150 with an ILS to one end and a half-dozen or so non-precision approaches. KCIC is Chico Mun in Chico, CA. This one is towered, with a pair of parallel runways, one much larger than the other. There are two fuel pumps, a VOR/DME on the field and an ILS to one end of the large runway, plus a good assortment of other approaches. This one required two plates. SBAN is Anapolis Air Base - no, not THAT Anapolis - I didn't misspell it and there are no plebes here. This one is in Brazil. It came from the military airfields list. As with most military fields in FS it's a pretty barren place. The only building on the field is the control tower. It has a 10,800 X 150 foot runway, however, so I don't think it was built for gliders. The update is Lincoln Co Regl, in Lincolnton, NC, with the non-intuitive ICAO code of KIPJ - I'm guessing the place might have had a different name at some point. I'm also reasonably sure this is NOT the Lincoln Intl that was featured in the movie Airport, a long time ago. It's non-towered but has a mile-long runway, a good taxiway system and an ample ramp for a field that size. There is an ILS of sorts but it's really the poor cousin of an ILS - a localizer only setup. If you've never noticed the mini-runway table, this is a good opportunity to point it out. On this plate (KIPJ) it lies to the east of the runway, near the NE end. You'll find one of these mini-tables on my diagrams if there's an ILS runway at the field. If present, it will have a row for each runway that has data in the ILS fields of the main runway table at the bottom - no ILS runways, no mini-table. Note the column labeled "GS". That's Glide Slope, and an "N" in that column signifies a Localizer Only system - don't waste time waiting for the glide slope needle to wake up - it's not going to. A "LOC" entry in the Approaches table is another way to spot one of these - a full ILS will say "ILS" instead of "LOC" in the Approach table. As far as I know, those localizer only setups are not easily discernable from within FS, which is the reason that mini-table exists on my diagrams - they pre-date the Approach tables, which I didn't begin to add until much later. I blundered into several localizer only fields in my AirHauler travels and always expected a full-ILS, not knowing any better. allardjd 1,853
10/6/13 Airport Diagrams New: KANE Anoka Co-Blaine - Minneapolis, Minnesota - US MA66 Wolomolopoag - Sharon, Massachusetts - US E57 Denver City - Denver City, Texas - US Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,309; downloads 2,496; subscribers 17 There are a couple of odd ones in here tonight. MA66 is one of them and I'm not referring to the airport name though I guess that's kind of odd too. Anything in New England with a name ending in "oag" is generally blamed on the Indians, whether it's their fault or not. The place looks more like a bean patch than an airport, with not much of anything except two grass runway that are - are you ready for this - 1,600' long and 1,000' wide. Given that one with the height of absurdity in runway widths, I present E57 in Denver City, Texas. If the ratio of runway length to width at MA66 is 1.6:1, E57's runways are at the other end of the scale - their long one is 5,780' X 50', yielding a ratio of about 115:1. Their shorter runway is only 45' wide but has smaller ratio. I can't help but wonder at the design process that coughed up a 45' wide runway. They must have been working to a strict budget. KANE in Minneapolis MN is much more ordinary than the other two except for a very high population of what appear to be T-Hangars. This must be the GA airport of choice for the Twin Cities area, though I had never heard of it until it fell out of the sequester list today. This one went to two plates. allardjd 1,853
10/7/13 Airport DiagramsNew: LICZ Sigonella Mil - Catania, Italy 9D0 Highmore Mun - Highmore, South Dakota - US KRZL Jasper Co - Rensselaer, Indiana - USUpdated: EGBK Sywell - Northampton, UK (updated) Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,312; downloads 2,496; subscribers 17 LICZ is listed in Italy but is on the island of Sicily. I believe it is used by NATO forces routinely and was probably used extensively in the recent festivities in Libya. It has two parallel runways and is pretty good sized but isn't long on detail in FSX, like most military fields. 9D0 in Highmore SD is another grass strip municipal with a fairly short but wide runway at 2,800' X 250'. It appears to be pretty remote since it has no naviads within 20 NM and no approaches. The only COM frequencies are CTAF and Multicomm, both on the same channel. KRZL in Rensselaer IN is another small muni but a bit better equipped than 9D0. It has a pair of runways in a T configuration, one grass and one paved. The paved one is about 4,000 X 60. There's an NDB on the field, a Center frequency listed and a pair of non-precision approaches - it has just a few buildings. The update today is EGBK, Sywell, in Northampton, UK. It seems to have more buildings that anything else but boasts three grass runways in a triangular layout, the biggest at a little over 3,000' X 98'. It is lighted and lists an FSS frequency but there are no published approaches. Tomorrow will probably be a no-production day. I have other plans and expect to get back too late for airport diagrams. ------------------------ Another set of add-on waypoints have been posted at the Mutley's Hangar File Library if you're using them. Aviano, LIPA, surprised me by not having a tower. I thought it was a pretty major military base but apparently MS didn't think so. KBVY in Beverly MA is from the sequester list and isn't too remarkable. It is another example of an ILS that isn't - it's one of those localizer-only setups. Caveat emptor. Your glide slope needle is not going to wake up there, no matter how close you get. It's a non-precision approach any way you cut it. 32AK is Hardrock Field in Alaska - I love the name but hope they don't use it as an excuse to build a casino there. It's pretty much right in Fairbanks, not out in the sticks as you might guess from the name, so for all I know it may already have a casino. It doesn't have much else going for it, other than a pair of grass runways and some navaids in the not-too-distant neighborhood. I threatened no diagrams for today but the travel plans fell through. It is a possibility for tomorrow, so there may be none - playing it by ear at this point. You have to spend some up front time to save some later, I guess. The only airport I diagrammed today is KSTS, named for Charles M. Schulz of the famous Peanuts comic strip. Anyone who gave us the famous WWI flying ace on his doghouse, shaking his fist and saying, "Curse you, Red Baron", certainly deserves to have an airport named after him, though I'm not sure what he did to deserve it being one in California. It's a good sized 2-runway airport, both over 5,000' long and in an inverted V configuration. There's one ILS (a real one) and the airfield is towered and lighted, with several non-precision approaches to go along with the single ILS. This one is a two-plater. allardjd 1,853
10/11/13 Airport Diagrams New: EFHA Halli AB - Halli, Finland KUGN Waukegan Regl - Chicago/Waukegan, Illinois - US NZOP Opotiki - Opotiki, New Zealand Updated: EGSH Norwich - Norwich, UK (updated) Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,319; downloads 2,499; subscribers 17 This is a truly international batch today - Finland, Chicago, New Zealand and the UK. Yeah, I know, Chicago is supposed to be in the US, but I've been there and... Actually, Waukegan is pretty far north in Chicago and probably should not be painted with the same brush. KUGN is a decent looking airport. The larger of the two runways, both paved, is about 6,000' X 150'. There are a fair number of buildings including one custom one that may be a small terminal building. It's towered and has one ILS. This one needed two plates to accommodate the taxiway labeling and fitting the rest in was a challenge. The taxiway labeling is another hatchet job with one entire parallel taxiway with nothing designated to identify it - NE side of Runway 14/32 if you're interested in looking. EFHA is Halli Air Base, in Finland, another military field sans buildings. Its runway is about 8,500' X 200' (OK, 197, which no doubt translates to something in even meters). It's towered and has an ILS but I'd like it a lot better if it had buildings. The taxiway labeling is odd too, but at least it has some - many of the military fields in stock FSX do not. NZOP Opotiki in New Zealand made the cut by virtue of having a fuel pump and a Multicomm radio frequency. It's a single grass strip, but does have runway numbering and overruns at both ends so isn't quite as Spartan looking as some. Norwich UK is the update today, EGSH (not sure how they got that out of "Norwich"). It's quite a big airport with a very spread out layout. It diagrammed nicely but I had to struggle to get some of the text in. It has two paved runways and is towered. It kind of has a military layout look to it and may be a former RAF base, but isn't listed that way now. The only approach listed is an ILS, but hey, if you can only have one, I guess that's the kind to have. NOTICE - - - By way of looking to the future, there is a sneak preview of an early alpha version of AirHauler 2 being shown at the Cosford (UK) Flight Sim show on Saturday and there is a good chance that AH2 testing is going to accelerate. If that comes to pass it may be necessary to cut back on my production rate for airport diagrams for a while. It's not clear to me how much reduction will be necessary or if, indeed, any curtailment at all will be needed, but just wanted to let everyone know I may slow down a little if the AH2 testing gets hot and heavy. allardjd 1,853
10/12/13 Airport Diagrams New: ESNJ Jokkmokk - Jokkmokk, Sweden KWRI McGuire AFB - Wrightstown, New Jersey - US KMWC Timmerman - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - US Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,322; downloads 2,502; subscribers 17 If you got a top-down look at ESNJ in Jokkmokk, Sweden, you could easily mistake it for a race track of some kind. The single runway is paralleled at some distance by a taxiway of the same width with no inter-connecting taxiways. At both ends, long, semicircular turns in the taxiways merge back with the runway from the ends. The result is a long, narrow oval that looks for all the world like a race track. Interestingly, there's a long extended threshold on one end of the runway so the overall length of the oval is a lot more than the landing area of the runway itself. The place is lighted but has no fuel pump and only has an FSS radio frequency published and has only an NDB approach. I always have a hard time with the ICAO code for KWRI, McGuire AFB in New Jersey. In my mind, that code should be for Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio and McGuire should have something else. It's an honest enough naming, since McGuire is situated in Wrightstown NJ, accounting for the ID, but it just seems wrong to me. This one is towered and has a good assortment of buildings, unlike many FS military fields. It even has about seven that are custom. The larger runway is a yard short of 10,000' and is 200' wide. There's a long list of published approaches including two ILSs and most of the taxiways have IDs. I used a second plate to label the taxiways. KMWC, Timmerman (or Timmerman Field, as I've always known it) is the "other" airport in Milwaukee, Mitchell field being the big one. It sort of plays Midway to Mitchell's O'Hare. It even looks vaguely like Midway - it has four runways in two parallel pairs. One in each set is a very wide grass runway (275'). It's towered and lighted and has a VOR on the field but the single ILS is really a Localizer-only setup, without even the normal DME. Since the VOR has DME capability that service is still available but is not on the ILS frequency. All the buildings are on a large ramp at the north end and most look very much like T-Hangars. There's nothing that looks like a terminal, so maybe the Midway analogy doesn't really hold water all that well after all. Re the AH2 sneak preview I mentioned in yesterday's update, I had the date of the FS show, and the AH2 preview, a week early. It's NEXT Saturday, the 19th. I am expecting a new alpha version of AH2 in the tester's bin about then, however. It's a single grass strip, 2250' X 130' with a tiny little dirt ramp butted up against one end. Because of that ramp and the two published frequencies (CTAF and MULTICOMM), when it dropped out of one of my lists it was a keeper. A man's got to have standards I guess and those are part of mine. By the way, if you ever pay it a visit be careful, it's at an elevation of over 4,400 feet MSL. Number two on today's list is FKKM, Nkounja, in Foumban, Cameroon. It's got a respectable 6,900' X 148' runway, an FSS frequency and an NDB on the field. There are a couple of relatively small ramps along the length of the runway and about a dozen stock FS buildings. This is one of two airports today that happen to lie more or less at 5 degrees north. This one is at almost 4,000' MSL elevation too. WBMK is Butterworth, in the city of the same name in Malaysia. Butterworth? In Malaysia?? Probably there's no colonial influence in that. It's on a small island just off the coast, by the way and looks like it might be quite scenic, though I don't attempt to check out that aspect of these airports. Anyway, this is the second one at 5 degrees north in today's group. It came from the military fields list though the name doesn't reflect that. Given that, if you expect it to be somewhat sparse you won't be disappointed. There's a MS fuel pump and control tower and little else besides the runway itself - OK, nothing else. No taxiways, ramps, turnarounds, run-up pads, or any such things, though there are displaced thresholds at both ends. Those are the only paved safety zones showing. The runway is about 8,000 X 150 and there is a pretty good list of published COM frequencies. The really odd thing about WBMK is the navaids. There is a DME on the field, which is common but not required in FS for military fields. It's really an artifact of a military TACAN transmitter, whose distance signal is readable by civil DME equipment. There is also a conventional VOR/DME on the field and the two navaid transmitters are separated by, using the runway length as a gauge, maybe 1,500' - lets say something on the order of a quarter mile. So far, so good but here's the really interesting part - both the DME (TACAN) and the VOR/DME have the same frequency, 113.30 MHz, which leads one to wonder what really happens when you tune that frequency? I'll leave it to you guys to figure it out - I didn't try it. I suspect that there's a problem with the data here and one of them is really on a different frequency. I think MS got it wrong, but that's just a guess. allardjd 1,853
10/14/13 Airport Diagrams New: KTTD Portland-Troutdale - Portland, Oregon - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2585-kttd/ ME21 Red Pine - Clayton Lake, Maine - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2586-me21/ KDOV Dover AFB - Dover, Delaware - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2587-kdov/ Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 2,328; downloads 2,503; subscribers 17 KTTD Portland-Troutdale in Portland OR, seems to be on a par with Timmerman in Milwaukee from a few days ago - it's the "other" airport, or maybe one of several others. This one is pretty complex - a single mile-long X 150' runway with full-length parallel taxiways, plenty of turnoffs on both sides and very large ramps on each side, towered and lighted. Alas, there's no ILS, not even a localizer-only version. The single published approach is an NDB C-T-L. This airport came from the sequester list. ME21, Red Pine, in Clayton Lake ME is pretty far down-scale. It's just a 3,200' X 50' paved runway - nothing else. It came at random from a very large list I use. That list contains entries for about 17,500 FS airports in many countries, but most from the US. Many of the airports listed don't satisfy my inclusion criteria, but rather than weed them out ahead of time, I just skip them if one falls out of the selection process that is below my minimums criteria and draw another. I by-passed two before getting this one, which did make it in because the runway is paved - it has nothing else to distinguish it, including any navaids near enough (20 NM) to be listed. Hey, I deserve an easy one sometimes. KDOV is Dover AFB, in Dover DE. It's a good sized Air Force Base and looks it, with the acres and acres of ramp space that characterizes most of the major US bases. It has two crossing runways, and they're a little odd, the shorter one (9,600') being the wider, at 200' while the long runway (12,900') is only 150' wide. I'd have to say that either one is plenty big for most situations. Subtract out the very long displaced threshold on the NW end of the long runway and it's probably shorter than the wide one anyway. It has ILSs at both ends of the shorter, wider runway, 01/19. The field is, of course, towered and lighted and besides the precision approaches, has a couple VORDME non-precision approaches as well. There's the usual DME on the field and a VOR/DME in the middle distance. Unlike many military fields in FS, there are a fair number of buildings and the taxiway network is pretty well labeled, except some spurs that are not. I needed a second plate for the taxiway labels. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There are 80 new waypoints added to the download available in the Mutley's Hangar File Library. The reason is that I posted an Airport Bundle in the Special Events section of the File Library, containing the airports for Section 2 of the Mutley's Hangar ATWC V around the world event. The airport diagrams in the bundle are all available elsewhere in the file library as individual files but the bundle is for the convenience of those participating or closely following the ATWC V event. LIPH is yet another Italian Military airfield - that's at least three in the past couple of weeks. Who knew they were so jingoistic? If I were Albania, I'd be pretty watchful. I assume the "S." is for "San" but I brought in the text exactly as it is in FSX, as always. The field is a towered, lighted affair with an 8,000+' X 150' runway, including an ILS at one end. KGEU is Glendale Mun in Glendale AZ. Towered and lighted, it's single 7,200' X 100' runway is dwarfed by a ramp that must contain enough material to pave Rhode Island with a little left over, making me think this may be a former military field. The Air Force normally does not take the pavement with them when they leave. It has a lot of buildings, most of which appear to be T-Hangars, but also had a couple of custom structures as well. There are two non-precision approaches published, but no ILS. This one is from the sequester list. Whoever did the taxiway labeling is a moron. Besides using an unnecessary hyphen in the taxiway labels, only the cross-taxiways between the long parallel taxiway and the ramp and runway are labeled, and not all of them. The parallel taxiway and the path to the north end of the runway have no IDs and they missed one or two others that seem to be just as important as the ones they did choose to label. That kind of stuff drives me nuts, but my protocol is to give you what's in FSX and that's the way it is. This is a two plate diagram. KCAD is Wexford Co, in Cadillac MI, about 60 miles or so from where I grew up. I have vague memories of being at the airport once with my dad when I was a pup, watching sailplanes, but don't think I've visited that airport since. It's probably different now than it was then. KCAD has one paved and one grass runway. It's not towered but is lighted and does have a full ILS to one end of the main runway, which is about a Harley-Davidson short of 5,000' long and 100' wide. There's an NDB on the field and an LOM out on the approach course to mark the way in, but no VOR within 20 NM. The update today is LFLA, airport name "Branches", in Auxerre, France. Since it's illegal for any French words to be pronounced as they are spelled and usually the spelling is unpronounceable anyway, French words are a great mystery to me. In this case, I suspect "Auxerre" might sound like something a French pirate might be heard to utter loudly - or not. I hate to even consider how "Branches" might sound on the lips of a Frenchman, but it's a reasonable assumption that the ending "es" probably comes off as sounding like an exclamation Arthur Fonzarelli was fond of. As airports go, it's a garden-variety, single runway field, non-towered, with a nice ramp set off the runway by a single taxiway stub. The runway is abut 5,400' X 100' and has a full ILS to one end. It's a paved strip almost 6,000' X 100', lighted but with no tower. There are a couple of published COM frequencies and a couple of non-precision approaches, both C-T-L, even though the nearest navaids are beyond my 20 NM criteria to list. There's no fuel pump but there is a ramp at one end, set off about five runway widths from the runway, with a connecting taxiway. Both ends of the runway have widened areas, most likely for turnaround pads. SEMT is from the military airfields list. FSX calls it Eloy Alfaro Intl, which implies a civilian operation, so I guess it must be a mixed-use airport. It's a good sized field with a 9,300'+ X 148' runway, a good taxiway network and three large ramps. Buildings are a little on the sparse side and all are stock FSX structures. The airport is towered and has a full ILS to one end of the runway. It lies about 1 degree south of the equator and is a seaside airport at a modest elevation, so expect it to be hot, hot, hot. Magvar is 0.0 so that's one less thing to worry about. There's an NDB on the field and a VOR/DME on the approach path. KOXR, Oxnard CA is from the sequester list, so is towered by definition. The runway is about 6,000' long but with a long displaced threshold at one end. The ramp is almost the full length of the runway, including the overrun - a very impressive expanse of pavement. It has a good assortment of buildings and boasts a full ILS to one end, and three non-precision approaches as well. There's a VOR/DME nearby. I've been giving some thought to list management and have decided to make the very large list (17,500 entries) inactive and bring in a more modest fourth list to replace it. This should reduce the number of diagrams for small, barren airports that just barely squeak in under my inclusion criteria. Most of the other lists are more biased toward larger, more full-featured airports. The next list up, which will now become active, is a list of the airports for which an AFCAD was supplied with a large, popular payware traffic program. I won't be diagramming the add-on AFCAD versions - I'll stick with the stock FSX airports, but that list will help me select and include some airpatches that are a little more robust than some of the ones I have been doing. As always, if there's a particular airport that you'd like to have diagrammed, let me know. Requests get head of the line privileges. This group represents the work from both the 17th and the 18th, so six new plus an update. I'm not going to give any kind of detailed commentary on such a large group but want to point out that KMER Castle is the former Castle AFB, closed several years before FSX was published. Also PABR in Barrow Alaska is near the site of the plane crash that killed aviation pioneer Wiley Post and humorist Will Rogers, and is named in their honor. I have inactivated the large list that contains so many low-end airports and added another in it's place. We'll see fewer of the barren pea patch fields at least for a while. M85 is Gideon Memorial, in Gideon MO, no doubt the home of a thriving Bible factory, supplying the hotels and motels. I'm not sure if they actually use the airport to fly them out or not, however. The airport kind of looks like two airports, or a pair of ladders laid next to one another at a slight angle. There are two each of runways with a full length parallel taxiway and four connectors between runway and taxiway. They lie at an angle to one another and the right-hand set is closed, both runway and taxiways. There's a modest ramp and a few buildings at the north end of the active (left-hand) set. The open runway is about 4,500' X 58'. It's non-towered, but lighted. There is no MS fuel pump. There is one published approach of the non-precision variety, with navaids off in the distance but near enough to be useful. SBCO is a Brazilian military base, far to the south in the country, at 29 degrees south. That's about as far south of the equator as we are north here in Florida, which is to say a fair piece of distance. The airport has a single runway a bit over 9,000' long X approximately 175' wide. It is towered and lighted and has a couple of NDB approaches, supported by an NDB on the field. There's a parallel taxiway that extends to the thresholds at both ends but since both are displaced, there's a lot of pavement yet beyond the last place to enter the runway at both ends. The prudent pilot will turn toward the end and have it all before him when he starts his takeoff roll. The third and busiest is KSLE, McNary, in Salem OR. This one is from the sequester list and I used two plates to document it. It's a two-runway, complex airport with several large ramps and an extensive network of taxiways. It's towered and lighted and has a full ILS to one end of one runway and a Localizer-Backcourse approach to the other, plus a few other approaches. The runways are in the 5-6,000' range and, oddly, differ in width by 10', one at 150' wide and the other at 140'. The only navaids within 20 NM are the ILS and an LOM at the Outer Marker. ------------------------- Another set of 61 add-on waypoints have been added to the posting in the MH File Library for anyone who's interested in having them. The upload now contains 992 new waypoints for FSX, world-wide and all representing named, real-world waypoints. http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/2473-added-fsx-waypoints/ John - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you'd like to subscribe (free) and have all new and updated airport diagram files e-mailed to you, contact me at allardjd@earthlink.net with a Subject Line of "Airport Diagram Subscription". - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The update is LFJL, in France. It's sizeable 8,100' X 148' paved strip, towered and with all the usual trimmings, including a full ILS to one end, a Cat. III no less. There must be a story behind that. Someone or something important and with deep pockets must fly in and out of there. 8,100' seems like a fairly short runway for a Cat. III but they must know what they're doing - right? KNFG is Camp Pendleton MCAS, in Oceanside CA. Pendleton is the Marine Corp's West Coast boot camp and training center but I suspect there is more going on there than that. Anyway, they have an airfield to support the training operations or provide opportunities for the generals to qualify for flight pay every month. Like most military fields in FSX, this one is long on pavement but uncharacteristically also is swimming in buildings quite a number of which are the custom types. There was also another gaggle of them just outside the airport "flatten" that I don't include. There are helipads sprinkled around and the taxiways are mostly named, and logically at that. I had to look twice to make sure this really was a military field. The runway is 6,000 X 200, just the thing for Hercs and C-17s, I'd say. There are no published approaches for this one. LKPD is Pardubice, in the Czech Republic, a country for which I haven't done too many diagrams. I think this is the second. I was unfamiliar enough that while working with the graphic, before getting into the text operations and finding out where the place really is, I was scratching my head and thinking, "LK, where is that?" I pretty much had myself convinced it was going to be Kosovo, but nope, the Czech Republic. The place has two parallel runways, one grass. There's a tower and the long runway is about 8,100'. I commented yesterday about an odd airport with two fairly wide runways that were only 10' different in width - here's another, at 246 and 256 feet wide. I'm sure those must translate to something in metric, 3 meters apart from one another. This field does have a full ILS and a couple other approaches but the only navaids within 20 NM are the locators at the Middle and Outer markers. Last on the list is DAAK, in Algeria. Like the Czech Republic, this is a sparsely diagrammed country that I seem to have mostly just danced around. This is the third Algerian airport in the collection. I guess that's one and a half times as many as I've done for the Czech Republic, so they can gloat over someone, at least. DAAK is from the military airfields list and is as Spartan as they get. It's paved but there is no tower and not even any published COM frequencies. Of course there are no published approaches either and no fuel pump. The runway, at least is pretty generous at almost 11,900' X 148', but there are no ramps, overruns or even any wide spots to facilitate turning around. There are some navaids not far away but they are not directly associated with this field. I'm guessing Boufarik is not the place that Algerian pilots are clamoring to get assigned to.
